Obama Aides: White House Unlikely to Close Gitmo By January Deadline - Political News - FOXNews.com

WASHINGTON -- President Obama is unlikely to close the much-maligned detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in time to meet the self-imposed deadline of January, as his administration runs into daunting legal and logistical hurdles in moving the more than 220 detainees still being held there.

The difficulties in completing the lengthy review of detainee files and resolving other thorny questions mean the president's promised January deadline may slip, senior administration officials acknowledged for the first time Friday to FOX News.

The White House hopes to regain momentum -- Obama's aides have stepped up their work toward closure and the president remains as committed to closing the facility as he was when, as one of his first acts in office, he pledged to shut it down, officials told FOX News.

The White House in recent months has also shuffled its staffing for who will oversee the closure of the facility. White House Counsel Greg Craig has been replaced by senior advisers Pete Rouse, Tom Donilon and John Brennan.

But legislative difficulties and legal snares have made it inevitable that the facility will remain open for some inmates after the deadline passes.

Ha Ha Ha this is funny when he told the World he was going to close GITMO with-in a Year I knew he was full of it. There is no way in hell that it's was going to be closed in 1 Year let along two. If I was a beating Person then I would say the earlist you might see it closed will be way after he loss's the 2012 Elections.

There is no doubt this is a failure for the administration.

Very true Mr. Obama set himself up for this one from the get go, he should have never made this promise, anyone who knows anything about how the US Military works knows it takes more then just a year for anything this large to close. That is why all Base that were ever on the BRAC list don't close for at least 3-5 years after being voted to close.

here are my ignorant questions:

1. why did he promise to close it, as in, why do people want it closed?
2. will the inmates be relocated, or are they supposed to be released?
3. if they are being relocated, why is a different detention facility better than this one?

Let me see if I might be able to answer your questions.

1.Politic's plan and simple by stating he was going to close GITMO while on the Trail he knew he could garner allot of Votes unlike Mr. McCain who was very Truthful that GITMO couldn't nor should it be closed.

2.Some are going ot be relocated but that has sort of stop right now,it's funny the whole World has been crying about GITMO but when we ask certain Countries to take some of the Terrorist they say oh sorry we can't do that but you still need to close GITMO.

3. There isn't any facility better or set up for this like GITMO is, the bottom line is this is the best place for them to be kept .

emdash here are my ignorant questions:

Did people want it closed? Wasn't it the media and Democrat party that pictured Gitmo into a Gulag decreasing our moral standing in the world?

2. will the inmates be relocated, or are they supposed to be released?

Some will be executed, most that were sent there have been released.

3. if they are being relocated, why is a different detention facility better than this one?

Scorpion89 is exactly right, there is no better location. Gitmo was a stroke of genius, it answers every question Obama is trying to spend tens of millions to ask.
