U.S. troops hope Afghanistan sacrifices not in vain

i served with Reuters, BBC, London, Independent Press out of France and UPI.

i did film and photo journalism. you may have seen some of my work. now what unit is it that you were with. maybe you saw me. i was the skinny dyke with the cameras.

once one knows the truth how do they continue. the Nazi's did the same damn thing and we all know what a mess that was.

Ok, so you can't speak for those troops, because you never served in Iraq, in the military. Thanks for clearing that up.

I view journalists the same way that Sherman did:

"I hate newspapermen. They come into camp and pick up their camp rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are. If I killed them all there would be news from Hell before breakfast.”

With a few exceptions, that's the same level of journalism that exists today.

this view is so the lies of war would never be heard. what is done in the dark rooms should stay there with the bodies. is that what you are saying.

you don't like people who tell the truth about what you guys do on purpose and by accident.

the chlldren's playground hit by a stray missile was just one of those things the military does not like tossed in their faces. the colapsed wing on the hospital another. the bombs that missed the target and hit civilian homes where there were families at home.

you don't like those kind of stories. maybe you did not have to take the pictures of the remains in the streets. maybe you just drove by patting yourself on the back for the great kill.

no the military does not like the reporter. they spit on them. they kick dirt on them. they cower when the journalists tell the truth about what really goes on in the glorious military.

why do i have such a low opinion of the military because i saw just what hell you bring in the name of glory.

death and destruction is the trademark. all the time patting your back and waving your little flags while 100's of thousands perish.

go ahead hate me. i know the truth and you don't scare me in the least. like wild dogs you run in packs as the animals that you become once signed on.

the journalist is the truth. the military is the lie.

Excellent post Katie, if not for the free press we would not have a free Democracy. If we did not have a free Democracy, what would we use as our reason for occupying other countries that never attacked us?

the truth is that the military would hide all such action from the people. they would cover up all sorts of wrongs. they can't do that as easily with us hanging around. we are the force that keeps them as honest as we can.

the journalists do this without guns. it is done from cars and vans and we are as close to the shelling as the military is. i have had bullets fly my way. i have been burned by explosions. i have seen journalists hit by fire from both sides. the journalists break their backs to try and tell these stories.

it is also the journalist that tells the stories of heroes. the tell the story of the brave troops that died. it is not all one sided. the military does not mind the good side. but when you have the mishaps and nasty things on film they are not our friends.

Your dedication and your professionalism is greatly appreciated Katie..thanks for your bravery.

What unit did you serve in? Because, this is one of those occasions, that if you were there, you have no place to judge them. Did you serve in Iraq? If you didn't, you're talking out of your ass.

I also concur. Without you and your fellow journalists, we are not truly free!

To quote another brave war journalist Kate Adie "up until 12yrs ago we never, ever, wore flak jackets or helmets, but now the nastiness has got worse"

this is true i have all my gear. i have been glade to have that gear many times. when i first started i was covering more guerrilla warfare where it is on the ground. there is so much more air power used today as well.

i have been surprised by how good some of the targeting can be. but not all.

I just have the faded scars, and thankfully the memories have faded as well.

report me. have at it. i call it as i see it. when a person knows nothing of which they speak as you do what else is there to say. i don't pity you i feel sorry for your family having to go through life in close quarters with you. i do realize that you have this golden idea of yourself and you may have others baffled around here but it is clear you have not a grip on anything that you type. you have no idea what it is to be logical. you have no idea what it is like to stand for the same thing consistently.

i am intolerant of ignorance and you are at the head of the list.

 I'll pray for you.

i do realize this. Congress was as well. that is why i hold them less responsible then the Executive branch.

the troops who were already enlisted at the time of the first strike could be excused for their actions as they were following the lie. those that reenlisted or came once the truth was revealed i have no respect for. they should of at that point said well George have a nice war. many you can get your oil buddies to help you out with this one.

Questions.

1. Are you no longer an American citizen? How did you do this?

2. Do you hold your new home country (france?) at ll culpable for using the oil for food program as a giant embezzelment scheme, in fact partially causing the war in Iraq?

Thank you.

he could have taken them out of there.

i have been living in Israel under a French passport. we are leaving at the end of the week and will be in South Afrika. we spent 6 months of 08 living there. it was a great time. we made a lot of friends and did so much. the land is beautiful. the poverty is alarming in certain parts. there is work to do. like any nation it has it's corruptions and struggles. it does tend to mind it's own business. it is not all about oil dollars. it does not send troops out to nation build. it does not have a huge impact on the world.

what it does have are a struggling mass of people that work each day to try and scratch out a living. it has kids that have grown up to become families of gangs. there is an entire sub culture that sleeps in the fields and in unused sewer pipes that are set to be laid.

there are a tremendous number of abandoned children. i do not see all the anti abortion people running to this nation to adopt. i see these kids getting weak and worn.

it is not America. it does not have a huge military. it does like America have a lot of good well meaning people. the leaders as all leaders have their issues.

i can do a lot of good in South Afrika. i have been lucky in life and can help some of those poor. i can maybe bring in some others that would help with such a task. we will never turn away a hungry person from our door. we will never arm ourselves against the rabble. we will just be to do what we can. that is the best i can do.

we did adopt a beautiful little girl from there her name is Kanshieka. she is such a princess. her parents are unknown, she was found on the streets at about 17 months. she is around 2 years old and will have a home for the first time since she was found months ago. we pick her up on Monday of next week. we look forward to that.
wow! a 2 yr old baby girl, i'm sure you will love her very much.

I learned to hate them in the 1st Gulf war.... I would do everything, I mean everything to make sure my picture was not taken.... Sometimes it wasn't very pleasant... I hate the press.

I have to disagree with you and Sarge here, sir. The press, while annoying sometimes, has helped bring to light many leaders and soldiers who have commited war crimes and performed poorly.

Abu Ghraib?
Steven Green?
Michael Steele?

Plus much of the press has provided many, many good press releases about things we did over there. I had embedded press more than once and the stories that were published were always positive in nature and really good PR for the Army and my unit.

yeah, she bashes the military with outright lies, ignoring the atrocities of the savages....

You and GD thank her for this? Telling, very telling.

I just remember them trying to "Catch" stories that never happened....

I didn't see much of that. In fact, I know of a very, very prominent CNN reporter that was privy to an incident by a U.S. Army unit that caused a lot of civilian casualties that he chose NOT to report. I won't mention his name, but his nose is crooked and he's australian.
