Interracial couple denied marriage license in La.

So....where you come from, judges can tell people they can't get married because they won't be good parents? What country do you live in?
Thats not why he refused to issue the license -
It was out of concern for the mulatto children.

All racists begin their sentences with "I'm not racist, but..."

I'll be amazed if he keeps his job. I'd fire him.

are you comfortable using what I would suggest is a racially pejorative term like mulatto?

You can suggest that it is a "racially pejorative term" all you want -- doesnt mean much to me.

Its a perfectly correct use of the term, and the term absolutely, and correctly, applies.

Main Entry: mu·lat·to
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural mu·lat·toes or mu·lat·tos
Etymology: Spanish mulato, from mulo mule, from Latin mulus
Date: 1593
1 : the first-generation offspring of a black person and a white person
2 : a person of mixed white and black ancestry

Nothing worng with that term. I am one.
So is my nephew.
His mother, my sister, has been calling him "baby mulatto" since he was born.

I think you folks need to look at the big picture here. Can you just imagine what might happen if these people had a child who was half black and half white?

they might grow up to be president

within certain cultures it is, in the UK it is, why not use the term mixed race.

For instance if you had the bottle to use that term in my home city of Liverpool, you would not last very long.

I don't use that term at all, perhaps I just view it in a negative way. I prefer 'mixed race'

I have bad news:
I am not going to stop using the term just because you find it offensive.

This guy is a justice of the peace, not a judge. I don't know what laws apply to JOP's, so I can't say either way if he has the legal right to refuse to marry someone. Seems to me that he would, but I'm just guessing.

My point was that Hazlnut is all hyped up about this, but he didn't grow up in Tangipahoa Parish and can't say with full certainty that if he had, that he wouldn't have made the same call. The only reason this story made the news is because, 1) it happened in the South, 2) the JOP is white, 3) one part of the couple is black.
there is no "call to make". it's in the news because it's ridiculous.

Wow, what a completely absurd postion to take. Does he not see that these couples and their future children are NOT the problem? The problem lies in the sick society he lives in. By "protecting" the kids, he's only perpetuating the problem. Not to mention that he's basically calling everyone around him a racist. What an odd thought process.

What if this dude was black and he didn't want to marry a mixed race couple? Would all you Libbos still get torqued up about it?

I know plenty of black people that are vehimitly opposed to inter-racial marriages.

I'm no "libbo" but I'd definitely get torqued up about it.

My uncle, a white guy, married a lovely Somalian woman during his tenure as a relief coordinator in Africa. They turned out 4 genuinely African-American children, all of whom have turned into terrific people and who have been accepted by their peers.

then those people don't have to marry outside their race. but it's certainly not up to them to dictate other marriages.

the pleasure is all mine Goob****eman:)
'cause, you know, had I NOT been granted apporval from the mighty B L Zfluck, I would have lost all kinds of sleep.
:screwy

If this were a black man denying these two their marriage license.

There wouldn't even be a story... And that's ****ing outrageous.

Is the best interest of the any child the couple might have not a legitimate concern?

That's because there's ban on creating the impression that black people might be racist.

Just put boxing glove on when you retire, you will sleep then, as you are meant to, like a baby:)
