Post Office Looking at Closing up to 1,000 Offices

The post office has been struggling with a sharp decline in mail volume as people and businesses switch to e-mail both for personal contact and bill paying. The agency is facing a nearly $7 billion potential loss this fiscal year, despite a 2-cent increase in the price of stamps in May, cuts in staff and removal of collection boxes.

And I can see why. Email is the way to go, folks. Last time I went to the post office, I stood in line for almost 2 hours. They are extremely inefficient, and they charge too damn much, compared to what I can do with other sources, such as email, and if I need to send a signed document to someone, FEDEX works nicely.

So the USPS is losing lots of money? Easy way to rectify that. Cut the services to the bone, until it's level of services is commensurate with the public's interest in it's services. That's the way a free market works, and with changes in technology, businesses need to either adapt or go under receive billions in bailout money from the government that does absolutely nothing but drain our treasury. Here 'ya go, Mr. President - Another boondoggle for you to throw away my money on.

I love my post lady even though all I get is junk mail for the most part. I have one bill I write a check for and I don't even mail that check. I'd rather pay that bill online.

I think that the US Postal Service should be taken private. Surely it can be run much more efficiently than it is now. As it is now, that loud sucking sound we all hear is the millions of dollars swirling down the US Postal Service drain.

Some money-saving ideas might include such things as:

* running the postal service like a real business; shut the doors on weekends and open only during the week...say, 8am - 5pm or so.
* fire all the route carriers and offer to rehire them as bonded Independent Contractors...they can provide their own benefits (if they desire) at reduced cost if all the contractors then join as a co-op to increase their group buying power;
* combine residential and business mailboxes in a central area of a neighborhood, with drive-up access to the individual boxes. Route carriers would not have to run up and down every street to deliver mail to boxes (especially in housing areas with their own mailboxes in the front yard). This would save not only time, but fuel for mail carrier vehicles as well;

Hell, I don't know...I just hate to see the postal service in this condition. I live in a rather rural area, and I would not like to have to drive to the local post office to pick up my mail. Lots of folk do just that, but they do so by choice, usually; and they pay for the "right". My free mail delivery works fine for me, thank you very much.
