Crowley himself, speaking to the Globe yesterday and again last night in Natick, said he will not apologize and asserted, “I am not a racist.’’

Crowley’s police union issued a statement saying it had reviewed the arrest of Gates and expressed “full and unqualified support’’ for his actions.

You know, when some white people are accused of being racist, they will say "I know a black guy" or "I have a black friend", which usually makes the situation worse. However, in this case, the police officer's actions over the course of a lifetime prove that he does not have a racist bone in his body. Not only did he grow up with black kids, some of whom are friends to this day, but he is also the officer who attempted to save the life of a Cambridge University basketball player who collapsed on the court, and later died. Are his actions that of a racist? Hell no. What we witnessed with this story was an act of race baiting by the college professor. Morale of this story? Black people can be racists too.

The professor was simply entering his own home when police descended on him. How did he "bait" them?

According to the police report, the professor did not identify himself at first, and began accusing the officer of racial profiling, although the reason the officer was at the home was because of a neighbor who had called the police.

Good. It's about damn time somebody stood up to these PC thugs. I'm sick of the "progressive" authoritarians who insist on bludgeoning the rest of society with their BS victim mentality.

So far all we have is the police officers side of the story, so it's odd that the professor is so quickly labeled the race baiter and troublemaker.

How many people here would be upset if the police came up to your door demanding ID?

Was an arrest really the best way to handle this?

This was a friend of Obama's, are you guys really saying you wouldn't take your friends side if the cops had arrested them in their own house?

Depends on the situation. If a cop were at my door, I would be following his lawful orders instead of calling him names.

I think all of this has been completely blown out of proportion. Gates should just let this rest.

According to the police report, the professor did not identify himself at first, and began accusing the officer of racial profiling, although the reason the officer was at the home was because of a neighbor who had called the police.

The professor did not immediately tell the cops he lived there? Shouldn't that have caused them to back off at least enough for a civil conversation, where they say something like "Oh, sorry, we got a call from a neighbor. If you could just show us some ID we'll be on our way." No, they continued to treat him like a crack dealer looking for the silverware.

Are you assuming again?

Why should he apologize? I'm not one to normally take the side of the cops, but I don't see how what they did was wrong. They had a report of a break in, they went to check it out. The individual whom answered the door was combative and didn't identify themselves as the homeowner. That's it.

Obama owes the police officer and his department an apology. period.

This is not about right or left, but right or wrong. In this case, Obama was wrong.

In your fantasy of the situation, sure. The evidence says otherwise.

Gates had just arrived home to his Cambridge house from a trip abroad to find his front door stuck shut. As he and the driver who brought him from the airport tried to push it open, a passerby called police with a report of a possible break-in. Crowley arrived and demanded that Gates, now inside, show him identification. Crowley’s police report said Gates behaved belligerently when he questioned him, which Gates denied. Authorities dropped the charge Tuesday after it ignited accusations of racism.

Call me stupid but where does race come into this?
I sure as heck hope my police would do the same, i'd just show them the ID and move on.

The gentleman screamed at the cops that the only reason they were questioning him was his blackness....

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Police Report - July 23, 2009

Obama made a comment that had he lost the keys to the white house or something, that "he would be shot"....

Classic American sharpton level race baiting. One would think our President would be above that.

Again, everyone here is assuming the police never make mistakes or go overboard.

I can only imagine if this had been your friend or relative arrested in their own home how the posts would be very different.

It's happened to me, I didn't scream that I was being oppressed, act all beligerent, or act like a crazyman.... after it was over, I thanked the cops for thier response and sent them on their way....

That's the whole point, if you don't act like a suspect, the majority of the police won't treat you like one. How hard is it really to take the police at their word that they are following up on a disturbance call and say "my neighbor is mistaken, here's my I.D. and we're all good here."?

Police arrested my friend, i helped them along and pointed out the door he was in. Better to abide by the rules than try and fight police.

If my relative turned a police question into an arrest or otherwise big deal I would laugh at them and let them marinate in jail for the night, same with my friends. A lawful order from a police officer is to be followed, and showing an I.D. would have ended it there, or even just stating he appreciated the neighbors concern but it in fact was his residence, or any variant of that.

I would have said "why didn't you just tell them who you were, you damn fool?"

Bull****. He was simply stating a fact.

Anyone not authorized to be on WH grounds can and would be shot.

Just last week a man was killed for getting too close.
Washington: Armed man shot, killed near Capitol - Topix

oh this was a serious retort on your part. are you suggesting he wasn't claiming his blackness would be a factor? Did you listen or read the whole exchange?

How you "True Believers" turn a blind eye to your guy, is astounding.

Indeed, the countless times i have been stopped and searched. You just explain, exchange pleasantries and move on. I wonder if i cried racism, how far i would get.
The bobbie would probably just laugh at me and walk on

Agree 100%. His implication was that he, the President, would have been shot because he was black. No question about it.

If you refuse to see that, ask yourself why.

He would be shot? Should a leader be wading into a issue below him?

Sad that some in US haven't moved on with racism. I'm sure there are racist cops in US as there is in every country but by crying 'racist' at everything, you demean the word and other people who actually do face genuine racism.
