The state attorneys general suing the Treasury Department charge that the federal government made no effort to find those people. They want the money given to the states, who have a legal system in place for finding the owners of unclaimed funds.

Oh this will certainly be interesting if this gets more steam.

Wow I have not even heard of this - do you have a link to the article? Why should the states get it? Why not track down the appropriate family members and give it to them? I.E. relatives of the deceased bond holders?

Actually the states have what is called escheat laws which is a way for states to cheat the owners of "abandoned" property out of their ownership.

So the states want this property becasue they know that it will be near impossible to find the rightfll owners since virytaully all of them are from the greatest generation or older and dead.

I am not buying that th states are being nice about this . THEY JUST WANT THE MONEY !!
