Georgia started war with Russia, but Moscow over-reacted, says EU report

1. maybe Tatarshchina will errupt.

2. I pretty much have given up hope on the Kuban and the Don Cossack lands.

3. The sad part is that Russia has pretty much killed off the quest for freedom of most minorities and many have "merged" into the Russian culture and processes.

1. What in God's name is "Tatarshina"?

2. Good descision since the cossack's code of honour reads "Cossack is a servant of his Motherland - Russia, and its defender against external and internal enemies. Cossack sees his main mission in serving the people of Russia for the sake of their welfare and not for his own gain and glory. For that cossack is ready to shed his blood." http://www.allcossacks.ru/3ofp/ofp06051.htm

3. Are you for real? You find it sad that ethnic minorities feel at home in Russia???!!!

It would be good in unrest would spill over from Afghanistan or China into the Muslim areas of Russia.

The outbreak of large-scale ethnic or religious violence in Russia or Russia's fragmentation would exacerbate geopolitical instability in central Asia. Power vacuums can be extremely volatile. Such events could also increase the risk of Russia's nuclear materials falling into the hands of unsavory actors.

In turn, those developments would further complicate difficulties facing the U.S. in Afghanistan, Pakistan's struggles with respect to the Taliban and its own internal governance, as restive elements would be encouraged by developments in and around Russia.

In short, from the particular focus of U.S. interests and broader perspective of international security and stability, the spreading of religious unrest into Russia would not be a positive development.

Believe me, Ukrainian diaspora that is composed mainly of descendants of OUN/UPA would be happy to watch the whole world go up in flames just to annoy Russia.

Nice to know the obvious was pointed out. Georgia started, Russia reacted.

Georgia started war with Russia, but Moscow over-reacted, says EU report | Mail Online

Funny thing is that I told you all this just a few days after the war. But then all of you were like usual wearing the pro-US anti-Russian goggles.

Aside from that it is important to point out that Russia was also poking at US Iraq and Afghanistan policies by so lightly going into Georgia without UN approval, or any approval at all, just like the US did in Iraq for example..

The difference was, if Russia waited for UN approval there would've been no one left to defend in S.Ossetia. Which was probably the point of US and Britain dragging their feet...

No, the reason the US UK axis "dragged their feet" was to finalize the propaganda campains and make timing perfect.

Few things to remember:

1. Mongolia lived for 25 years prior to recognition by "international community" (whatever the hell it is). S.Ossetia as well as Abkhasia were NEVER part of Georgia; they were part of Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, but that became history at the start of the 90-s.

S. Ossetia is sovereign Georgian territory try again.

2. Russian troops in S.Ossetia were part of a peacekeeping mission in which Georgia also participated.

Them being there without the approval of the Georgian government is an act of war.

3. When Georgia attacked, it killed Russian peacekeepers.

Georgia didn't attack they defended themselves from S. Ossettian Russian backed terrorist attacks. Try again.

4. Some 90% of S.Ossetians at the start of the war were Russian citizens.

Due to the warcrime of population transfer into another countries sovereign territory.

The only time when Europe would come riding to another nation's rescue would be if...
Ah forget it, I can't even think of an example.

The Crimean War?

Korea, first Iraq War, Kosovo,.. there are plenty of examples. In fact, I cant remember when the US came to the "rescue" of a nation without the Europeans.
NATO doesn't count, it's obliged to. :2razz:

NATO doesn't count, it's obliged to. :2razz:

So NATO does not count.. check.. UN too I bet.. Check.. that also cuts out most wars in the 20th century. Only one left is hmm.. Vietnam, that is if you dont count the acts of out right aggression by the US in Granada and Panama. And I question the wisdom of claiming Vietnam as a "saving the nation" thing.. considering the defeat there.

So we are back to square 1. When has the US or European countries outright come to the aid of any other nation alone?. Never.

Okee-doke, let’s try again...

S. Ossetia is sovereign Georgian territory try again.

In accordance with article 72 of the Constitution of the USSR “the decision on seceding from the USSR must be adopted by the free will of the peoples of the Union republic by referendum (popular vote).

In the Federal Republic, which has in its composition autonomous republics, autonomous regions and autonomous districts, the referendum is conducted separately for each of autonomy. The peoples of the autonomous republics and autonomous entities retain the right to decide independently whether to remain in the USSR or the seceding Union republic, as well as to raise the question of their legal status.”

Georgia: 26 May 1990 – declaration of sovereignty; 9 April 1991 – declaration of independence; 26 December – independence de jure.

S.Ossetia: 20 September 1990 – declaration of sovereignty; 1 September 1991 – a decision to become part of Russian Federation; 19 January 1992 – referendum on a) independence, b) part of the Russian Federation – 98% voted “yes” for both; 29 May 1992 – declaration of independence.

As anyone can see, S.Ossetians followed the law to the letter.

Them being there without the approval of the Georgian government is an act of war.

.

On June 24 1992, a quadripartite Russian-Georgian-Ossetian (North and South Ossetia) Sochi agreement was signed putting an end to Georgian-Abkhasian and Georgian-Ossetian wars. On July 14 1992 mixed Russian-Georgian-Ossetian peacekeeping force entered South Ossetia.

Georgia didn't attack they defended themselves from S. Ossettian Russian backed terrorist attacks. Try again.

In 1917 Georgia attempted to annex Southern part of Ossetia that led to few armed conflicts.

In 1920 Georgia once again invaded Ossetia killing 18 000 Ossetians and displacing 50 000 into its Northern part.

In 1922 Stalin divided Ossetia and included its Southern part into Georgia against the will of Ossetians.

In 1939 Ossetian written language was changed onto Georgian alphabet; and Ossetian schools were transferred onto Georgian language.

On the 23 November 1989 Georgian nationalists (30 to 60 000) led by future Georgian president Zviad Gamsakhurdia attempted to take Tshinval (capital of S.Ossetia). As a result 5000 Ossetians were killed, 400 injured, 2000 displaced and their homes were destroyed.

On the night of 5-6 of January 1991 Georgian government moved the units of the police and National Guard into the capital of South Ossetia; they began searches, arrests, looting, killing of Ossetians, burning their houses. In these circumstances, the Ossetian side was forced to take measures to defend itself. Defense squad managed to oust Georgian forces from Tskhinvali, after which the latter started punitive actions against the rural areas of South Ossetia.

On the 1 of February 1991 Georgians turned off the electric supply to S.Ossetia causing numerous deaths especially among elderly, newborn and sick.

In February of 1992 Georgian started indiscriminate mass bombardment of S.Ossetian capital that continued until 13 of July 1992.

On the 20 of May 1992 Georgians stopped and shot at point-blank column of vehicles carrying refugees from the besieged Tskhinvali: women, elderly and children. 36 people were killed. At a separate location Georgian forces buried alive 12 Ossetians.

Between 1989 and 1992 more than 3000 Ossetian CIVILIANS were killed, 100 Ossetian viliages were burned and 40 000 had to move to Russia.

Due to the warcrime of population transfer into another countries sovereign territory.

Btw, what’s the weather like on your planet?

According to whom? The US government? South Ossetians have never considered themselves part of Georgia. They've always considered themselves independent and/or part of Russia.

Why are you so concerned about Russia violating Georgia's sovereignty, but you aren't concerned about Georgia similarly violating South Ossetia's sovereignty? What makes YOU (or for that matter, the US government) in charge of deciding what's a country and what isn't? Who made YOU the world's cartographer?
