Arctic ice cap 'to disappear in future summers'

What rights do you lose by companies making a car have 25 MPG instead of 15?

It's a backdoor attempt to force people to stop driving large vehicles.

Now, with all seriousness, did anyone even pay attention to this ice cap before it became endangered?

They can cut me off if I don't pay the bill, but they can't cut me off at will.

They can cut you off be exceeding your allowed supply as well. Paying a monthly bill doesn't not equate to unrestricted supply of energy, water, gas.

These private companies you pay a service to will inform you to keep your thermostat at a specific level so you do not experience interruptions in your service.

They can cut me off if I don't pay the bill, but they can't cut me off at will.

Sure they can. It's their resource that they're providing to you. You can take them to claims court, of course... but the fact is that they can cut you off.

I'm entitled to own whatever legal property I choose.

Supply and demand determines the nature of the property you own, such as whether or not you own a fuel efficiency vehicle, or care about the environment. The government doesn't force you to do anything. If a green marketing is opening up, it's because manufacturers think it's a good idea.

There is nothing infringing your freedoms to buy whatever you want or pursue happiness, so enough with the mundane exaggerations already.

So? Do you have a right to drive a specific size of vehicle and is it a violation of your right if a private company does not supply you with the ability to buy what you want?

I want to drive a truck shaped like a giraffe. Can I sue GM for violating my right to drive such a vehicle by not providing me with one?

During WWII, people had to ration...*gasp!*... food, such a sugar. How dare they infringe upon the right of people that used 8 teaspoons of the stuff in their cups of coffee!!!

Please point to any part of the constitution or a law which says the government lacks the right to regulate those behaviors.

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Amendment X

Show me where it does.

The resources you use to do all the things you do are not public property, but private. You pay a water bill, an electricity bill, and you buy fuel from a company to power your vehicles. They can cut you off at any time they see fit.

Furthermore, there is no right which prevents the government from regulating the way you acquire those things. You aren't entitled to them under the Constitution. Those resources are subject to supply and demand which falls under the economic domain, not the government domain. The Constitution has nothing to do with what private companies do and don't give you; it is a set of limitations on government.

You don't know much about our constitution..... it only limits what the government can do, not what we as a free people can do.

Again:

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Amendment X

Uh, yeah, purdy much it does.

These private companies you pay a service to will inform you to keep your thermostat at a specific level so you do not experience interruptions in your service.

Never even heard of that happening.

Seems you two are in agreement.

I'm on city power. I would LOVE for them to cut me off because I ran my a/c too much. That would be a money maker. For me, that is.

The government doesn't have the right to control the market in such a manner that goods that are in demand aren't available. Doing so would violate my right to own property.

No it doesn't. In most cases you are allowed as much as you can use because the supply out weighs the demand, you are just charged for the more you use. This isn't always the case in certain situations.

Never even heard of that happening.
It happens every summer here when there is a heatwave and a few million people have their air conditioners on at the same time.

It comes down to everyone cuts back a little on usage or segments of population loss service entirely for X amount of time. In most cases the populace helps each other out and cuts back so their neighbors don't have to suffer.

The world is warming. All of the above does not negate the fact that the world is warming.

Period.

Average global temps haven't increased since 1998. Stop living in denial.

What is she cackling about? The world is what it is.

Nice of you to support a socialized energy.

:rofl

What an absurd comparison.

A WORLD WAR vs. a one degree rise in global temps over a hundred years. Yea, totally comparable...

Are you sure? Some people think San Diego is city power because it's through San Diego Gas & Electric. The company is actually a child of Sempra Energy, a publicly traded company.

You live in Libbo Land, so nothing surprises me about what happens out there.

I don't have a choice. Lafayette Utilities System is the only company that has rights to this area. They buy their juice from SLEMCO, then mark it up and sell it to me.

It's a private company that is owned by the city. I pay my bill at the same place where you pay property taxes, buy bar cards and taxi cab permits.

Just so I can get a clear understanding...You feel you should be able to use any amount of power you want even if that means someone else who is also paying for the same service losses their service because you don't want to cut back on your usage?

You always have a choice. There are more than enough ways to generate your own power if you choose to.

Obviously, if I'm operating an atom smasher in my livingroom, I can't use as much as I want. However, short of that, I can do what I please. I doubt very seriously I'm going to cause someone else to lose their service.

Not in an apartment, it ain't. I set up a wind generator on my porch and built a battery bank, just to run the TV and a couple of lights. Management told me to romve it and I refused. A few days later, I got a visit from the fire marshal. With him, he had the city ordinance that prevented me, a non-licensed, non-bonded technician from configuring any electrical apparatus in an apartment complex, without the express permission and direction of the owner of the property. So, no, in my situation, I don't have a choice.
