WASHINGTON — A pair of nuclear-powered Russian attack submarines has been patrolling off the eastern seaboard of the United States over recent days, a rare mission that has raised concerns inside the Pentagon and intelligence agencies about a more assertive stance by the Russian military.

The episode has echoes of the cold war era, when the United States and the Soviet Union regularly parked submarines off each other’s coasts to steal military secrets, track the movements of their underwater fleets — and be poised for war.
The Russian Navy likely can't keep the subs there for long, but what the hell are they doing parking two Akula class fast attack subs off the US East Coast?

Think about who the president is and you'll have your answer.
That doesn't answer the question. There are a lot of better ways the Russians could discomfit Dear Leader--delivering a new smackdown on Georgia, for example. Two boomers would definitely be provocative saber rattling, but fast attack subs do not carry ballistic missiles. The Akula class is supposed to be a counterpart to the US Navy's Los Angeles class fast attack submarine.

They don't have the resources for extended and repeated deployments that far from home port, so what do they gain from this?

I once met a sub captain who said he used to sail into Vladivostok harbor and take pictures of the harbor facilities through the periscope. They would listen for the sound of anti-sub helicopters warming up and leave before the depth charges arrived.

Perhaps the akulas are here in some kind of support role for a PBO takeover of the government. His replacements are already in place; the czars.

I know, sounds crazy. It's not like it's ever been done before...oh, wait...check that. It has been done before.

I bet he had brown eyes, too.

Have you like gone off the ****ing deep end or something? You are sounding like Cindy Sheehan did with Bush.

I don't expect you to get it. I mean, that very thing has happened several times in the 20th Century. I understand your lack of knowledge, though, so it's all good, bro.

Dude, seriously, lay off the sauce before posting. Your posts have mad NO SENSE.

Your posts of Obama somehow taking over the government is about as bat**** crazy as Sheehan.

Someone ping UtahBill. If I remember correctly he's a former submariner and might be able to shed light on what is normal and abnormal in respects to submarine patrols.

Really, the USSR helped the U.S. overthrow itself by supporting a democratically elected President...do what again exactly?

You got a link with dates?

It doesn't sound crazy--just ****ing retarded as hell.

Yeah, we probably still patrol there. Damn, that's a boring mission, 57 days at see, ran out of rice, even, and didn't leave until a shipmate had a medical emergency, since our replacement was late in arriving....

....been there, done that.

However....how does a submarine hear the ASW helicopters "warming up"? That part of your story sounds like total BS.

688 class boats can carry TLAM-N's, both as launched from the standard torpedo tubes and from vertical launch mini-missile tubes added to the ballast tanks. Also, some 688's have been "stretched" to make them mini-boomers, with a capacity for a fair number of Tomahawks.

The Russian boats could have similar arrangements.

Most likely though, those two ships were caught during their routine patrols, and it's no big deal. The Russians aren't going to even consider starting or provoking anything when their agent in the White House is doing all the damage to the US he can for free.

Well, I show you some links when you show me where I said that. Thanks.

Big deal. They have likely had subs in and out of our harbors for decades. Same the other way.

yep..

however in these days of paranoia on the US right, then such stories will just fuel their delusions about basically everything :) as we have witness in this thread and other threads, plus see in the media, blogs and so on every day. The right are getting more and more desperate and paranoid and that is a dangerous combination.

We probably do the exact same thing, massage their coasts.

We absolutely do the same thing.

In fact, this is what the LA class subs spend their time doing in the Atlantic...following Russian subs around and dodging in and out of their waters.

In the pacific, we do the same thing with the Chinese subs.

Seriously. This is just a game that the fast attack subs play with each other.

It was, not much anymore. What's wrong with the picture, however, is that we all know about it.

No. Not likely, that. Their boats were noisy damn things.

But we've certainly followed them and their "trawlers" off shore to see what they were up to in the Cold War.
