S.J. couple hopes their poster inspires county’s students

Well it's inevitable. Anytime there's a group of pictures of past Presidents it's likely his image will be among the chosen because he's the only one that is black. This is likely going to be true for motivational posters, pictures, textbooks, magazines, etc.

I know, but I was brought up to believe that race doesn't matter and it does but only if your not white.

It's insanity.

I think it beats the **** out of "protecting them" from information.

There is a difference between us and it probably won't be resolved.

You somehow believe that all schools teach children to be educated thinkers and I believe that they teach children to be obedient workers.

I can't convince you of this but that is what I believe.
My kids are allowed to access all information but I will not tolerate indoctrination.

Diversity matters. Especially in schools. Let's say a text bookmaker needs 8 images of past presidents in 2015. What's wrong with the maker of a textbook using Obama's image so black kids aren't looking at a bunch of images of all white dudes? The same would be true if a woman were President. Her image would be used more often 'cause she's a woman. She has an ability to motivate girls in school that the men simply lack.

You're getting hung up on race. It's diversity and it's not such a horrible thing.

Translation: I'm the only one who gets to indoctrinate them.

To be critical and logical thinkers, I fully admit it.

I teach them to look at all sides of the argument before making a judgment call.
Not just emotion and not just logic but at times a blend and if they invariably side with something I disagree with, so be it.

Hell, my son wanted Obama to win the election and I did not tell him he was wrong.

That is different from something like, he is the most important president because he is black.

I have no problem with the example of a textbook.

huh, who? Kids get all kinds of nutty messages in school. We did, the kids will. There's always something they're scaring the kids to death with. My kids actually worry the planet is dying.

When I was in school I was convinced that if I had sex I was gonna drop dead of AIDS the next day.

Kids are tough. They get older. They weed out the dumb crap from the useful stuff. The beat goes on.
or instead than can just have a day of **** and giggles at an amusement park

If you do not think he is going to go into 'saving the planet from global warming' and green crap, and other stuff like that so he can 'fundamentally change the nation' you are deluding yourself

We will see. But I highly doubt it.

I don't see anything in the article about putting it up in 4th grade classrooms. That wouldn't make sense. According to the article:

They'll be playing it at my son's elementary school.

it was historic.

Every presidential election is historic. Actually, this one was historic in that the people didn't decide. The media did.

Nobody is suggesting that he's the most important president. But, to young black folks, he is the most RELATEABLE president, because he LOOKS LIKE they do. He's like a rock star in the inner city.

Now, that's a trend, it may pass. But in this situation, he's the equivalent of Kobe Bryant telling kids to read.

Do you have a problem with a Kobe Bryant poster in an inner city school?

This isn't political. You're making it political, when in reality, it is just using a popular role model to encourage kids to stay in school.

Here is some stuff from the "Grades 7‐12 Menu of Classroom Activities: President Obama’s Address to Students Across America" http://www.ed.gov/teachers/how/lessons/7-12.pdf

• We heard President Obama mention the importance of personal responsibility. In your
life, who exemplifies this kind of personal responsibility? How? Give examples.
• How are we as individuals and as a class similar? Different?
• Suppose President Obama were to give another speech about being educationally
successful. Who could he speak to next? Who should be his next audience? Why?
What would he say?
• What are the three most important words in the speech? Rank them. What title would
you give this speech? What’s the thesis?
• What is President Obama inspiring you to do? What is he challenging you to do?
• What do you believe are the challenges of your generation?

I think this is an exercise in critical and logical thinking, and some of those questions are important ones for people of that age group.
