Fla. students' shirts: 'Islam is of the Devil'

I am going to jump in and say I think the kids should not have been sent home. They were exercising their freedom of speech and this is no different than kids and adults burning American flags abroad. I am not in favor of bigotry, but freedom of speech is freedom of speech.

Freedom of speech rights don't exist in the school setting. :) Or in court, for that matter.

In a school?
During school hours?

Wear appropriate clothes in school whilst learning, wear what you want and make your political statements outside of it

Why not?! People are such *****s nowadays. Ooooh, don't talk about my religion! Please, people need to get a grip and realize this is a cruel world and there are those who exist that disagree, extremely so, with you. Perhaps wearing them at school was a bit extreme, but schools ban all sorts of clothing for ignorant reasons. There used to be a time in this country when people were free to say what they wished as long as they did not impede the rights of others.

That is why I said abroad.

That's why your opinion is invalid, you're trying to compare two different things. Those kids can wear those shirts in public. The school didn't want them to wear it on their property, that's fine. School board sets the rules for the school. What people do abroad or even in public or other private establishments has no bearing on the school, its rules, and their decision to have the children remove their shirts.

Hell when I was a kid, we couldn't wear those Big Johnson T-shirts to school.

Schools are not there for political statements. It is their for education and they have their own rules that must be followed.

I would not accept any form of politics or religious statements to be entered in school time.
If someone wishes to make their voice heard in UK, Go protest. Or lobby your MP, or even better! Go speakers corner.

Just not in school.

Why can that shirt not be worn on the street? No one is preventing them

THAT is my point. but i guess i failed miserably. whatever.

I was attempting to be the opposing voice in this thread, though I am not very good at it. I agree with you guys, just trying to spice-up the conversation.:2wave:

Like high-profile removals of students exercising First Amendment rights that received national media attention?
This is a pretty well established area. School officials have the right and obligation to make calls about what is and what is not acceptable behavior and dress in their schools.

It is debatable as to whether or not hey should have been sent home etc.
However, it's not because of FoS grounds. The only issue is whether or not it was actually disruptive to teh learning environment. The FoS is not absolute nor does it apply equally under all circumstances.

You must really hate Muslims, because the think everyone else is an infidel.

Islam is a religion, not a race, therefore it's not a racism.

It's more than a religion. Political Islam is what we have to fear.

Wow. I hate when people who call themselves Christians act like this. The stupid is out in force on this one.

Yeah,,,they should learn to treat others, like Muslims do. Cut of the heads of Infidels, Stone Women to death for trying to Live,, and blow themselves up,,,for their God.

Uh...Tinker v. Des Moines.

Cohen v. California.

Within constitutional boundaries.

I'm not surprised by racist and ignorant rhetoric coming from a conservative church group either.

I take it you're "at peace" with Muslims screaming "Death to America", and killing us, along with themselves. Most Christians I know,,,bore the Heck out me trying to "Save Me".

While Muslims try to kill me, and themselves for "Paradise".

Our laws keep them in check and they do not intend to overthrow our government.

Many of us would beg to differ. They have been trying to infiltrate their brand of "Christianity" into the government for decades and they constantly try to destroy the Constitution and change our "American way of life" by imposing more big brother government into our lives.

Maybe not "overthrowing" the government in the Central America military coup style, but essentially the same type of thing.

To fundamentalist Christians / The Religious Right, anything they disagree with is "of the devil". Regardless of whether its muslims, gays, mainline denominations, liberals, moderates, civil libertarians, environmentalists, holidays like halloween, and so on.

Let me know if they start doing any else other than annoy you Disney.

Luckily....they have pretty much been neutered and really are little more than an anoyance these days. However, politics in this country can change rapidly. We were one vote away from having many of our rights and way of life stripped away by an activist right-wing Supreme Court. Thank God that Obama will be able to appoint at least two, possibly three justices to restore the balance. The problem with many Americans is that they don't realize that much of our way of life has been under attack (until its gone).
I'm feeling much more comfortable that that is unlikely at least during my lifetime.

As an Agnostic, I don't much care for Muslims, homosexuals, Liberals, moderates/"road kill", "free drugs libbies", "the sky's falling" enviros, or Halloween.

It has nothing to do with a "Religion". Just Common Sense, and Personal Choice.:doh

Agreed?

You do see the humor in your saying to me ''Thank God". While you bash "Christians" for following "His Word"? In their eyes, of course.

B.O. is a complete waste to me. He's spent his entire career as a "User". No amount of denial on your part will ever "change" that fact. Case in point,,, $9 Trillion in Debt, if America follows that idiots path.

I have nothing against anyone's religion. I am not bashing "Christians" for their religion but rather for their political agenda that encompasses more of their time and efforts than their religion does. These "Churches" have become political action groups much more than they are true "churches" any more.

It sounds like you're taking 'Umbarge" to People "using" the Church. Like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton do all the time. And Bill Clinton in the past... And the "Rev" White telling B.O. for 20 years,,,that he '"never said" anything about KKK America.

Please...
