President Obama takes the stage at VFW convention in Phoenix

The article said:
A man, who decided not to give his name, was walking around the pro-health care reform rally at 3rd and Washington streets, with a pistol on his hip, and an AR-15 (a semi-automatic assault rifle) on a strap over his shoulder.

"Because I can do it," he said when asked why he was armed. "In Arizona, I still have some freedoms."

What the **** is a semi-automatic assault rifle?

Last time I checked, an AR-15 fired a centerfire rifle cartridge and was semi-automatic... Therefore making it a semi-automatic rifle.

****ing gun grabbing ****s and their idiocy in pushing terms that don't apply. UGH.

I doubt that some local reporter is either trying to grab anyone's gun or pushing terms on anybody. He probably just doesn't know guns very well. Can't say I know much better myself.

It's much the media's fault that there is so much fodder of scary words surrounding firearms.

Much like.. "assault weapons", "Gun violence", etc..etc.

What is wrong with a semi-automatic rifle?

There is nothing wrong with calling an ar-15 a semi-automatic rifle.

There is a big problem with calling it a semi-automatic assault rifle.

Just out of curiosity, why would that be wrong (I know very little about gun classification)?

Because classifying something as something else in the spirit of villifying an inanimate object is wrong?

[ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_rifle]Assault rifle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

This is the same media that have coined up the terms "assault pistol", and "gun violence"... whereas a pistol cannot be an assault weapon... and guns do not commit violence.. They're a tool used by a person to commit violence.

So is the reason the reporter was inaccurate that the man's gun has no fully automatic mode?

Yes, it's not "select fire". :) Therefore it is not an assault rifle.

Difference is, you arent charged with getting the facts right when reporting the news.

All assault rifles are fully automatic.
All "assault weapons' ares semi-automatic.
The terms are not interchangeable.

Of course, it was a poor showing by the reporter. I'm just saying, never suspect malice where incompetence fits just as well. Rather than assume that he was trying to push terms that don't apply (as the OP did) I'd assume he just didn't know any better. Halo would call that gun an assault rifle, and that could very well be the closest the reporter has ever been to a real gun

Considering that the ar-15 was developed into the m16 and m4, calling it a semi-automatic assault rifle isn't really that inaccurate. Sure, its not the most precise definition, but its a minor technicality.

Yes, it -is- that inaccurate.

Words mean things. If you cannot take the time to learn and uinderstand the basic definitions of the basic items found within an issue, you cannot possibly have a reasoned position regarding same.

nice, I got my **** wrong.

Still doesn't qualify as an assault rifle by definition.

Considering how you toss around the word liberal and who you apply it to, I would suggest you don't start nitpicking on extremely precisely definitions for things.

I guess I'll be the first to say walking around in the city at a protest with a rifle is pretty idiotic.

Yes it's legal, but so is wearing underwear on your head.

Give me a reason why it's idiotic that doesn't involve "it scares people."?

Cause your being afraid of my rights doesn't trump my rights.

I agree you have every right to look like a dumbass.

Oh, neat, so you're just a dumbass and don't have a point to make.

gg.

I'll take that to mean you have been sufficiently schooled in the error that iwas your comment.

In an awe-inspiring act of pity, I will let you correct for typos before responding.
