1. October is already the bloodiest month in the 8-year history of the US war in Afghanistan.

2. For the third month in the last four, US casualites have climbed to record numbers.

3. The distressing deaths of 8 Americans on Tuesday, following the tragic termination of 14 in a pair of helicopter crashes on Monday, raised the rate of requiem in the region to 55, so far, with Halloween still a few days hence.

4. Forty fighters fell in September, after 51 heroes were lost in August of this year.

5. Eight Americans were martyred on October 3, when the enemy made a coordinated, 12 hour assault on our isolated outpost in Nuristan.

6. A couple days later, we pulled out of that mountaintop on the moon.

7. When the whirlybirds went down, the Pentagon promptly proposed they were flying mishaps, though their mission overflapping poppy fields implies otherwise.

8. The president, meanwhile, has decided that he will soon decide, or not.

9. That's sometime between the runoff between corrupt dictator Karzai and offended contender Abdullah Abudllah on November 7 and Obama's November 11 scheduled visit to Asia.

10. It might or might not be coincidental that the decision-to-decide-date comes AFTER the gubernatorials of Virginia and New Jersey next Tuesday, November 3.

11. On March 27, Obama announced his "new, comprehensive strategy" for Afghanistan which looked almost exactly like the blueprint pushed so publicly by General McChrystal.

12. Indeed, by all accounts, the March 27 master plan was molded upon comprehensive information transmitted to the incoming administration by the former team managed by Mr. Meanie, Darth Cheney.

13. Indeed, on August 17, Obama called Afghanistan a "war of necessity," and "not a war of choice."

14. Victory, continued our confidence-challenged Commander in Chief, is "fundamental to the defense of our people."

15. This was THREE DAYS, mind you, before the election in question which returned the dictator subsequently discovered to be corrupt.

16. A week and a half hence, on August 30, McChrystal secreted an inclusive assessment to the White House setting forth all affairs in Afghanistan and suggesting a surge-like strategy for the troubled region.

17. As Senator, you'll recall, Obama energetically opposed the Surge in Iraq which turned the tide there our way.

18. That is, had Obama had his druthers at the time, America would have suffered an extreme set back, loss and dreadful defeat.

19. Three weeks after sitting on McChrystal's assessment, Obama surged FIVE Sunday talks and dissembled: he had not yet received a report, the president prevaricated, and he had not received any request for reinforcements.

20. The NEXT DAY, Watergate wonderboy Bob Woodward leaked in The Post the goods from the general, exposing Obama to extreme embarrassment, and more.

21. Since then, the White House and its Pentagon have engaged in a PUBLIC dispute most unseemly.

22. Obama's Defense Secretary, Robert Gates, sided with his folks in the field.

23. Just this Tuesday it was revealed that the senior Pentagon official in Zabul, Matthew Hoh, stepped down from his position last September 10 out of principle.

24. "I have lost understanding of and confidence in the strategic purposes of the United States presence in Afghanistan", related the retiree in a four page correspondence to his superiors.

25. "I have doubts and reservations about our current strategy and planned future strategy, but my resignation is based not upon how we are pursuing this war, but why and to what end," continued the highly qualified consultant.

26. "We took his letter very seriously," recounted Richard Holbrooke, Obama's ultra-experienced overseer of the illicit election, "because he was a good officer."

27. "We all thought that given how serious his letter was, how much commitment there was, and his prior track record, we should pay close attention to it," held Holbrooke.

28. As should we all.

29. Indeed, Hoh was offered a promotion to senior embassy staff in Kabul after a face-to-face with Holbrooke, but the dutiful dissenter demurred.

30. Indications are Obama, keeping with his compromising character, will choose some middle course when his dithering days are done.

31. Word is he'll dispatch half the troops McChrystal calls for, while trying to hold "big cities and infrastructure," leaving the countryside to our cowardly attackers.

32. The only reason we're over there, in the first place, is because of the centrality ceded this "right war" in the candidate's campaign, Obama's need to convince the electorate that, though he incisively inveighed against our involvement in Iraq, he was not your traditional anti-military, blame-America-first democrat.

33. Now he's stuck with it, Afghanistan is Obama's War.

34. Anything less than giving the general all he begs for will be perceived by non-partisans as the president playing politics with the safe keeping of our troops.

35. Barack's base, meanwhile, is badly umbraged.

36. Integrity will impel McChrystal to imitate Hoh's principled example.

37. And others will likely follow along.

38. Afghanistan is killing this president.

Roadside bombs – the biggest killer of U.S. soldiers – claimed eight more American lives Tuesday, driving the U.S. death toll to a record level for the third time in four months as President Barack Obama nears a decision on a new strategy for the troubled war.

