Justice Stevens slows his hiring at high court - Yahoo! News

Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has hired fewer law clerks than usual, generating speculation that the leader of the court's liberals will retire next year.

If Stevens does step down, he would give President Barack Obama his second high court opening in two years. Obama chose Justice Sonia Sotomayor for the court when Justice David Souter announced his retirement in May.

Souter's failure to hire clerks was the first signal that he was contemplating leaving the court.

If he does retire, and it is probably time for him to do so, it won't effect the makeup of the court, but will put a liberal in that spot for a long time to come most likely. Will be worth watching to see if he does retire.

If he does retire...I hope and pray that Obama has the spine to nominate a true liberal to the court and not give us another moderate. We need to balance out the extreme right-wing picks of GWB to protect some balance on the Supreme Court.

He'd been telling his past clerks that he wanted to beat Douglas's record for most time served on the bench, but it's become increasingly obvious that that wasn't going to happen.

This will be interesting to see.

If you truly believe that Alito/Roberts are "extreme right-wing picks" and you want to balance them out, does that mean that you want Obama to replace Stevens with an "extreme left-wing pick"? Or do you instead believe that there's really no such thing as an "extreme left-wing pick" and that such an appellation is only applicable to conservatives?

I'd like Obama to nominate an actual clown, you know red nose, big shoes. It shouldn't affect the rulings much, but should add to the palatablity of the proceedings.

He'd do better hiring someone who would uphold the constitution.

That's blasphemy in liberal circle, sir!!! How dare you suggest such a sin. How about a Gay Pride Marcher with a pink robe?

:spin:

i'm quite uncomfortable with justices remaining on the bench to "beat a record".......

It's Stevens who may be retiring, not Scalia.

Why? Is there any evidence he is unable to perform his job?

Pure win, sir.

I'm still giggling.

no, there's not. i just don't like the idea of holding on just to beat a record. what's the point?

There are definitely extreme left-wing picks. I have little hope that Obama has the spine to actually pick someone like that though.

Roberts, Alito, Thomas, Scalia

Kennedy

Ginsburg, Sotomayor, Stevens, Breyer

How is it not currently "balanced"?

He's appointed for life and gets to make that choice if he wants.

Ginsburg, Sotomayor and Breyer are no where near as "liberal" as "Roberts, Alito, Thomas and Scalia are far right.

Essentially what we currently have is 4 ultra right-wing.
1- Centrist, 2 left-leaning moderates, 1 liberal and 1 unknown.

whats wrong with that?

They are appointed for life, or as long as they wish to serve, so whats wrong with beating a record? lol.

Such as?

Rofl. You have absolutely no clue what you're talking about on this.

Personally I would love to see Obama nominate Pamela Karlan (Stanford Law School). She would be the first openly gay person on the Supreme Court and is a true liberal.

As for your second contention. Say whatever you want. I work in the field of law and study law every day. I stand by the assessment that I listed. The "true liberals" on the court are dying off. There hasn't been a true liberal new to the court for decades. Yes, there are some left of center. But since we haven't had a real liberal President, even the Democrat picks have gone more moderate.

If we're going to nominate people based on their sexual practices, why not a young, attractive nymphomaniac in a see-through robe?

Yes, of course you would try to distort my post into saying something that it didn't say....why am I surprised.

Nowhere did I say that she should be nominated because she is gay. I said that she is a true liberal and that's why I would like to see her nominated. She would also be the first openly gay person to serve on the SCOTUS....that's just an observation.

Sometimes I ask...why do I even bother with you people?

You should have taken that up with Madison and his cohorts back when you had the chance. ;)

Exactly so.

Me too, liblady.

So Roberts and Alito are "extreme right-wing picks," but Karlan would simply be a "true liberal"? Do you realize how biased your position comes across here?

I guess it all depends on your perspective.
