Prisoners to get precious swine flu shots before you

I just wish they'd go ahead and give the vaccine to service members, too.
Everybody at my son's base was supposed to be vaccinated before the end of October.
Now, thanks to shortages, they're shooting for sometime in December.
These young men are living in much the same crowded conditions that make prisoners especially vulnerable.
If prisoners need priority vaccination, then so does the army, one would think.

Nobody has "earned" anything by virtue of managing to not be in prison. The PEOPLE ARE the one paying for the swine flu vaccine, it is responsible for protecting public health, and it will have to deal with any eventual outbreaks. If the government concludes that it's most effective to provide the vaccines to pregnant people and children, it can do so. If it decides to include elderly or nursing home patients, it can do so. if it decides to include doctors, teachers, bank tellers, or prisoners, it can do so.
Okay, go ahead.

Someone believes in Government saves us all don't they... oh yes they do, it's YOU!

Anyway, the discussion is on a vaccine that's SCARCE being provided to prison inmates over the rest of society.

Not the greatness that is government saving us. You can start that thread if you wish.

Mr. V:

Let me add a few notes to the discussion here.

1) If there is a swine flu outbreak in a prison, it will cost a hell of a lot more to treat all the patients than if vaccinations had been given instead. Since you care about wasteful spending, I thought you might be open to an idea that would end up taking less money out of your pocket.

2) And, if the swine flu strikes a prison, guess who else comes down with it? The families of the prisoners, who spread it around outside the prison, after visiting day. Treating the prisoners eliminates an avenue where the illness can spread, thus fewer people come down with it. And face it - If fewer people are getting swine flu, because one of it's conduits for spreading has been closed, then fewer resources end up being used, less tax money is ultimately spent, and lives are even saved.

3) I know you don't like the idea of prisoners being vaccinated, but look at the big picture. It isn't just about the prisoners. It is about a very major health risk to the entire community, and we must do what we must do to alleviate the problem, even if some of the steps involved do not appeal to everybody. To do otherwise would be just plain malfeasance. I don't know about you, but if personnel in MY community acted this incompetently, and allowed something like the swine flu to spread, due to their opposition to who was recommended to receive the vaccine, and if people died, especially children, because of their malfeasance, I would be calling for them to be fired.

It might be a controversial step to take, but it was the right one, due to the reasons I laid out above.
