BBC NEWS | UK | UK Politics | Gaddafi son resists IRA pay-out

Colonel Gaddafi's son has said Libya will resist demands from the families of IRA victims for compensation.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi said any claims for compensation based on Libya's supply of explosives to the IRA would be a matter for the courts.

He told Sky News: "They have their lawyers, we have our lawyers."

It has emerged that Gordon Brown had declined to put formal pressure on Libya for compensation. He has said the UK will support families making claims.

Speaking about the looming British attempts to claim compensation, the Libyan leader's son said: "Anyone can knock on our door. You go to the court."

Oh this is good so his Son has told anyone to go to Court no I think it will be either you starting discussing this or you lose your nice Oil Contract and other stuff. I think Mr. Brown needs to step up and show he is a leader and rebuke these comments now or just resign.

To be brutally fair.. if the UK goes after Libya for this, then the UK should go after the US for funding the IRA for decades..... without the funding from the USA, there would be no explosives bought.

Labour to be consistent? Never!

Brown is doing this as a attempt to save himself

Has nothing to do with consistency. If it was a conservative government then they too would go after Libya for some sort of compensation, and yet never after the US..

it is called...

Hypocrisy.

Wouldn't there be a key difference with US and Libya.
UK victims is accusing the Libyan Govt. for supplying explosives whereas in comparison i thought it was individuals in the United States who gave money. No Government input. Correct me if wrong.

The reality is the US allowed this to go on until May 2001. The government was not, as far as we know ;), providing the money but it was quite happy to allow it to be collected until then and for the IRA to take advantage of US banking.

The US State Department has officially designated the Irish dissident republican group the Real IRA, as a foreign terrorist organisation.

This means the group, which has been blamed for bomb attacks in Northern Ireland - including the 1998 Omagh bombing - and mainland Britain, will have any assets it has in America frozen.

A notice in the Federal Register said Secretary of State Colin Powell made the designation, which took effect on Wednesday.

The sanctions also mean:

* Suspected Real IRA activists denied US visas
* Ban on Americans giving them money or support

The US State Department said it was also designating the 32 County Sovereignty Movement - said to be the Real IRA's political front - and the Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association.

It said in a statement: "This action makes it illegal for persons in the United States, or subject to US jurisdiction, to provide material support to the Real IRA or any of its named aliases, requires US financial institutions to block assets of the designated groups and enables us to deny visas to representatives of the group."

I think it is some kind of passive providing. ;)

Government input comes in many forms.. for example, not stopping the flow of money and arms from the US to the IRA is also a form of "input" by the US government.

There is no difference.
