An independent report has blamed Georgia for starting last year’s five-day war with Russia, but said Moscow’s military response went beyond reasonable limits and violated international law.

The report commissioned by the European Union said both sides had broken international humanitarian laws during Russia’s intervention in the rebel province of South Ossetia.

The findings were particularly critical of U.S. ally Georgia’s conduct under President Mikheil Saakashvili, which could deepen Western concerns about his leadership and the stability of the former Soviet republic.

‘In the Mission's view, it was Georgia which triggered off the war when it attacked Tskhinvali (in South Ossetia) with heavy artillery on the night of 7 to 8 August 2008,’ said Swiss diplomat Heidi Tagliavini, who led the investigation.

‘None of the explanations given by the Georgian authorities in order to provide some form of legal justification for the attack lend it a valid explanation.’

Nice to know the obvious was pointed out. Georgia started, Russia reacted.

Though, the report also mentions that the region had witnessed countless provocations by the Russian forces previous to the attack.

Yea. Man I remember the crap fest that came about on these boards, with right wingers defending Georgian aggression... tsk tsk.

I was rooting for Russia from the beginning. I think Georgia asked for it, it was suicide to piss off the Russians. They should know their place or rather limitations

They obviously thought they'd be okay because they were allies with US or Europe would come riding to their rescue

...lol europe yeah right

We prefer to be warm in winter :2wave:
The only time when Europe would come riding to another nation's rescue would be if...
Ah forget it, I can't even think of an example.

And that somehow justifies Georgia bombing civilians and starting a war?

Nations provoke other nations all the time, but that does not start wars.. When the Russians sent bombers close to Norway and the US, did NATO start all out war against them? When China "buzzed" US ships, did the US launch huge war against China? When the US got caught with its pants down and forced to land a spy plane in China, did China launch an all out attack on the US?. Hardly... lame ass excuse you come with there.

Like it or not, Georgia started the war because of the a President that has and had delusions of grandeur. It not only cost tons of lives but meant that Georgia lost 1/3 of its territory for good.

Did the Russians overreact? Sure, but then again they did not start the war, but they sure in hell would end on the winning side once committed and they made sure of that.

Well I'll be damned, I didn't know I justified or excused anything, I simply mentioned a fact.

So much hatred for evil Georgia here.

By the way, Russia has bombed civilians just like Georgia, in fact, Russia has bombed more of them, including reporters.
But that's just another fact, not an excuse.

Don't give yourself a headache. I can't think of one either

Georgia aint evil lol... It aint the fault of Georgia that they have a bone headed egotistical moron as a president.

Let me quote a much used right wing excuse... War sucks, deal with it.

Well, Georgia is a democracy, so if you're going to blame someone blame the entire nation or don't blame at all. :)

The results of the last elections were hotly disputed (im surprised no one remembers this) so thats debateable. Even if they were do you belive everything your government does represents you 100%? I certainly dont.

Not you specifically, but the people as a collective.
That's the cost of democracy anyway.

Saakashvili is a bumbling idiot. Of course Russia was looking for a pretext to clobber him, but he more than did his part by giving them one. And although he may have been democratically elected (just as Putin was originally), he has grown increasingly authoritarian and is hardly a democrat himself.

None of the arguments for giving Georgia unflinching support during that conflict made a damn bit of sense.

George did not comot agression. Georgia was defending it's territorial rights.
Russia being a imperilast pig of a country used the Georgian deense of it's territory as an excuse to invade Georgia.

South Ossetia does not want to be part of Georgia, just like Georgia did not want to be a part of the USSR.

South Ossetia does not want to be part of Georgia, just like Georgia did not want to be a part of the USSR.

Even if that was true it was the Russians who stirred up the trouble. Furthermore how stupid can the South Osetians be by wanting to be a small tiny obscure little territory part of a giant imperialitic "country". South Osesstia could have been a "smaller" part of a small country thereby in reletive terms having a larger propportion.
Are the Ossetinas that stupid? Do they not see what the barbaric animals the Russians have done to the Chechens ?

So you are saying that Russian imperialism is ok but Georgia cannot defend it's own territory ?

South Ossetia does not want to be part of Georgia, just like Georgia did not want to be a part of the USSR.

How about Chechenya ? Does not Chechnya have the right to be free and not have the imperialist bastards those filthy Russians murder them ?

Whether you think it is better to be a small country or part of a large country is irrelevant. They did not want to be part of Georgia. Most of them either wanted independence or wanted to be part of Russia.

Maybe they were too distracted by Georgia shelling their cities to worry about what Russia is doing in Chechnya.

Nope. I'm saying that the South Ossetians don't consider their territory part of Georgia. They have no desire to be a part of the country.

My point was that if they were cognizant of what the Russians did to the CHCHENYANS they could see what was their future under Russia.

Of course.

When you say stupid **** like this, it is difficult to take anything else you say seriously.

A) South Ossetia is not Chechnya. The former identifies with Russia, the latter does not.
B) It's difficult for them to care about Chechnya when they are facing a war on their own territory, caused by the George Bush of the Caucuses, Mikhail Saakashvili.
