ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A suicide bomber attacked a suspected nuclear-weapons site Friday in Pakistan, raising fears about the security of the nuclear arsenal, while two other terrorist blasts made it another bloody day in the country’s struggle against extremism.

Increasingly daring and sophisticated attacks by terrorists allied with al Qaida on some of Pakistan’s most sensitive and best-protected installations have led to warnings that extremists could damage a nuclear facility or seize nuclear material.

Its not the fact that another terrorist blew himself up that is important here. It is where he blew himself up, and what the terrorists may be trying to get.

Article is here.

How close to success was he? What level of damage did he do to warrant this level of concern? It says "raising fears"... whose fears are raised?

Most nuclear facilities are like fortresses. It would take more than home made bombs to get into the place. I'd be more worried about a government coming to power that is unstable, because they have the keys.

I would say for them to be this openly attacking a nuclear-weapons cache in Islamabad they are no where close to obtaining one... not to mention they're getting desperate.

Last I checked the Islamabad cache is guarded by 30,000 of Pakistan's elite troops.

To equate the level of security in Pakistan with the levels we have over out nuclear weapons is a serious mistake. The training level of Pakistan's troops elite or not should give you pause. Our level is today not what it once was before people of questionable loyalty were allowed in the military here as has been seen in a few attacks on our troops from within. And yes they are rare but it only takes one breach to quickly multiply into a total disaster. That threat of a breach from within is at least 10 fold in every Islamic country where infiltrators are everywhere.
One of my concerns is the crazy attitude our military has with illegal aliens and allowing them to serve and we offered illegal immigrants a path to citizenship that included a stint in the US military. This is as nuts as it can be. A patient enemy cold put hundreds of sleeper cells in uniform and work their way into sensitive areas where you don't even need a suicide bomber to gain access. One or two enemies could create more havoc than you have ever seen or heard of in a very short time.
I won't detail how I would go about it but will say that it only takes knowledge easily available to come up with a recipe for disaster.
Think about this; The INS last estimated that 150,000, or about 10 percent, of Middle Eastern immigrants are illegal aliens.
Do you believe they are all here because they like Mac Donald Burgers and fries?

Please provide evidence for this claim.

This is drivel that has no relevance to the situation in Pakistan.

My primary concern is of a Pakistani government that doesn't have control over their nuclear arsenal. While things are very shaky in Pakistan, I would say that they at least have control of that little red button.

Now, if I might throw out an opinion as to why this attack happened. With Pakistani soldiers attacking the strongholds of the Taliban and al-Qaeda, it would be a safe assumption that these two groups are feeling a bit cornered. The best way to scare the Pakistanis and potentially get them to step back out of fear of losing their nuclear aresenal is to try and attack the area. Because they [Taliban and al-Qaeda] are getting more desperate, this attack demonstrates how they are really feeling the pressure.

But hey...That's just my opinion on it.

I would be more concerned with the people that moved to the United States illegally for the fast food. I cannot imagine what kind of place they must've come from. I am pretty sure "and a side of fries" is somewhere within every nation-state's constitution .

Read up on attitudes in Pakistan Few in Pakistan Support Extremists -- But Few Favor Military Confrontation, and overall there have been approximately 60 suicide bombings in Pakistan in each of the last two years.
As recently as 2004, roughly four-in-ten (41%) Pakistani Muslims said suicide bombing and other forms of violence against civilians could be justified to protect Islam from its enemies.
This is from within.
Few in Pakistan Support Extremists -- But Few Favor Military Confrontation - Pew Research Center

In a story from McClatchy in May 2009 it said : In taking on the homegrown Taliban, nuclear-armed Pakistan risks devastating retaliatory terrorist strikes in its cities.
Note the reference to Homegrown Taliban.
To turn a blind eye to the possibilities and logical conclusions is to play the Obama appeasement at any cost game which Neville Chamberlain found you can only loose
The possibilities are what you must prepare for not the hopeful dreams of amateurs with rose colored glasses that always want to look on the bright side until the planes crash into building or a mushroom cloud is seen in this countries heartland.
Obama is setting the stage for total collapse of our economic system and his weakness in dealing with the Taliban and Al Quaeda is gross negligence. It is our job to insure that the possibility of 5th column activities are minimized. Clearly if we are susceptible to infiltrators simply because those in charge are unwilling to deal with the serious border issues, and that includes Bush and Obama., other lesser Nations are also susceptible.
So I don't want to hear any weak kneed B.S. namby pamby lets all hold hands and sing Cumbia crap because it could never happen. The minute you think it can't or won't it will.
I look at it like being ready for the next big earth quake that could happen here because the San Andreas Fault is only a few miles away. When it comes to being prepared and having plans, it's always better to have nore than you need than to need more than you have.
So just make stupid jokes or convince yourself we're perfectly safe and so are all the nukes in the world and nothing bad will ever happen again because Obama has extended his hand and is willing to talk peace with anyone any time.
Give me a (Bleeping) break, and read up on history and the tactics of people other than the Saul Alensey's of the world. The enemy is playing for keeps and it's not a silly game to them. They put a great deal of thought into there attach plans and they do have patients. So keep laughing and making fun while they plot to kill as many of us as they can any way they can. Just because we don't bow down to their Allah.
Could I be wrong in wanting to look at every possibility and urge others be prepared for every eventuality? Not a snow balls chance in hell.
