I am so happy about this. When I saw the interview with the family, the parents's reaction to their child saying it was for show exuded guilt in my opinion. We reap what we sow!

I thought I was going to throw up when I watched the coverage as the baloon was flying in the air and when they caught the balloon and there was no one in it. Talk about desperate for attention.

I had heard on another board that the family who owns the wheat field in which the craft landed lost their crop from all the emergency vehicles swooping in. No linky, though. :doh

This dude is up feces creek.

Wow. I'm glad that his upcoming appearance on Wife Swap has been canceled. I hope his wanting to be on TV is now a lost cause.

Agreed --- glad he's getting his come uppance. Fame whores piss me off.

If it is a hoax hopefully the family is forced to pay for all the damages and reimburse the tax payers for the cost of the police and other services. This reminds me the runaway bride story.

CNN, Wolf Blitzer specifically really acted like fools during this hoax. They took it hook line and sinker and invented supposed facts as they went along.
Excluded every other newsworth story of the day and covered the Balloon Family as if it was some sort of car chase.
I really tired of CNN just trying to make up sensationalized nonfacts as they go just so they can make money and boost their ratings.

I long for the days of real news reporting.

It sounds like they just wanted to let the balloon out a little ways for a few minutes, then land it.

Sounds fun.

But someone forgot to put the tether down, so the balloon was out of control.

Then the boy showed up missing.

Yeah, "it" probably was for the show, but "it" was making a flying a balloon a few feet off the ground for a few minutes. "It" was not staging a drama and involving the police.

Even though the child was not in danger yet anytime parents use their children for monetary or polirical gain it pisses me off. Those two cretans need to be punished to the full extent of the law.

good grief...even today this is CNN's top story. They themselves helped create this crap reality TV story. Stuff like this really makes them look like joke as a news reporting agency.

I didn't think that it was just CNN who made this into a story. If CNN was aiding and abetting these hoaxer parents CNN also set this duplicitous duo up for exposure by their own little gang member. Did not the kid still the beans or was it his lunch on CNN ?

It was all over MSNBC and Fox News as the main story of the day as well.

That was my thought before it became a hoax. To me, we shouldn't be responsible for this family's stupid invention mishap.

It's fantastic that children have a way of revealing the truth.

I am so scared for those kids tonight, especially Falcon. To be so upset that he was vomitting, suggests a very dark world inside that home. :(

When this happened CNN was all over it...preempted all other news to cover it. They didn't vet a thing and kept trying to make up the story as they went.
It was all about sensationalism and publicity. It really wouldn't suprise me if they were in on the hoax.

They continued to exploit the kid by putting him on their network while he was vomiting.

I do not think criminal charges should be involved

but they should be culpable for all costs this stunt created, including lost crops

Really?

Stop and consider not the local charges, but consider what the Federal Aviation Administration is going to do!

BTW - Check out www.balloonboygame.com

correct me if I am wrong, but if you are in a car accident that renders you near death, you are fortunate to have a lifeflight helicopter fly to the nearest trauma center. of which you are 100% responsible for the cost.
I fail to see how this is any different
the pulled a foolish practical joke and they should pay the price.

if you get lost in teh wilderness you are culpable for the search efforts to find you

or am I wrong about this, and a link would be nice to back up such a claim

I have had the exact same thoughts.:(

I think criminal charges should be involved. When I initially heard the news, I thought, "What kind of stupid person creates this balloon and has his kid in it?" Had those been the facts, I agree, no charges should be brought. However, these people KNEW their son was not in the balloon and actively hid him from police. That kind of mentality deserves criminal charges. It is the intentionalness (is that a word?) of the behavior by the parents that make it criminal, IMHO.
