Health care vote: A majority of House members have voted to pass the health care bill Naples Daily News

"A majority of House members have voted to pass the health care bill. The vote is continuing.

Democratic leaders were hopeful they could pass the bill late Saturday, giving Obama his biggest victory since last November's historic election. Obama made a rare visit to Congress earlier in the day to meet with House Democrats in an effort to cement a majority to pass the legislation that is his top domestic priority."

House approves landmark healthcare reform bill

D.C. Now | Healthcare | Los Angeles Times

November 7, 2009 | 8:15 pm
After a day of testy, sometimes repetitive debate, the House tonight passed a landmark healthcare bill that would create a new role for the federal government in supplying insurance for almost all Americans.

Cheers broke out when the vote went over the magic number of 218 needed to pass the legislation. The final vote was 220-215.

In passing the bill, the Democratic-controlled House handed President Obama a major victory on the issue that has become the centerpiece of his domestic agenda. The Senate is considering its version of healthcare reform, and the two plans will have to be reconciled before a final bill goes to the president’s desk.

There is still hope in getting the Senate to honor their oaths and stop this.

This is a huge deal no matter your political ideology.

Re: House approves landmark healthcare reform bill

Now the Democrats need to try and remove those Dems who voted no by withdrawing funds for them from party coffers and running more progressive people against them.

Re: House approves landmark healthcare reform bill

Honoring their oaths to refuse health care for those who can't get it? Some oath. Only Repubs believe in that....and a few traitorous dems.

Welcome to the forum.

Slightly liberal, eh?;)

Re: House approves landmark healthcare reform bill

This is a BLACK DAY for a America and puts us one step closer to being the Neo-Socialist Nation Obama dreams of. It will mean the end of freedoms starting with speech and foums like this one where an open and free exchange can take place. If you just pay attention to Obama's henchmen you can hear them spout their radical message of hate toward everything this Nation has always stood for until Obama came along.

Re: House approves landmark healthcare reform bill

passage!

with 219 dems and joseph cao

on behalf of EXCITED republicans everywhere---CONGRATS!!!

LOLOLOL!

worst of both worlds

responsible ON RECORD for half a T cuts to M&M, mandates on individuals to buy for themselves unbelievably expensive medical insurance, fines on those who don't, threats to send em to jail, mandates on bankrupt states to pick up huge increases in medicaid costs simply at the stroke of a pen, ten years of tax revenues against only 6 years of benefits, and much much more...

with NO chance of passage upstairs

LOLOL!

unbelievably dumb

republicans just picked up 25 house seats in southern and other bluedog districts

the backlash against the party nationally is gonna make anything you've seen so far mere teapot tempest

and it has no chance of moving past lieberman and his half dozen stalwarts

if you can only get 220 in the house, you are completely hopeless on the expensive blue carpet---politics 101

witness cap and trade, which had a similarly pathetic margin

just wait til the sunday talks get hold of this

stephanopoulos---well, nancy cleared quite a hurdle yesterday, but that's a rather slim margin, isn't it

george will---it cuts M&M, it fines individuals, its accounting is bogus

the house still has to pass a quarter T doc fix, off budget

etc, etc, etc

a HUGE win today for the opponents of obama

pelosi is stupid beyond compare

but, for tonite---CONGRATS!!!

sincerely

sleep well

Re: House approves landmark healthcare reform bill

Goodness, 220-215. A squeaker of that level is rare. That means that only an once less of support in the Senate will kill the bill. At least I can hope.

Re: House approves landmark healthcare reform bill

Well we're ****ed, unless some of the Blue Dog Senators stick to their guns.

i'm surprised at your lack of patience

by the end of tomorrow you'll see how much trouble they've got themselves in

this thing has NO CHANCE upstairs

as you know

lieberman was mcchrystal clear, he's not alone, and he means business

politics requires patience, friend

for now, let them enjoy their happy talk, laugh inwardly

see moves ahead, even if nancy can't

the disposition of the senate is manifest, has been for a month

it's not gonna change cuzza a one vote victory down in strongarm land

Re: House approves landmark healthcare reform bill

The very fact it was that close will keep the Senate from getting to 60

I hate to break it to yah, but, it's dead in the water. We have 2 congressional houses with 2 different versions of the same bill. You know what that means? the senate will never pass it and even if they do, once the differences are worked out, they will have to pass it all over again. which will never happen.

