Swine Flu Cases Overestimated? - CBS News

In late July, the CDC abruptly advised states to stop testing for H1N1 flu, and stopped counting individual cases. The rationale given for the CDC guidance to forego testing and tracking individual cases was: why waste resources testing for H1N1 flu when the government has already confirmed there's an epidemic

What steady and effective leadership, who does this?

It was absolutely ****ing horrible, and i'm still here.

What steady and effective leadership, who does this?

I don't have it - none of my family has it - and none of us plan to get the stupid swine flu shot either. People I know that had it said it was nothing more than a bad cold.

But the rest of you can live in fear and do what the government scares you into doing.

My girlfriends kiddo had a 102 fever. Damn right he got tested!

I live in Riverside County California near Palm Springs and a form of flu was brought home by my 8 year old Granddaughter then quickly moved on to one of two boys, my son, then me and my daughter in law. No once saw a doctor it was mild and lasted an average of two days.
Was it H1N1 who knows. I have heard anecdotal reports that doctors were told to report every case they see as H1N1 and not to bother testing for it.

The declaration of an emergency was unnecessary and troubling because of the "The Model State Emergency Health Powers Act: An Assault on Civil Liberties in the Name of Homeland Security" and the fact that only 1.000 have died and normally between 20,000 and 37,000 people die every year from and during regular flu season.

The Model State Emergency Health Powers Act: An Assault on Civil Liberties in the Name of Homeland Security

This is law in 38 States today. It's Constitutionality has yet to be tested.
I suggest you read up on it and it's ramifications. Here's a portion you should know.

A THREAT TO FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS
Under the Model State Emergency Health Powers Act, upon the declaration of a "public health emergency," governors and public health officials would be empowered to:

1.Force individuals suspected of harboring an "infectious disease" to undergo medical examinations.
2.Track and share an individual's personal health information, including genetic information.
3.Force persons to be vaccinated, treated, or quarantined for infectious diseases.
4.Mandate that all health care providers report all cases of persons who harbor any illness or health condition that may be caused by an epidemic or an infectious agent and might pose a "substantial risk" to a "significant number of people or cause a long-term disability." (Note: Neither "substantial risk" nor "significant number" are defined in the draft.)
5.Force pharmacists to report any unusual or any increased prescription rates that may be caused by epidemic diseases.
6.Preempt existing state laws, rules and regulations, including those relating to privacy, medical licensure, and--this is key--property rights.
7.Control public and private property during a public health emergency, including pharmaceutical manufacturing plants, nursing homes, other health care facilities, and communications devices.
8.Mobilize all or any part of the "organized militia into service to the state to help enforce the state's orders."
9.Ration firearms, explosives, food, fuel and alcoholic beverages, among other commodities.
10.Impose fines and penalties to enforce their orders.
We have to ask ourselves what are they up to with all this hype and the fear tactics?

What's the point in testing for it? If you have the flu right now, it's almost certainly swine flu. There's no need to waste resources testing every single person.

Please back what you're saying here, you're claiming if you have the flu......it's the swine flu? Where do you get these stats?

why waste resources testing?

Indeed. Why waste resources. Why would you want to track this disease....test students as they're in school with like....thousands of other students. I mean if it's deadly....and Obama has called a national emergency....even though the common flu kills 40,000 Americans a year, indeed, why test?

And why not use this philosophy on other diseases as well. Aids, skin cancers, why test for any of this, why would we want to know demographics, where the disease is most easily spread.

Liblady, I can't see you position here, are you saying by testing, finding out demographics, looking for tell tale signs...is a wasted resource.

Please tell me why we'd be declaring a national emergency for a virus we don't even test for?

I thought the same thing!!

Until, one week, all 6 of us came down horribly sick and I drug all of us to the Dr several times and, tada!!! H1N1 Figures - and I was adamate, before we were sick, that us, out in this tiny little town, were never going ot get the stupid thing.
I accused people of people driven by fear and paranoia - and then I found myself dosing the kids with countless bottles of antibiotics to battle infections that they had developed.

It took me a month to recover and feel "well" and the kids missed over a week of school - it sucked.

I wish not to go through that again.

I'm actually quite thankful that all we had were mild infections and nothing more severe.

I don't think H1N1 is all that deadly, not unless your health is already compromised with some other issue, like asthma or something. Regular healthy folks are just fine and should have nothing to worry about from it.

That's it in a nutshell. The regular flu will also kill anyone that has serious health problems, and it does, 36,000 deaths a year approximately in the U.S.

Swine flu deaths have that kind of number? No

Not all swine flu = normal flu.
All normal flu = swine flu.

Not all swine flu = normal flu.
All normal flu = swine flu.

Normal flu= normal flu and 40,000 deaths in the US a year.
Swine flu = National emergency called by Obama in the height of health care debate.

BTW, I think those are Tool Lyrics, I've got a child rock star, fairly sizzling guitar player, he and 'band' play a lot of Tool, I actually took them to the concert a few years ago and I enjoyed it, the drummer is freak good, and the bass player....I've rarely heard better, they are strong.

Current song being learned in the living room......called "The Pot". Heard it?

I've been exposed to the flu every single year. I can't remember the last time I caught it. Never caught the bird flu, haven't caught the swine flu yet, or the monkey flue or the rabbit flu or the dragon flu. Something tells me that even if the swine flu were a legitimate medical emergency, I'd be perfectly fine and laughing while the rest of you bastards were dropping like flies.

The rat has survived the plague, flu, and Obama administration, you are correct.

Haha - H1N1 is somewhat like the chickenpox in the way that most people get it once and, if their bought with the illness was severe enough, they have an immunity to it.

My husband didn't get it this year - he contracted it in the 70's when it went around. Nor did my 2nd son eventhough the brother that he rooms with contracted it first.

Some people just have chisseled immune systems against this thing.

Haven't been sick in many, many years and almost feel the same as you. But don't want to jinx anything by saying it.
