And deaths there are skyrocketing. This strain of the flu is essentially viral pneumonia. If you think the swine flu pandemic is bad, it is child's play compared to this bug. We had better pray that this one does not spread. If it does, we will be looking at 1918 all over again, or possibly even worse.

Western Ukraine was hit by a severe epidemic of unidentified influenza, tentatively diagnosed by doctors as viral pneumonia. The number of dead has climbed dramatically. Doctors advise Western Ukrainians to stay at home and use preventive medication. The first pedestrians wearing face masks have been seen on Lviv streets

Sounds like a crisis... can't waste a crisis.

THAT being said, (had to keep CC happy with some hyper-partisanship) I'll wait until this pans out a little more bfore getting too worried. Not because I don't understand the dangers, trust me, I do. But Western Ukraine isn't really home to a well funded, well equipped medical infrastructure, and this could be a false alarm.

To be fair it's Chornobyl (Ukrainian pronouciation) and most importantly when Chornobyl occured Ukraine was a captive nation within the prison system known as the Soviet Union. The USSR was controlled by Russians from Moscow and since Chornobyl was in Ukraine the Russians could care less that millions of Ukrainians were in danger from a poorly designed and controlled reactor. Furthermore Russian soil and population was barely impacted by the radiation erruption since Ukraine and Belarus were impacted.

My mother's home village is only 100 kilometers downwind from Chornobyl and even today virtually no one under 50 lives there anymore. Most were smart enough tp escape to parts of Ukraine, Lithuania, and some very very stupid ones moved to Russia.

Both Ukrainians and Belorussians are one ethnos -- Russian, that was divided by uncle Joe onto three "ethnoses". Besides, there ever were two "Russians" that ruled the USSR. O, and the final descision to build that station in Chernobyl was taken by UKRAINIAN parliament. Check your facts before posting bull.

First of all check you own facts since th eproper name of the city is Chornobyl in Ukrainian. As far as the Ukrainian sSR' 'S "parliament" "authorizing anything is a noot point since the Ukrainian SSR was a prisoner nation of the USSR and the warden s of that prison sat in Moscow and all decisions were made in Moscow by Moscow for Moscow's interests not Ukrainian or Belorus's interest.

I know my history and it was not tainted by the Soviets and not infested by Russian propoganda or Russianized versions or Russian e.g. = poor excuses for historians.

The facts mame and only the fact as Joe Friday would say !! are that the UKRAINIAN SSR parliament as all of the other 14 SSR parliaments of the prison of nation in Moscow told tem to stamp !! If they did not do what Moscow said Moscow would stamp them on the head !!!

Mine found potaoes here also !!!! Idaho potatoes the only variety my dad would buy. In 50 ilb bags at the farmers market and that was when only us immigrants shopped at the farmers market !!


Well some of mine were sent to Siberia by the Russian invaders. The two people who were to become my parents were sent to the camps by the NAZI'S !! My parents came here aftaer WW II and my dad was able to earn more in one week to buy more potaoes than his entire freaking village could have earned in a year !!!

Hey what did your people call potaoes?? My Mother's people sai BULBA my FATHER'S called potatoes KARTOFLYA !!! But my DAD grew up in the part of Ukraine occupied by Poland.
