The Obama administration has taken a fair amount of grief for its campaign to marginalize Fox News, saying the cable network is “not a news organization” but rather “the communications arm of the Republican Party.”

Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus, not a fire-breathing conservative, calls it “dumb on multiple levels” – a distraction from policy messages, a boost to Fox ratings, and, she writes, “it deprives the White House, to the extent it refuses to provide administration officials to appear on the cable network, of access to an audience that is, in fact, broader than hardcore Obama-haters.”

Stephen Hess, a Brookings Institution scholar on White House press relations going back decades, says, “It makes them in the White House look terribly political, and political means petty in our lexicon.”

The White House has also opened itself up to charges that it is creating an “enemies list,” à la President Richard Nixon – a charge made on the Senate floor Wednesday by Sen. Lamar Alexander (R) of Tennessee, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate with a reputation for collegiality. He also cited recent administration criticism of the US Chamber of Commerce, the insurance industry, and the insurance company Humana, among others.

Obama’s strategy

Still, could the administration have planted seeds that could pay dividends down the road? Perhaps, says Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania.

“If the White House could persuade moderates that any story originating with Fox is politically motivated and hence suspect, it might reduce the initial impact of Fox-generated content,” she says. “What the White House appears to be trying to do is reduce the migration of stories from Fox to other cable, broadcast, and print.”

Fox has gotten mileage recently with stories about community organizers ACORN and green jobs “czar” Van Jones, who resigned his White House post after Fox and other conservative media pushed aggressively on his past associations.

“There are two audiences here,” says liberal columnist David Sirota. “There’s the Fox audience, then there’s the rest of the news-consuming public. You’re never going to delegitimize Fox with the hardest of the hardcore base. But if you can delegitimize it in the eyes of the rest of the media, that impacts the rest of the news-consuming audience.”

Fluff...Intended to distract from the healthcare debate. Best thing to do is ignore the silly man.

In other words, hope to keep other networks from picking up any news story that only FNC would break.

Why is that?

Because FNC is (supposedly) overly critical of The Obama's administration, and therefore woudl look for things that other networks might not.

Doesnt that denote a flaw in the other networks, rather than FNC?

There is an easy answer to this question. I tend to get long winded in making my point but the short answer is: As the war unfolds it will make it possible for Obama to identify those he needs to add to his enemies, and show REAL Americans those who are out to help Obama in his efforts to destroy this Nation for his Socialist/Communist pals.
For the vast majority of those of you feel educated but truth be known you still lack basic intelligence there is a thing known as the 4th estate. What is it you say? Well in the Constitution there are three parts of Government spelled out. The Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. There is another not spelled out but created because of the Constitution in the first Amendment. Known as the 4th estate from the early 19th century the Press followed by the broadcast media proudly held the distinction of being called the 4th estate and they were there to look out for the people by reporting the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth except for editorial comments. As Obama announced his candidacy that term lost all it's meaning and the Media for the most part became the Obamadia doing his bidding and even becoming complicit in the dissemination of lies and propaganda. With the exception of Fox News and a very few News Paper, the Media became part of the 5th column. What is a 5th column? A fifth column is a group of people who clandestinely undermine a larger group, such as a nation, from within, to the aid of an external enemy. A fifth column is a group of people who clandestinely undermine a larger group, such as a nation, from within, to the aid of an external or internal enemy.
Now I took and open ended Oath I took very seriously to protect and defend against just such groups and people Obama has surrounded himself with. Socialists, Communists, Marxists, and others who openly have talk and have talked about the destruction of America.
So once again the upside is clear and Obama has once again applied his amateurish knowledge and plans to create something he can not in the long run win.

This is a loosing battle of "poision the well", Fox is supposed to be the poison and the well is the other media outlets. The upside for Obama? If it works, it moves public opinion away from Fox and therefore cuts their viewership or makes them less credible/relevant. The problem is, it won't work, for if it did --- it's a slippery slope. Then who's next? CNN when they run something not so flattering about the White House? If one falls to this type of nonsense, they all do.

Obama and his administration picked the wrong war with Fox.

Speaking of 'politically motivated and therefore suspect' stories...

While I understand what the Obama administration is attempting to do - quite (not silence -there's a difference) who they see as a spin-myster, hyperbullic media outlet - nothing good can come of this.

You silence one news agency you don't like, what happens when the next one pops up?

That's why I am impressed the other "opinion" agencies are sticking up for Fox in a limited way.

The upside I see is individuals starting to look at FNC with a more critical eye. Becoming aware of the difference between News and Editorial.

I smile ironically when I hear "Fair and Balanced" -- it's funny, because FNC is anything but... The more people see that, the better.

The other networks are Obama's lap dogs. They'll pay a high price for that loyalty over the next three years.

I am really getting sick of all the conspiracy theories and the socialist, communist, and hitler statements going around. Obama is being a slimy politician, and a good one at that. Does anyone think he became president by mistake? The guy is smart. He KNOWS that Fox News will get better ratings if he attacks them. He doesn't care about that. He is not trying to silence them, he knows this can't be done.

Is he distracting from the important topics at hand? Of course, but that is not the main strategy in his politics.

Obama is picking his battles. Rather than debate with Minority Leader Boehner or Mitt Romney or Sarah Palin, he is fighting Rush Limbaugh and Fox News, neither of which can beat him in 2012. It is politics as usual and rather effective politics. Now lets drop all the conspiracy junk and bring the fight to Obama's door, rather than marginalizing ourselves.

