The president said he is "happy to look at" bills before Congress that would give struggling news organizations tax breaks if they were to restructure as nonprofit businesses.

"I haven't seen detailed proposals yet, but I'll be happy to look at them," Obama told the editors of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Toledo Blade in an interview.

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) has introduced S. 673, the so-called "Newspaper Revitalization Act," that would give outlets tax deals if they were to restructure as 501(c)(3) corporations. That bill has so far attracted one cosponsor, Cardin's Maryland colleague Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D).

The Hill

So now the biased media gets to be tax exempt? What makes them different than any other business in this country, that they're becoming antiquated? Technology is making the newspapers obsolete. The Federal government is yet again supporting failure rather than embracing change, rather strange for this administration. Then again, maybe not so strange considering 95% of the MSM is in Obama's corner anyway.

Uhh Obama said he'd be "happy to look at" the bill, not that he was giving total unqualified support to such an idea.

That sounds like a polite way of saying that he doesn't think this bill is actually going to go anywhere. I agree that newspapers should not be bailed out...and I highly doubt that Congress has the stomach to seriously take up this cause anyway.

There is something very dirty about the government being involved in newspapers this way.

Besides that i think government money invested this way should be made through the idea of a bounce back happening at some point and i dont see this happening with newspapers.

Lets allow them to die peacefully that inject them with drugs and electric every last breath out of them.

Newsflash. The internet was invented. One day papers will only be bought for Sunday coupons.

Newspapers do have several advantages over the Internet.
A man cannot successfully wrap the daily garbage in the Internet as he can with newspapers.
Newspapers make great kindling for starting fires ( heating the water and the home). The Internet does not burn that well, usually.
I can swat a fly with a newspaper; can anyone do the same with the Internet ?

Then why talk about it if he is not giving such an idea support?

I hope you're right.

got to go with kandy this time. Nohting Barry's comment implies he supports it. just a token response

Yes.
Freedom of the press -requires- a seperation of press and state.

To be fair, I also buy the Sunday paper for the crossword. :)

Sure you can. It must be a virtual fly on the internet, though. Just smack it with a virtual flyswatter.

Twitter + the internet of things + automated fly swatter. You've just swatted a fly with the internet.

I love reading the Sunday paper. I have subscribed to it most all my life.

But I will be the first to admit that the printed newspaper's, as we know it, time has done come and went. Subsidizing it will only postpone the inevitable and throw good money after bad.

Well how else is he supposed to keep the ministry of propaganda from going belly up?

Here we go again with all the white racism!

The only reason why anybody would be against this fantastic idea is if they were RACISTS! It's because President Obama is black! :(

Your making a big deal out of nothing, what's wrong with him saying he would look at a bill?

Do you even know what the bill says? Obviously not, do you realize the bill would just give tax breaks to media outlets if they become non-profit businesses? Do you not know of the tax breaks large corporations get? Why are you crying about the government promoting free media for the people? Do you not want people to be informed? This bill isn't limited to MSNBC or other liberal media outlets, it's not like the government will control the media. Please understand the bill before posting next time.

Media outlets which rely upon governmental benevolence in order to remain operational...

...no conflict of interest there.

Yeah, since there's something in the bill that says this only works for liberal outlets and conservative outlets will be banned...
