House bill calls for federal tax on mileage

A bill up for consideration in the U.S. House seeks to change the way highway users are taxed to fund transportation.

Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-OR, introduced a bill that would establish a federal pilot program to study vehicle miles traveled, or VMT, as a possible supplement to or possible replacement for the current per-gallon fuel tax. The bill, HR3311, does not specify what would happen to the fuel tax if a VMT program were established.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association believes that although a VMT tax has captured the imagination of some, it remains unproven, even as states like Blumenauer’s home state of Oregon continue to study it.

“The current system of levying federal taxes on trucks is as discriminatory as it can be to small business, and harmful, but there are lots of unanswered questions with a VMT. And those questions need to be resolved before we start launching down that path,” OOIDA Executive Vice President Todd Spencer told Land Line.

Blumenauer is calling for the establishment of working groups to study technology – possibly a GPS system – and other factors that would go along with a federal VMT program.

The democrats are at it again... Trying to find clever ways to tax people so they won't realize their being taxed.

a democrat wants to use our satellites to track car movements.

didn't see that one coming /sarcasm

Forgive them fellow Americans for they know not what they do.
I wonder if it will sink in to these Liberals before the complete collapse of the entire economy that taxes cause less spending and therefore less taxes revenues. More taxes also restrict growth cause more job losses and it's complete backward thinking that taxing will help anything. A child can understand this why can't the Socialists?
I know there is talk about taxing all food that contains sugar and fat like beef and pork and a lot more things. Do they not remember that every time there are tax cuts even if they go to the wealthy, that they creates jobs and investments. I'm not rich and those cuts never helped me other than keeping the economy strong and the Country moving forward instead of the backward motion Obamsnomics has put us in today.

Personally I think this is a very bad idea. The current tax on gas is a much more fair was to tax and pay for highway/road construction.
It also encourages people to buy more economical vehicles.

Oh, they know exactly what they're doing. The negative results from the legislation passed since February are very intentional. They have to take our money, so we don't have the ability to decide for ourselves. All that, "economic justice", that PBO told about. We don't deserve the money we've earned. Remember?

Mmmmm....government tracking.

**** them. I pay taxes, I buy gas, maintain the damned roads and shut the **** up! God damned government always looking for new taxes, new data basing, and new tracking methods.

A tax on vehicle miles requires a report on odometer readings, correct?

How long would it be before odometer reporting is replaced by GPS tracking?

Of course, any taxes that are passed on truckers will inevitably get passed on to the American consumers.

What's next taxing the air we breathe? Will we all be issued an electronic meter and have to pay a monthly tax on the air we breath?

How far will the narrow-minded Dhimmicrats go?

Maybe you missed this excerpt from the story:

I see no evidence in the article that this bill has any supporters other than the single congressman that proposed it. Transmitting concerns over the bill to encompass the entire Democratic Party seems overblown. As usual from this crowd.

I see... If it's a democrat that proposes something that sucks for America, and no other democrat that supports such a proposal is publicly mentioned, then it's not really a democratic proposal...

Got it... Thanks for the liberal logic.
