I almost forgot that this is his schtick "the blubber of fools he called “nattering nabobs of negativism” and “hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history.”

Remember that The Spiro of the Agew got credit for tis Saphire line " “nattering nabobs of negativism” ..

Sahire was also the one who "set up the famous Nixon-Khrushchev “kitchen debate” in Moscow". That exposed the basic weakness of the Communist system in front of the common person.

RIP Mr. Safire .... he was always interesting when I saw him on MTP. Good writer, too.

Another great writer has gone to bad they don't make them like Mr. Safire.

safire was the always interesting columnist for the grey lady, ny times, for 30+ years

regular on MTP, meet the press

speechwriter for nixon and agnew

altho fiercely anti-liberal, he was NO conservative

for instance, he supported w's war in iraq but strongly opposed the patriot act and detention of whoever it was we were (and still are) holding at gitmo

he was always super concerned with etymology, proper use of language

he was never boring, always original, always unique

like robt novak (and like myself), he was born jewish

unlike novak (and myself), he was a consistent supporter of israel

rip, mr safire

R.I.P. William Safire.

May he rest in peace. His commentary was unique, elevated (especially in contrast to contemporary political discourse) and a pleasure to read.

Another of the honest Paleocon pundits is now gone, following William F. Buckley in death. With the state of the Republican party as it is, it is a shame to lose these 2 true Conservative icons. I hope that, in the future, the GOP finds intelligent commentators, like Saffire and Buckley were . Right now, Coulter, Palin and Malkin just don't cut it.

These 2 deaths are a horrible blow to the Conservative movement in general. The only good news in all of this is that the Democrats have their own douchebags, such as Michael Moore, who speak for many of them, so they aren't really doing any better. But with all these blowhards, both left and right, running the media circus right now, there is plenty of room in the middle for an honest pundit, with a little intelligence, to make his or her mark in politics. But right now, I wouldn't hold my breath. The 3 ring circus is going strong.

With Safire and Buckley gone, the pickins are slim on the Right these days. Most of their spin doctors are infatuated with the Becks and Limbaughs, and think Lee Atwater was a 'genius'. The Times will have a hard time replacing Safire. I say this coming from the opposite side of his political spectrum, depending on what day it is and what traffic was like coming home ...

If I may be so bold as to add to you very good post I would place Bob Novak in with that crew. He did not have the intellectual prowness of Shafire ( no one on the scene from either side will touch Buckely in intellectual capacity ) yet he sort of was a part of that Troika !!
