S.J. couple hopes their poster inspires county’s students

I think this is an empty hullabaloo about nothing.

The people protesting it are giving it way more energy and 'legs' than it actually deserves.

Just a question: do you have school aged kids?

Like I said earlier, I don't mind the idea of the POTUS addressing the nation's kids. This guy is a little to divisive and sneaky for my tastes, and I do not appreciate the way the school swayed the kids to be Obama fans last fall. Just the other night my kid turned my stomach by showing me something they used to do at recess. They kiss their biceps and say, "Barack" (kiss right right one) "Obama" (kiss left one). WTF is that?

Actually, I don't even want the thought planted in a bunch of 4th graders (my kid's class) that some day they could drop out of school. At this age, they're not even thinking about it. So it's pointless and a waste of school time IMO.

I don't see anything in the article about putting it up in 4th grade classrooms. That wouldn't make sense. According to the article:

They've printed enough 11-by-17-inch copies of the poster to distribute to high school classrooms in the four-largest county districts and are working to raise the final $1,500 to provide larger, 2-by-3-foot posters for common areas in 29 public campuses.

Does anyone else find this troubling?

No, not particularly. I think that in inner city areas where the drop-out rates are incredibly high, BO is seen as a role model. To me, it's no different from having a poster of Booker T. Washington talking about education.

Like him or not, he's a public figure, and for many children, particularly black children, he's a role model. And frankly, he beats the hell out of Dennis Rodman.

Does anyone else find this troubling? I don't want a poster of any politician being placed throughout public schools. This is an ad created by democrats and funded by liberal advocacy groups that is being given free space in public schools. Ridiculous.

Also, this is a bit concerning:

I'm not sure what this means as I can't find much information on this topic anywhere else, but what the **** is a "national address to students?" It better not be something that teachers are making kids watch during the school day.

As an aside, these idiots in this article are the most stereotypical pseudo-intellectual dbags imaginable.

You got chills? Really? Get ****ed. And yea, Obama's the first one to value education - it's not like we had a university president with a PhD in office before. :doh

Basically, this is an all-around crock of ****.

I don't think an image of the President is out of line in any American school. The message "stay in school" is hardly unique or political.

indoctrinate how? by encouraging them to stay in school? horrifying.

The standard high school and/or junior high is full of motivational posters like this one:

the office of the president is entirely different.

So was Powell, and then Rice, did those garner any "historic significance" in our public schools?

I would have no problem if they did. Would you?

At this point, we are desperate, particularly in black, inner city schools, to keep kids motivated to stay in school. Successfully educating young people makes a huge difference in this country's entire economic fortunes.

Anything that encourages kids to stay in school and succeed is okay with me.

I saw a Winston Churchill poster in a school in Camden, NJ. Better organize a protest.

I personally would love to see posters with both of them encouraging kids to stay in school and study. They are both excellent examples of what people in this country can accomplish, and would love to see inner city kids use them as role models.

It dumfounds me that the anti-Obama crowd is getting so desperate that they attack this kind of thing.

Indeed, and we missed a wonderful opportunity IMHO when these two made history, and all becuase they were considered "token conservative".

Very sad.

Teachers, unions and the Democrat party have too much control over the public school system, at the detriment of our school aged children, unfortunately.

They weren't missed. You can find Colin Powell posters on allposters.com. Durr.

Yes, I agree, and you could even throw in a few black libertarians, that couldn't hurt either. This is supposed to be about choice, I don't see much choice offered, not at all!

Remember the early 80's and Nancy Reagan's just say no anti-drug campaign. Her image was in schools. Who cares?

I do, but only because I loved that message and am a big Nancy Reagan fan.

Ummm, hello, you can't swing a cat in an inner city school without hitting an image of Nelson Mandela, Booker T. Washington, or Martin Luther King. Seriously.

You should get out more. This is NORMAL.

They where libertarians? I think the reason you don't see many libertarians in school is because, well, there aren't many libertarians.

then you have no problem with children watching obama's inauguration?

Hah. I read that as black librarian.

Maybe more kids would be interested in reading if the people in these pictures were hotter.
