ACORN Vows 'Serious' Internal Probe, Sues Filmmakers - Political News - FOXNews.com

ACORN, in response to an undercover expose of potential wrongdoing by some employees, pledged Wednesday to follow through on plans to conduct a thorough internal review of its practices -- on the same day that the organization filed a lawsuit against the filmmakers whose hidden-camera sting brought the community organization to its knees.

The lawsuit, filed in a Baltimore court, stems from an undercover video showing ACORN employees Shera Williams and Tonja Thompson providing advice to two filmmakers posing as a pimp and prostitute on how to skirt tax laws.

The filmmakers, James O'Keefe and Hannah Giles, are named as defendants in the lawsuit, along with Breitbart.com, a Web site managed by conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart, which posted the videos. Breitbart released five similar videos that O'Keefe and Giles recorded in ACORN offices in Washington, D.C.; Brooklyn, N.Y.; San Bernadino, Calif., and San Diego, as well as the Baltimore office.

This Great I live in Balrtimore and have been following this most of the Day. Here lies the whole problem with there case. The problem is this if a judge actually allows this to go to trail then it will make undercover work done by Local and State Police illegal. Not only that there is a question of how the Maryland Law pass Constitutional Muster on reguards to the 1st Adm and the Press

Discovery will bleed ACORN like lambs at the slaughter. This is going to be great if ACORN is actually stupid enough to go through with it.

Were these undercover film makers acting under the same authority as local and state police do when they conduct their undercover investigations?

One is different from the other is it not?

The multimillion-dollar lawsuit cites "extreme emotional distress" on behalf of two workers who were fired after the video was posted online.

frivolouss

What's hilarious about this is that if they prevail, they open themselves up to suits for wrongful termination of the employees in question.

These investigative journalists aren't bringing criminal charges against ACORN, so it doesn't matter.

I don't think that ACORNs are stupid enough to actually go through with it. It's a bluff. If this goes to court, ACORN will be forced to open the books for all the world to see.

Yes and No, No on the fact they aren't Law Officers, yes under the fact that they were exposing a crime.

Allof the maryland TV Stations have called for this Law to be throw out because its a violation of the 1st Adm on Speech. The funny thing is a few years ago when NBC was running those Stings that caught alot of Perv's a few of them happen in Maryland and no one was screaming about he Law then.

My take on it is this no Law should stop the press no matter what you define as the Press and into todays World that can mean allot.

I realize that so the OP is incorrect in making the accertions that these suits and how they are brought forward could directly effect fed and local police undercover investigations.

Question for anyone who knows law better than I:

If the suit against the filmakers goes through and they are found guilty of violating the ACORN worker's rights, doesn't that make their videos inadmissible in court?

How so?....

to expose someone willfully breaking the law and then have to pay them any amount of money, let alone many millions, because they were "distressed" by it is to me the height of absurdity. the workers were not physically harmed, they were not treated inappropriately or unfairly, they are merely embarrassed because they were caught. I would be embarrassed too.

No actually the State and Local Police Unions are very worried about this if it goes to court and it's ruled that they(The Video Folks) did violated this LAw then it will open up a flood of Court Case to have undercover stuff thrown out.

GD you don't live in Maryland I do and have been following this whole thing everyday hell between Shelia Dixon and this it's all we every hear about here in Charm City.

The videos won't matter, either way. The damage that will be done to ACORN with the complete exposure of their books will be irreversable. ACORN won't go through with this suit, besides the Libbo politicians that are in bed with ACORN won't let it happen.

In Maryland yes the other States no since none of the other State have such a Law.

Well, let's hope so.

I can't wait until ACORN has to open all the closets. There's no telling what skeletons are going to fall out.

You can prove this? Remember:

she needs to prove a statement of fact, or qualify it as an opinion from the outset.

You can prove this? Remember:

Not sure if he can I can say this some of the Democrat in Baltimore are wishing this would go away because it will open up some major book of worms.

Not sure if you knw about are beloved Mayor Shelia Dixon well she is up on quite allot of Federal Charges and one item that keeps come up is her involvment with the local ACORN. If they do go to court it could force ACORN to reveal items about certain activities that Mayor Dixon may or may not have been involved with.

.
I did live in Annapolis MD for and year and I have several friends in the area In fact I talked with one for several hours last night. I will ask them and see how much the area is saturated with this story.

I'll let you know what they say.

I still don't see the connetion between private film companies undercover witchhunts and Fed and local undercover investigations?

They do not differ in any whay Scorp?

Not sure how it's playing in Annapolis, but since it happen here in Charm City it's been the talk of the town along with Mayor Dixons connections with the local ACORN Office.

As for the connection did you read my post in this thread about the Nightline Undercover Sting were they lured Pervs to house thinking they were going ot have sex with underage teens. well someof those happen in Maryland and no one made any complaints about those being illegal. Not sure I would call what these folks did a Witchhunt they did the samething that Nightline did. It's funny outside of Maryland the other States that htese Videos are from the Local and States AG are looking into filing charges against ACORN.

The complaint looks pretty formulaic and is based entirely on the Maryland incident. I don't know what they were thinking by adding breitbart, as that claim is almost certainly a nonstarter given his non-involvement other than publishing. I've seen a couple other things arguing that even the claim against the filmmakers is doomed to fail, due to the fact that the counselors had no reasonable expectation of privacy.

What's hilarious about this is that if they prevail, they open themselves up to suits for wrongful termination of the employees in question.

Exactly.

I know nothing about MD law, but what I DO know is that this suit is absolutely hilarious and that ACORN doesn't actually think it will work. Think about this for a second:

-The suit is being brought by ACORN, Tonja Thompson, and Shera Williams. Tonja and Shera are the two women who were seen on tape giving the legal advice. These are the women that ACORN fired, but they've now apparently decided that they want to file a lawsuit on their behalf. Which is it? Do you think they're terrible people who should have been filed, or do you think they're victims worthy of your pro bono legal work?

-They actually have the brass balls to base their complaint on the claim that because of these two filmmakers, the two women lost their employment. Take a second to breathe that in and swish it around.

ACORN is suing these two filmmakers, alleging that because of their actions, these two women were injured because ACORN fired them.

wtf.
