Obama administration withholds data on program

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Obama administration is refusing to release government records on its "cash-for-clunkers" rebate program that would substantiate—or undercut—White House claims of the program's success, even as the president presses the Senate for a quick vote for $2 billion to boost car sales.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Sunday the government would release electronic records about the program, and President Barack Obama has pledged greater transparency for his administration. But the Transportation Department, which has collected details about 157,000 rebate requests, won't release sales data that dealers provided showing how much U.S. car manufacturers are benefiting from the $1 billion initially pumped into the program.
If CARS is such a smashing success, what is Dear Leader hiding?

LaHood, for example, promotes the fact that the Ford Focus so far is at the top of the list of new cars purchased under the program. But the limited information released so far shows most buyers are not picking Ford, Chrysler or General Motors vehicles, and six of the top 10 vehicles purchased are Honda, Toyota and Hyundai.
Why the misinformation?

Why the secrecy?

It's such a success that we can't begin to tell you....no seriously, we're not going to tell you...

Cool, they're selling cars that are actually made in America.

I hear they are going to rename the program The Japan/South Korea Rcovery Act. ;)

.

Transperancy, eh?

You may be surprised to know that all the Asian imports are not really imports.

They are moving a lot of production to the U.S. In my little geographical are, we have only foreign car makers. Honda and Suzuki among others.

Quick question: what would you do if you had the $4500 with no stipulations?

I'd buy me a decent used vehicle to have as a backup.

And the answers are unanimous like I expected, which leads me to believe that we are going to see a lot of defaults from people who are taking out loans to buy these cars. This will be a great program to examine 5 years from now.

I'd put it in my savings account to go with what I'm already saving towards a car and down payment on a house.

I want to pay cash for a car this time.

I've always paid cash for all the cars I own/ed.

I think more importantly but not usually noted is the rate of roll over car loans.

Were a person finances a car holds it for less than the loan term and then combines the loan of the old car with that of a newer car.

That is what we have been experiencing lately. This program gives the incentive for that to continue to happen.

I've owned a total of 3 cars in my life, the first 2 I paid cash for and they were very used, the 2nd was almost a real junker and my last one I financed at crazy terms.

I finally paid it off last March and do not want to go through that ever again.

Because it's a complete Charlie Foxtrot. That's why. :rofl

I bought a wrecker yestersay, so I can cash in all those repos that are going to be popping up in a few months. I should have all the formalities settled by monday and I'll be the newest repo company in town.

The best part, is when some of those folks have to bring their cars back, ebcause the CFC money didn't make it to the dealer and their clunker is being turned into cast iron lawn furniture in China. I wonder what cutesy little name their gonna give to that bailout.

The Associated Press has sought release of the data since last week. But the public and Senate Republicans demanding more information will have to wait for details because federal officials running the program don't have time to turn over data delivered by car dealers, said Rae Tyson, spokesman for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

LaHood said in an interview Sunday he would make the electronic records available. "I can't think of any reason why we wouldn't do it," he said.

DOT officials already have received electronic details from car dealers of each trade-in transaction. The agency regularly analyzes the data internally, producing helpful talking points for LaHood, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs and other officials to use when urging more funding.

This transparent administration, is the most non-transparent one I've ever seen. They can't seem to come clean on anything.

and cuz ford, which did not get a bailout, is dramatically outperforming govt motors

Are they actually withholding it or is it just not done?

"Never suspect conspiracy if incompetence could achieve the same result" fits here, in a way

The point is, Obama and the democrats are trying to obtain another 2 billion dollars based on the reported success of the program. Don't you think congress, as well as the public, needs to see the data that proves that another 2 billion is warranted?

Obama administration withholds data on clunkers

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is refusing to quickly release government records on its "cash-for-clunkers" rebate program that would substantiate — or undercut — White House claims of the program's success, even as the president presses the Senate for a quick vote for $2 billion to boost car sales.
The Transportation Department said it will provide the data as soon as possible but did not specify a time frame or promise release of the data before the Senate votes whether to spend $2 billion more on the program.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Sunday the government would release electronic records about the program, and President Barack Obama has pledged greater transparency for his administration. So much for "the most transparent Administration in History.. this is the which lied about cover up here?

Re: Obama administration withholds data on clunkers

They are trying to keep lid on many facts.
1. They were trying to boost sales of cars of the Big three American Car companies but forgot to limit the program only to those cars.
2. Most of the sales are imports.
3. The dangerous hazardous waste produced by destroying perfectly good car's engines are a problem.
4. The benefits to those who take advantage of the program are minimal at best and the costs far exceed any benefits by a wide margin.

Other than that and maybe more it's working just fine.

Takes time to collect and report that much data, so I can believe that the administration isn't eager to issue incomplete info.

All the more reason to hold off on releasing more money...
