The last remaining Communist government in mainland Europe appears set to lose power after the ruling party in Moldova failed to gain a majority in parliamentary elections.
Amid frantic behind-the-scenes horse-trading, four West-leaning opposition parties which between them won more than 50 per cent of the vote said today that they intended to unite to form a government in the former Soviet republic.
If they carry out their promise, they will prevent the Communists from remaining in office - leaving the island of Cyprus as the last remaining European state with a Communist government.
“Democracy and truth has finally been victorious,” said Vlad Filat, leader of the Liberal Democrats.
