The Obama administration said Tuesday it is not ruling out the possibility of Russian membership in NATO.
Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon told U.S. lawmakers that the United States would consider Russian membership in the military alliance that was founded to protect Europe from Soviet aggression.
Gordon said NATO's doors should be open to democracies in Europe. He added that "if Russia meets the criteria and can contribute to common security, and there is a consensus in the alliance, it shouldn't be excluded."
NATO is often vilified in Russia, which has objected to the alliance's expansion to include countries on its border.
But the Obama administration is seeking better relations and says it wants to convince Moscow that NATO is no longer a threat.
US says Russia could join NATO - Hürriyet Daily News and Economic Review
The Obama administration is apparently "not ruling out the possibility of Russia joining NATO". I have to admit, im not of complete opposition to Obama and what he is doing, but this has to be the stupidiest thing an American administration has said for years. Russia has spent its entire modern existence controlling, fighting, and terrifying NATO and all that it stands for. And yet, the Obama administration "is not ruling out the possibility" of Russia joining its worst ever enemy; NATO. Are these people in fantasy land?
EDIT: Im stunned they consider Russia a Democracy also.