Seriously, WTF happened? He was supposed to already be on top of this, what's he stalling for?

Fact is...these troops are being killed by Bush and Cheney's defeated Taliban.

"That's why I said to the Taliban in Afghanistan: Get rid of al Qaeda; see, you're harboring al Qaeda. Remember this is a place where they trained -- al Qaeda trained thousands of people in Afghanistan. And the Taliban, I guess, just didn't believe me. And as a result of the United States military, Taliban no longer is in existence. And the people of Afghanistan are now free. (Applause.)"

Aren't we lucky George and Dick were so honest and diligent about actually accomplishing a mission?

When do you hold the current administration responsible for its decisions and indecision?

1. October is already the bloodiest month in the 8-year history of the US war in Afghanistan.

We've increased optempo and kinetic missions and are out of the FOBs and with the people. This was bound to happen, much like it did in Iraq when Petreaus took over and changed strategy. The helo crashes didn't help anything.

2. For the third month in the last four, US casualites have climbed to record numbers.

See above.

3. The distressing deaths of 8 Americans on Tuesday, following the tragic termination of 14 in a pair of helicopter crashes on Monday, raised the rate of requiem in the region to 55, so far, with Halloween still a few days hence.

Sad.

4. Forty fighters fell in September, after 51 heroes were lost in August of this year.

See above.

5. Eight Americans were martyred on October 3, when the enemy made a coordinated, 12 hour assault on our isolated outpost in Nuristan.

Tactical risk is sometimes just that.

6. A couple days later, we pulled out of that mountaintop on the moon.

The General's decision. Read this week's edition of the Army Times.

7. When the whirlybirds went down, the Pentagon promptly proposed they were flying mishaps, though their mission overflapping poppy fields implies otherwise.

And DEA agents on board...but I'm offended that you'd imply the military would lie about the nature of Soldier casualties.

8. The president, meanwhile, has decided that he will soon decide, or not.

See my post yesterday from Andrew Exum.

9. That's sometime between the runoff between corrupt dictator Karzai and offended contender Abdullah Abudllah on November 7 and Obama's November 11 scheduled visit to Asia.

I think it will be once the results come in.

10. It might or might not be coincidental that the decision-to-decide-date comes AFTER the gubernatorials of Virginia and New Jersey next Tuesday, November 3.

I'm not sure AFG has anything to do with that.

11. On March 27, Obama announced his "new, comprehensive strategy" for Afghanistan which looked almost exactly like the blueprint pushed so publicly by General McChrystal.

Except for the massive troop increases, yes.

12. Indeed, by all accounts, the March 27 master plan was molded upon comprehensive information transmitted to the incoming administration by the former team managed by Mr. Meanie, Darth Cheney.

That's what they say.

13. Indeed, on August 17, Obama called Afghanistan a "war of necessity," and "not a war of choice."

He did. So he better put his money where his mouth is.

15. This was THREE DAYS, mind you, before the election in question which returned the dictator subsequently discovered to be corrupt.

Any Afghan that is elected will be corrupt. It's their culture.

Hoh was not a Pentagon official, nor an FSO. He is a defense contractor with the State Dept.

You are not entirely incorrect.

you failed to echo my points 16 thru 22

it's ok, i already made em

already made em

already made em

you failed to echo my points 16 thru 22

It's because they are facts that I don't dispute. I'm not a partisan puke that's here to scream vitriol like a lot of folks on DP. You made some valid points and stated some poignant facts of which I agree. Some I disagreed with. If you don't want to refute them, that's fine...but I may start calling you "Navy Pride".

Obama has sent more troops to Afghanistan since Bush in 2001/2002. He has sent in 34, 000 this year. I don't hear anybody blaming him for the rising death toll due to this, yet more troop=more deaths. Now the anti Obama crowd wants more troops in Afgh and you can bet when death tolls go up even higher, which is inevitable, then they'll be blaming him for either: 1. escalating, or, 2. dithering.

It's not that simple. There are several more factors for increased casualties. Yes, more troops, but also a change in strategy. The companies and battalions are now living in "indian country" amongst the people, which means MORE kinetic activity, which of course results in more casualties.

Additionally, the Taliban has now started employing more IEDs, taking a page from the book of the Iraqi insurgents.

There once was this POTUS Barack,
Bush's plan in Iraq he did mock,
"Killin' Talliban is fair",
He said with a flair,
Now his Afghan plan - Oh, what a crock!

