French officials have banned a Muslim woman from swimming in a public pool while wearing a swimsuit that covers her entire body.
The woman had swum in July in the pool in Emerainville, east of Paris, in the "burkini" - a loose-fitting garment resembling a wetsuit with a hood.
But staff stopped her from swimming in August, citing hygiene concerns.
It comes as the government examines ways to limit burka use after the president said they reduced dignity.
France is home to Western Europe's largest population of Muslims, with about 5 million living there.

At the pool, staff "reminded [the woman] of the rules that apply in all (public) swimming pools which forbid swimming while clothed," pool management official Daniel Guillaume was quoted by AFP as saying.
The woman was a French convert to Islam, and had bought the swimsuit in Dubai so that she would not have to uncover herself to go swimming.
"Quite simply, this is segregation," she said, according to Le Parisien newspaper, which identified her only as Carole.
"I will fight to try to change things. And if I see that the battle is lost, I cannot rule out leaving France."
Emerainville Mayor Alain Kelyor said "all this has nothing to do with Islam", adding that the swimsuit was "not an Islamic swimsuit" and that "that type of suit does not exist in the Koran".

I admire the French on this one. I hope they push this all the way. :good_job:

I think it's really dumb. What's the point other than to discriminate against Muslims? If a swimsuit is designed as a one piece with a hood, why should that be banned? It's not like they're wearing cloths in there, it's a designed swimsuit. Who the **** cares? Why the **** is it anyone's business? Jesus, people need to start learning to mind their own damned business.

First the burka then .... ??

Actually its not part of being Muslim. It has nothing to do with Islam, its just a public sign of oppression that they must cover up there bodies because there family wants such things. Im glad the French are banning it.

I supported the ban on head and face coverings, but this is just pushing things too far. (Yes, I know the swimsuit included a head covering.) People should be able to swim in a public pool without displaying their entire body for the world to see.

What's next, banning one piece?

Good point. I think the banning of the Burka, however, was totally justified.

What if she just wanted to wear it? It's not oppression then. Maybe someone wants to. I mean ****, we give tickets out for people who run around outside naked in public. Is that oppression? I think at some point it's ok to demand cloths. And if someone wants to wear more than the minimum required, then so be it. It's stupid to make these laws, and these laws are nothing more than xenophobic attacks against a specific group that some folk in France (not the most accepting of folk) don't like.

I really don't see what the problem is.

I'd wear it when i am feeling fat.

Looks nice too.
Style it out a bit, glasses, hat, maybe flip flops ... :p

Why on earth would you support that? I don't understand how this dress code nonsense actually gets turned into law.

I could understand not allowing face covering to go into bank for security reasons, but forcing women not to cover up because of what you percieve the covering as representing is downright stupid.

It is counter productive if you ban it.

Xenophobia.

I can see for puposes of the State say for a driver's license or some other ID that the face has to be visible. It may be possible that a cop may have to you take off a face covering if pulled over or something and he needs to make sure the person in the ID is the same as the one sitting in the car; things of that nature fine. But just full out bans...it's not justifiable. It's just hatred and ignorance.

Umm...keeping the swimming pool clean...?

There's a rule against swimming while fully clothed. It's not discrimination. Any muslim that wants to swim, can, as soon as they follow the rules for pool use.

If they don't like those rules, nothing is stopping them from building their own swimming pools....using their own money.

They are minding their own business.

Their business was to ensure people followed the rules regarding pool use.

The damn female muslims in this country wanted to have their driver's license photos taken while their were wearing their masks....er veils. That didn't fly, fortunately. If they don't want to have their photo taken for their driver's license, with their full face showing, then they don't have to have a license....but they're not allowed to drive without that license, just like everyone else.

No, that violated the basic human right of everyone who wants to be a billboard for their own gullibility.

This was a simple "no clothes in the pool rule".

Umm...keeping the swimming pool clean...?

And how is that accomplished by banning full length swimsuits with hoods?

Oppression doesn't bode well with pool water.

Really? Then maybe they should stop oppressing women by telling them what and what not to wear.

And how is that accomplished by banning full length swimsuits with hoods?

You mean, besides the requirement that people shower first?

It'll keep huge masses of possibly dirty cloth out of the water.

Naked...the only correct way to swim.

Ok, if it is a skinny dipping only pool I can see the justification in disallowing all swimwear. I am fairly sure that isn't the case in this story though.
