Their reasoning is that "someone might get offended"

Portland Oregon is certainly a left-winged city, but this is beyond absurd. :doh

Oregon Apartment Complex Bans Flying the American Flag - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News - FOXNews.com

An Oregon apartment complex is banning its residents from flying American flags, not only from their dwellings but also their vehicles, KATU in Portland reported.

Residents' outrage started when Jim Clausen, whose son is in the military and on his way back to Iraq, was told he couldn't fly an American flag from the back of his motorcycle.

If he didn't take the flag down, he was told he'd face eviction, the station reported.

"It floored me," Clausen told the station. "I can't believe she was saying what she was saying. It [the flag] stands for the people that can no longer stand - who died in wars. That's why I fly the flag."

Sharron White, a long-time resident, was told by management to take down the flag she's flown on her car for eight years because "someone might get offended."

"I just said to her, 'They'll just have to get over it,'" White told the station.

The ban also applies to flag stickers on cars, as well as sports flags.

That's a stupid, pointless, and disrespectful stance by the management.

Though, as a private residence the managers can enforce any restrictions they want as long as it doesn't inflict on constitutional rights. I personally, as I hope other do as well, would choose not to live there. Hopefully the apartment complex will be out of business soon if they don't reverse their absurd policy.

I don't think the ability to fly a flag on someone else's private property is a violation of a civil liberty.

Glad the manager came to her senses.

Perhaps not, but according to the manager her legal counsel told her that their apartment and car are considered private property.

Yeah, she did the right thing by reversing engines on that one. This would have went to court, and she wouldn't have won. Who the hell would be offended by the American flag?

Yeah, that's all sorts of stupid. i wonder if there was something else going on here.

That's why I refuse to live in a "Home Owner's association"....

Like Apartment buildings, you can be told what color you can paint your house...what trees you are allowed to plant, whether you can fly a flag....etc.
You can't even park in your own damned driveway in many of these HOA's.

I lived in an apartment complex in Tucson, AZ that had something like this right in the lease actually. The irony of it is that at the entrance to the complex there was an American flag waving.

The landlord is obviously a moron. Unfortunately, on both sides of the political aisle there are people like this who make a bad name for the rest of the sane people out there who don't pull crap like this. Of course, the minority of idiots like this person grab headlines because it's shocking and outrageous and people enjoy sensationalism.

Many places it's not a choice. You can't find anywhere in populated San Diego or Orange County that doesn't have an HOA. The new neighborhood down the street has $700/month HOA and Mellaroos fees on top of property taxes and mortgage. It's crazy.

I can only choose from 4 colors to paint my house. Celebratory decorations (Flags, Christmas, Halloween, etc.) can only be so big and stay up for so long. I'd love to live in a HOA free community.

By disallowing the display of the US flag, they committed the sin they had wished to avoid.

That's sad. I guess I've always been lucky...I've never had to live in one of those oppressive communities. I fly my flag freely....park in my driveway....plant whatever tree I feel like....and I'm thinking about repainting my house and redoing my roof and won't have to get pre-approval from some neighborhood group!

Strange, I would have thought you'd be thrilled to live in an HOA. You don't seem to mind the government telling everybody what to do, so what's the difference?

So move somewhere else.

Why would you think that?

I'm all for the Government staying out of my bedroom, out of my house....etc.

I have been against every attempt by the right-wing to expand Government into our personal lives.

Without sensationalism this forum would be less interesting...

We lived in a condo to a couple years when our "farm house " was being remodled and the land being subdived. The rules can be oppresive. Even during the short time I was there I got into a few fights with the nosey AHoles on the Borat of Directors and the Archetecture Review Committee. These people even had rules for how many stues one can have in their EXTERNAL EUA ( EXCLUSIVE USE AREA). The number and size of flags were restricted. You were only allowed to have sex with your wife ( or girl friend ) on Tuesday, Thursdays, & Friday. Ok I am lying about that rule your were allowed sex on Saturdays also.

My take on Condominium living is like a little bit of Communisn living wihin in a pool of capitalist self ownership. Or it's real Socialism - you know your are sort of free but then of course you are not.

I used to have a condo in the SF/Bay Area that had an HOA, but it wasn't oppressive or crazy and they had simple, rational rules. That said, they would never have allowed me to paint my front door purple.

I would never buy a house in a community with an HOA.

Depending on where you live though, sometimes that's a really hard thing to find. I think the principle of the HOA wasn't terrible. It was supposed to help keep things a step above dilapidation. But in practice, they're horrible commie organizations which should be destroyed.