Re: House approves landmark healthcare reform bill

I just heard that the only Republican to vote for the bill was none other than Joseph Cao. Interesting....

Of course, liberals are now treating him like a hero. Kinda like how they treated Joe Liberman as a hero. Ha.

Alright Prof, Ill play along, pardon my cynicism for Washington to do anything right. When is the Senate expected to vote on it?

Re: House approves landmark healthcare reform bill

the senate had no chance to get to 60 from the start

reid can't lose ONE

and lieberman is one tuff sonofabitch

also ben nelson, evan bayh, kent conrad, lincoln, landrieu, pryor, dorgan...

if nancy had got 230 or so, then maybe some teeny change might be imaginable

but she leveraged to the max and all know it

had to hold guns to heads to get her paper thin margin on paper

it did not OFFICIALLY die tonite, tis true

which, congrats to the other side, i guess

but then, flip side, they are signed on the dotted line under m&m cuts, the criminalization of the uninsured (bye bye, youth vote), supremely cycnical accounting, taxes on small biz, and much more

how do you think they manage to spend 1.2 to 1.4T and still come out ahead of the deficit?

taxes, fines, penalties, mandates---in trillions

and this thing just goes on and on, every word wounding their side

they're gonna PAY politically, bigtime

the house bill is exactly the wrong shape for the senate, in addition, pelosi has been steering the wrong direction from the start

you'll see by tomorrow nite, this is a HUGE problem for the party of obama

hang in

I personally think the senate unfairly represents different amounts of people and as such should be seriously reformed or just given the ole boot altogether...but that's just this guy.

So the list of to be unemployed democrats has been finalized for 2010? Aces.

i embrace your cynicism

reid has said it might go into next year

he can't get started til cbo answers a bunch of questions

and then they're always on vacation

that left em starting just before thanksgiving or so

and then weeks of debating on the floor

the last time it went on for months

tell you the truth, i stopped following and covering health care after lieberman declared his filibuster

i know jilting joe, and i know he means it

they have NO chance, tonite is just politics

and it's a nice (tho very mixed, because of the paltry margin) headline

but down the months, they're gonna be catching hell to the max over all the crap that's in it

even libs on this page don't support half a T cuts to m and m

i have NEVER seen a dp lib defend that

it ENDS medicare advantage---one quarter of our seniors

you can't piss off seniors in this country and survive politically

the fines on individuals, their criminalization

even extreme libs don't go that far

the senate takes forever, to answer your question

you heard one of em say their new deadline is next year's state of the union

then ron wyden (robust PO, oregon) pointed out that puts em in an election year, so no way

reid then came back (as he always does, back and forth, back and forth) and said, no, we can do it quicker

when is not really the issue

lieberman is, and his more than half dozen friends

and a 220 (including joseph cao---LOL!) is not gonna sway em

you'll see

As is was it's purpose.

Re: House approves landmark healthcare reform bill

As is was it's purpose.

Oh, I'm aware what the purpose was. It doesn't mean I agree with it. It was a consolation made long ago that just wasn't that well thought up. I don't mind have two branches of legislation, I just would prefer that the system worked better than it did. It's not very democratic for a person in , say, Wyoming to have 50 times the representation of the national average. I have lived in low population states, but the system that exists in the senate right now does very poorly at portraying the will of the average citizen.

The Republicans can always see what they can do to stall everything, and block the bill until.......... After next year's elections?

if they think mr cao is gonna portend any kinda red agreement upstairs, well...

LOLOLOL!

mr cao, bless his heart, is a devout catholic vietnamese from louisiana

the point---the catholic bishops at 2am last nite brokered the deal between pelosi and stupak which allowed the stupak amendment to get to the floor

just the day before, nancy slammed the door on liberal, robust PO proponent anthony wiener, new york, msnbc's favorite dem

no amendment for wiener

but stupak, anti abortionist...

quite clearly, if nancy had said no to stupak, her bill was dead

no other reason for her 2am surrender

so stupak got to the floor, the bishops bounced with joy when it passed (with 100% republican support)

hence, cao

there aren't any vietnamese catholics in reid's roundhouse

To be fair to you, it was ****ed up by the 17th(???) amendment.
