U.S. State Department staff have recommended that the ouster of Honduran President Manuel Zelaya be declared a “military coup,” a U.S. official said on Thursday, a step that could cut off as much as $150 million in U.S. funding to the impoverished Central American nation.

The official, who spoke on condition he not be named, said State Department staff had made such a recommendation to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has yet to make a decision on the matter although one was likely soon.

I have no problem with cutting off aid to Honduras because a country with an $11 trillion debt has no damn business handing out money to anyone. The reason the Obama Administration is moving towards this, however, is completely asinine and an outright lie. Zelaya was not deposed by a coup. He was democratically and constitutionally removed from office by a unanimous vote of the congress. Every member of his own party voted in favor of removal for God’s sake.

This action doesn’t surprise me in the least however, given Obama’s liking of socialists and radical Marxists around the world.

Agreed. Our government shouldnt be sending aid to anyone period. It should be left to the people to help if they wish but our government should never tax us amd to send that money to others.

The whole World condemned the coup. The military raided his his house and flew him out of the Country in his pajamas.

Only in bizzaro wingnut world is that legal and Constitutional.

Every tin pot dictator claims his actions are legal and Constitutional. Only those who do not respect the Rule of Law (like the right wing in America) support illegality and assaults on Democracy.

This is what you call having no principles.

The Right in America's only guide in taking sides is to ask, ....Who's on the Left and who's on the Right? In this case it was the Left being denied justice so they are just fine with that as long as the Right benefits.

This is how low the GOP has debased themselves.

Well if these people are so democratic why has there been such a heavy crackdown on the opossition?

Obama is turning into what I feared, i wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt but he trully is a Liberal lapdog.

Maybe we can start cutting off foreign aid to other countries too.

You are off course. What does this have to do with the GOP or any other American?

Maybe we can start cutting off foreign aid to other countries too.

Yea that 0.1% of GDP is really hurting aint it? And the fact that US aid has fallen in % of GDP by over half the last 10 years dont matter either right?

But where should you start.....

Awesome, now if we can just cut the rest of the world off too.

While I agree that the US should be in the process of ceasing the handouts to the world due to our own debt, I do believe that there are deeper and more evil pockets to deal with first than Honduras. Honduras has generally been a friend to the US and is more deserving than the many countries who take our money and stab us in the back.

This is merely political posturing by the leftist US administration in order to show their solidarity with the dictators of the world. Obama must be anxious that he has not obtained dictator status yet, but he's working on it!

You mean the joke called the United Nations and every "tin pot dictator" condemned the so-called coup! Calling this action a coup is a great example of the Orwellian term "newspeak"! Chavez, Ortega, and Castro all opposed the action by Honduran military and politicians who actually support the constitution that they took an oath to uphold. Let's face it, Chavez, Castro and Ortega never met a real coup that they didn't like! The conclusion: this was not a coup or they would have loved it! Coincidentally, budding dictator Obama was on the same page as his more experienced dictator brethren!

Every tin pot dictator claims his actions are legal and Constitutional.

See my paragraph above for any readers who require a definition of "tin pot dictator"!

By rule of law, you cannot be referring to the US constitution. You know not of what you write! Keep writing - you're making a great argument for us freedom-loving supporters of continued democratic-republic status for Honduras. I suspect that your definition of "right wing" probably includes the most freedom-loving, constitution (i.e. ultimate rule of law) supporting, most decent people in the US, therefore, I call BS on your assertions!

I'd cut off Spain first.

Since I want all foreign aid to be cut off, why does it matter where we start?

They dont get any!.. in fact at the rate the Spanish banks are buying up US banks, we might be owning most of the US soon!!!!

I sure hope so, let you guys be burdened with the debt for a while.

Okay, the US spends about 24 billion a year.. a third of that goes too 2 countries.. Israel and Egypt. If you add Colombia and Pakistan then those 4 countries make up about half the spending.

So are you sure you want to get rid of the aid.. I mean it is only 24 billion.. In the whole cutting spending wheel.. where do you think you can get more money.. cutting aid, or cutting earmarks and other pork?

Spanish banks are some of the best capitalised in the world :) so no worries there.. remember you got to pay us back muhha..

I don't think you can defend the coup in Honduras and claim that you support the rule of law. Honduras' constitution specifically forbids the exile of its citizens. The method of exile for a standing president violated both the spirit and letter of the law. Honduras has a constitutional procedure to impeach presidents. This procedure was not followed and the rule of law was abandoned. Surely you are not arguing for the selective enforcement of the constitution?

I could care less of foreign aid is a huge chunk of American tax payer money or only a little chunk of American tax payer money. It is still a lot of money that can be used over here. I am no fan of pork spending/earmarks either(although technically I also consider foreign aid pork spending too.)

The former, given that those in the latter had to actually break the law before losing their licences

Yeah, Chavez's law, which is for shutting down, taking over, or jailing anyone who disagrees with him.

Such claims are of course as baseless as claims of the democratic nature of Zelaya's removal. However, I'd suggest starting a separate thread about Chavez if you insist on speaking of him, though I'd also recommend reading this first.
