Nasa's experiment last month to find water on the Moon was a major success, US scientists have announced.

The space agency smashed a rocket and a probe into a large crater at the lunar south pole, hoping to kick up ice.

Scientists who have studied the data now say instruments trained on the impact plume saw copious quantities of water-ice and water vapour.

One researcher described this as the equivalent of "a dozen two-gallon buckets" of water.

"We didn't just find a little bit; we found a significant amount," said Anthony Colaprete, chief scientist for the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) mission.

No doubt

October's experiment involved driving a 2,200kg Centaur rocket stage into the 100km-wide Cabeus Crater, a permanently shadowed depression at the Moon's far south.

At the time, scientists were hoping for a big plume of debris some 10km high which could be seen by Earth telescopes.

The actual debris cloud was much smaller, about 1.6km high, but sufficiently large to betray the evidence researchers were seeking.

The near-infrared spectrometer on the LCROSS probe that followed the rocket into the crater detected water-ice and water vapour. The ultraviolet-visible spectrometer provided additional confirmation by identifying the hydroxyl (OH) molecule, which arises when water is broken apart in sunlight.

"We were able to match the spectra from LCROSS data only when we inserted the spectra for water," Dr Colaprete said.

"No other reasonable combination of other compounds that we tried matched the observations. The possibility of contamination from the Centaur also was ruled out."

Seems like buying a land on the moon would be a wise investment at the present.

That's quite a big step there towards moon colonization.

Way to make us into parasites - now we have no reasons to care for our own environment, we'll just molest another planet dry.

Ok. Now what?

This just came in, they've found water on Mars as well.

Ok. Now what?

LOL

Well now we just become happy and content with the knowledge that there's water on the moon.

Duh - *peace all o'er the earth*

A successful bombing mission !!!!

We declared war on that moon, and it stood no chance. BOOOM !!! It gave up its secrets!

Oh, ok. How much did this cost again?...

Know where else there's large amounts of water.....on Earth.

Could it be time?

10 years late?

I want one!

Bet most of you forgot all about that show?

How nerdy am I?

You can buy a piece of the moon now. Lunar Real Estate - Buy Moon Property - Moon For Sale

Anyone surprised by the news of water hasn't give much time to ponder the makeup of the objects that created all impact craters on the surface. A portion of them could well have been Comets. But them there are those who believe
the moon was created form a portion of the earth being blown into space by an impact of another object then captured by the Earths gravitational pull. The possibilities are many and varied.

If you listen to Coast to Coast Am and Richard C. Hoagland you'd know or maybe believe there is a crystal city just on the edge of a portion of the moon we can see with powerful telescopes.

Always remember UFOs are very real and the only question like it is with the reality of crop circles is in their origins.

:rofl

*starts planning* - buy 5 acres, rent them to an evil overlord who wants to rule the world!!
Total world domination! Muuuahahahaha!

I mean moon domination

I found the entire endeavor wasteful considering India already confirmed there was water on the moon beforehand; NASA just wanted to claim the credit as usual.

Full scale colonies will not be possible for a long time, and the first ones we see there will likely be military or scientific based, but with peaceful intentions (according to international treaty). I wouldn't be surprised though if secret operations begin there much sooner. At least we know we won't have to ship water there when the time comes.

First on the docket: conquer the middle east ... then settle the moon.

heh no kidding.

Actually I think humanity as a whole will have to deal with its collective problems and socially evolve beyond its current constraints before any meaningful space exploration can happen. We need everyone on board with their special skills, assets, and willpower in order to get to the stars. That's just not going to happen anytime soon.

So true!
Our "need" for space exploration is waning. This year Nasa's budget was hacked and I feel it will continue to be so in the future as the economy suffers and more people consider multi-million dollar crash smash missions to be absolutely pointless.

Try multi-billion dollar. I don't think they're useless. We should be exploring space as efficiently as possible, but given material priorities on earth it might not be as practical to do it right now. In times of prosperity we can invest more in research but in times of hardship we need to look to the basics. At least that's my philosophy.

Our economy on earth has been about ignoring the fact that we don't have our own income to cover the basics, so we borrow from institutions; then we pretend we are prosperous, but the whole system is based on printed money. It's silly really. Space exploration will have more meaning once we secure our long-term peace and stability on earth.

Personally, I think a period of retrenchment, where we spend most of our space exploration money on improving methods of getting into orbit and beyond more efficiently and less expensively would be a good thing.

I think space exploration is necessary, and I think the exploitation of space resources will be huge by the end of the century. The nations that draw back from space will become backwaters and has-been's by 2150.

But... we need a cheaper way into orbit than chemical rockets.

Wonderful, just wonderful.

Obama will bomb the moon, but he doesn't want to bomb the Iraqis who attacked us on 9/11.

Are you being serious? You actually think Iraqis attacked America on 9/11?