"Fair and Balanced" eh? Like Ed Shultz and Keith Olbermann? Come on, every news station has its news reporting and its biased opinion givers. Nobody can deny this. Let's move on.

It all comes around.

The liberals are calling foul on FoxNews's critcal look at Obama no different then the Conservatives were calling bias and partisanship when CNN or MSNBC did the same thing to Bush for 8 years.

If a Republican wins in 2012 FoxNews will die down again and All of sudden this "thorough" investigational style that FoxNews is portraying will become partisan because it's against a Republican and performed by a non Fox network.

That's true, to an extent, but I don't ever recall Righties doing near this much crying about CNN, MSNBC et.al.

How will they pay? I do not understand the problem with Obama speaking out towards biased news sources and in my book? This makes him even stronger because he is sending out a clear message that his white house will take no crap!

Has anyone seen the documentary Outfoxed? I think it paints a pretty picture of the 2004 election, and how Fox News clearly takes yet another conservative direction, while slandering Kerry every chance they got.

Fox News is clearly a conservative network. It has been this way for years, only now their boy isn't president, so now their vile behavior is at an all time high, point at Obama.

I'm not the biggest Obama fan, but I think Fox is definitely has a conservative, political agenda.

Of course you don't and in 5 years the lefties will say the same thing about their whining of Fox now. Naturally people remember opposition more then affirmation.

Why would Obama waste his time on debating with anybody right now? Why would you want him to debate with Sarah Palin? Sarah Palin is not even capable of a debate! :rofl

Do you even watch Fox News? All they do is cry about how they think they are better than the others:roll:

EXACTLY.

He shouldn't be wasting his time debating with Fox News.

Funny, another one of your red herrings exposed below. Fox News is more fair and balanced than the other major media outlets. What does that say about the others? Let's just look at one of those others shall we?

Now back to the topic at hand. I love it when a partisan droid such as yourself gives a slanted news organization such as MSNBC a free pass and attacks FOX News for being "slanted". I got a kick out of the red herring you posted here - http://www.debatepolitics.com/bias-media/58582-fox-news-24-7-political-operation.html#post1058318288. Which one of those stories that was covered by a pundit/commentator and also covered by the news programming wasn't actually news? Are you saying that commentators aren't supposed to comment on a news story or that the news programming isn't supposed to report things like news?

Let's look at this from an unbiased standpoint shall we?

Does FOX News lean pretty far right? You bet they do.

Does MSNBC lean just as far to the left (if not farther) than FOX News does to the right? You bet they do.

Are there "sheeple" that only get their news from one media source? Of course there are.

Does FOX News cover news stories that the others don't (like ACORN, Van Jones, etc...)? Yep. Does MSNBC cover stories that FOX News doesn't cover? You betcha.

The point is that you can't get the truth from just one media outlet, you have to look at more than one. I mostly watch FOX News because I enjoy Glenn Beck, Special Report (w/ Bret Bair) and occasionally O'Reilly. I do watch CNN, HLN and occasionally MSNBC as well. Why? Because I would be misled 24/7 if I only watched one media outlet - doesn't matter which one. I get my news from various places - the ones I mentioned previously, Yahoo News and Google News along with a few others. So I'm capable of seeing the slant in FOX News, but I'm also capable of seeing the slant in MSNBC as well. And for every attack you launch at FOX News, there is one waiting for you to launch at MSNBC, and yet I have never seen you attack MSNBC once (if you have, please link me to it and I will apologize at once). Even if you have once or twice, it pales in comparison to your never-ending quest to expose FOX News for being the same misguided news organization that the rest of them are to varying degrees.

I for one am glad that FOX News exists. If I never watched FOX News, I would think that Obama is the greatest thing since sliced bread and that he is a Messiah here to save us all. You see the role of the Washington media is to watch government, question government and report their findings. Can you imagine how things would have looked had CNN, MSNBC and ABC not questioned the Bush administration? They did their job then, but are failing the American people now, thus showing their bias. It's right there, plain as day for you to see, but I realize that your partisan shades may prevent you from actually seeing, you know - the truth.

This current administration is the most un-Presidential administration that we've had in my lifetime. They are picking a fight with a news organization that dares question their appointments of devout communists, broken campaign promises, history of corruption and other shenanigans behind closed doors. If a Republican were in office, wouldn't you want MSNBC, CNN and others to do exactly what FOX News is doing now? You can't turn a blind eye to the side that you agree with if you want to be taken seriously (even in the slightest) when they have done and do the same thing that you accuse the side you disagree with of doing.

You have now been shown the error of your ways and your logic has been shot full of holes. I eagerly await your retort.

How will they pay? I do not understand the problem with Obama speaking out towards biased news sources and in my book? This makes him even stronger because he is sending out a clear message that his white house will take no crap!

They'll pay in ratings and credibility. They'll no longer be able to herald themselves as the watchdogs of our freedoms. This makes him look as if doesn't believe in the freedoms given to us by our Constitution.

Do you even watch Fox News? All they do is cry about how they think they are better than the others:roll:

The real question, is do you watch FNC? Because, it's not all they do. I believe you think what Media Matters tells you think. You probably still believe that Bush was AWOL...:rofl

Of course you don't and in 5 years the lefties will say the same thing about their whining of Fox now. Naturally people remember opposition more then affirmation.

Care to post something proving your claim? Prolly not, huh?

Be honest, how many posts have there been on this forum with Olby Watch used as the source? I haven't seen one yet, but I wasn't here when Bush was prez. The forums I was on when he was prez, didn't yield any Olby Watch posts, though. I'm betting it didn't happen any more.