But make no mistake about it, his plan will mirror the Bush Doctrine. As he's doing and has been doing abroad since he strolled into office. He will continue to launch drone attacks against targets in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He will continue to build prisons and detain those that threaten either our forces or allied forces or civilians. He will follow the sofa agreement in Iraq almost to the tee. He will continue to implement the Patriot Act, his Gitmo plan is...uh...where?

For the record....I have defended Gitmo since it's inception as I believe it an utter stroke of genius by the Bush Administration. On our shores but...not really on our shores. On a Naval Base...that's really not our naval base. It prevents both rescue or escape. It is not US territory...but it is US territory and a good argument why these men do not deserve our justice system or even the right to challenge their detentions. It allows for trials or tribunals. It isolates it from our citizenry, it is run by the military...it allows for sentences to be handed down...and then carried out.

You'll find the answer to all the Gtimo questions that Obama wants to ask...wants to spend tens of millions of $ to "close"....you'll find Gitmo answers EVERY one of the questions regarding where, when, how, why, or what, it's simply an absolute stroke of genius.

And it allowed innocents (2/3 of them) to be holed up, tortured, and denied any access to plead their cases. Yes it was another evil stroke of genius by the W people.

I've got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that I agree with you about Bush and Cheney. Now for the bad news. Bush and Cheney are no longer in office. What does the future hold in store? Obama is responsible for the deaths of almost three hundred of our sons and daughters, and he is going to be destroyed the same way Bush was.

My friend you are right about Bush, but that's simply irrelevant to me. If you support Obama on Afghanistan you had better get used to playing defense. Obama is going to get the Bush Treatment.

I can't help but chuckle over this. Here is why:

1) During Bush's term in office, every time Liberals posted about troops deaths, and Bush being responsible for them, they were called troop haters, terrorist supporters, and anti American.

2) So, what do we have today? The very people who called Bush's opponents troop haters, terrorist supporters, and anti American are doing what the Liberals were doing, that is, calling out the president over troop deaths.

So, I must ask the following:

Are those bashing Obama over troop deaths troop haters, terrorist supporters, or anti American? Of course not. Neither were those who were bashing Bush over troop deaths during his administration. It all boils down to nothing more than the usual partisan hackery when it comes to this issue.

So far, I am glad to see that the Obama bashers are not being told that they enjoy seeing our troops die.

So on 01/20/09 Bush and Cheney's responsibilty for their past polices ceased?

So on 01/20/09 Bush and Cheney's responsibilty for their past polices ceased?

You're raising a separate issue. As far as Bush and Cheney are concerned give them their day in court. As far as Obama is concerned, render him ineffective and then give him his day in court. The prosecution of Bush, Cheney and their minions will provide a useful precedent for the prosecution of Obama and his minions. Prosecution for what? War crimes. Drones over sleeping Pakistani villages bringing death from above to innocent villagers. I heard the UN intends to investigate.

Why hasn't Obama ended the Patriot Act? Why hasn't Obama ended warrantless wiretaps? Why is Obama continuing renditions?

I've moved past left and right. I no longer support the existing political order because the Republicans and Democrats have been completely and utterly co-opted by special interests. The Republicans are beholden to Haliburton, and the oil and gas industry, while the Democrats are slaves to General Electric, Duke Energy, and Big Labor. Our political system is incapable of reform. I "won't be fooled again." I apologize for the rant.

As far as Bush and Cheney are concerned give them their day in court.

They had their day in the court of public opinion and lost, we've now got a circus clown in the White House.

As far as Obama is concerned, render him ineffective and then give him his day in court.

Workin on it!

The prosecution of Bush, Cheney and their minions will provide a useful precedent for the prosecution of Obama and his minions. Prosecution for what? War crimes. Drones over sleeping Pakistani villages bringing death from above to innocent villagers. I heard the UN intends to investigate.

Wouldn't it be better if we considered the "useful precedents" of the past...you know history...so as we can dispense with this ridiculous notion that either of these Presidents should be prosecuted?

Additionally, Pakistani villiages hide more than the sleeping Pakistanis, death came in through the front door, forget drones. Death and despair is what this Islamic mentality has wrought you for decades, the Grim Reaper lives amongst you, forget the useful tools we target him with.

Why hasn't Obama ended the Patriot Act?

It's working and it's legal.

Why hasn't Obama ended warrantless wiretaps?

Maybe he's at war. We've intercepted wire, phone, mail, we've intercepted every form of info transmission that's ever been invented during war all throughout our history, why should Obama be the first to end?

Why is Obama continuing renditions?

It's working.
