Twitter is 40% ‘Pointless Babble’: Report

Twitter is 40% ?Pointless Babble?: Report - General * Europe * News * Story - CNBC.com

Less than one in ten tweets have any real "pass-along value" and more than 40 percent of tweets are “pointless babble,” a study by the research firm showed.

The research carried out by Pear Analytics was designed to take a snapshot of what people actually used the booming social networking site for.

If someone can find the link, I was the first to post about twitter a year or so ago...

as like then, as in now, I still do not get it....

couple things...

What kind of loser do you have to be to put up "tweets" about going to the pool, work, drinking cofee, what not?

And who are the losers reading your crap? :lamo:

On top of the stupidity of Twitter, is this "Reasearch firm" that spent all of this money to state the obvious....

I will tip my hat to what twitter did for Iran.... But that was an anomoly...

Ummm....how is the fact that Twitter is for twits "Breaking News"?

40% huh, that low? I always figured 100% of what was on Twitter was pointless babble.

I was going for creative license.... To some people there is nothing more important than twitter. :lamo
Yeah, and for some people nothing is more important than getting government health insurance....

Hmm.....might there be a correlation? Twits tweeting for healthcare on Twitter, producing 40% pointless babble?

I have seen twitter's practical uses. When that huge explosion happened in Montana earlier this year Twitter was an unbelievably good source of breaking news info. People were getting info via Twitter faster than the news could. The news couldn't even remotely keep up with it. Other than that, I agree it is, for the most part, pointless babble.

My only issue with that, is its rumor spreading. How can you verify or trust what you read?

I agree. I have never been on Twitter. I do have a Facebook page (although I am not a regular by any means), and I am STUNNED by the crap people post about. My neighbor posted that she was unable to open the sliding glass door in her hotel room. A friend of mine posted he was watching TV with his daughter. A friend of mine posted that he was getting his car fixed. A friend posted that she was at a baseball game. (Hello? Why aren't you watching the game then?)

GIVE ME A BREAK! I wouldn't even bore a dead person with such inane facts!

I have the same feeling when I watch television news, actually.

Just have to look at both of them with a healthy skepticism, I guess.

That's very true. Sometimes it's probably a small price to pay for getting quicker information I guess. One can always verify later.

Kinda hard when the tweet has you out on the street with your guns fighting the revolution. ;)

Just 40%?

Twitter is a great tool if used appropriately.

For family and friends it can be a useful tool for giving any type of updates taht may deem meaningful to the recipients. Just this last weekend my cousin went to the Sugar Shack for brunch and sent out a tweet to the family stating so. Four of us showed up to join him. Without twitter or similar broadcasting service he would have had to call 10-20 people to give a similar announcement.

During the birth of my son I used twitter to let friends and family know what was going on through the 30 hours my wife was in labor. It was great not having my phone ringing none stop or having to call everyone. Those people that we cared about most were at the hospital and this allowed me to communicate with them in the waiting room without having to leave the delivery room.

Twitter feeds are in the eye of the beholder. What may seem like pointless babble to someone may be a meaningful update to the specific audience that "babble" is targeted at.

Agreed. We use it all the time for communicating to a sports-related group I'm with. Since you can set it to receive only the tweets you want to receive on your phone, all the clutter can be held at arm's length on the website, while the more useful info can be routed straight to your phone.

I use it at work too for PR announcements. I believe I read a while ago that Dell made a revenue upwards of $2million off sales announcements using their twitter.

Online marketing wise its an excellent tool, if used properly. It allows for short and to the point announcements without the need of designs or fluff that goes along with a email blast or print advertisement.

40% is being incredibly generous.

Sometimes humans can be so damned stupid.

You can't.

Then again, I JUST KNOW Jesus has returned, because of all the major disasters covered by the major news outlets in which the number of dead reported decreases over time...

I only use Twitter to keep up with politicians, campaigns, and other political issues.

Example: Scott Walker is a strong gubernatorial candidate for Wisconsin in 2010, I have him as a friend on Twitter so I can stay updated on where he will be speaking, get an idea of where he stands on issues, and other updates from Walker himself.

That is just one example of how Twitter can be useful. I agree though that most of it is useless.

What you and Gibberish mention makes absolute sense.

40% isn't close. 100% is more like it.

I sort of get the Facebook thing, though I don't actually do it. Twitter seems pathetically mundane to me.

SO more than half of the tweets are NOT pointless babble? That seems to be a lot better than what I get on the local news.
