BBC NEWS | Americas | Venezuela 'fuelling drugs trade'

Corruption in Venezuela's government and military is allowing drug trafficking into the US to flourish, a US congressional report has said.

Venezuela provides "a safe haven" for Colombian armed groups operating along its border, the report says.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has dismissed the report's findings, labelling it "a new lie" from the US.

The US says the annual flow of Colombian cocaine through Venezuela quadrupled between 2004 and 2007.

The report, by the Government Accountability Office, which is an arm of Congress, says corruption in Venezuela has extended a "lifeline" to Colombian rebels who profit through the drugs trade using sanctuaries along the border.

It's their plan to screw the United States' future by screwing the new generations of teenagers.

What actions do you think the U.S. should take to stem the flow of these drugs?

Produce its own drugs, and sell them on a lower price.

Chavez is looking for something to replace all that lost oil revenue.

I find it hilarious that he claims the U.S. is making-up false stories about drug movement. Oil has dropped, many private companies have pulled-out of the country due to government takeovers, so what do they have left, drugs!

Another reason, among many, to decriminalize drugs. ;)

"Oil has dropped, many private companies have pulled-out of the country due to government takeovers, so what do they have left, drugs! "

Fairly apt description of this country, now.

Drugs are a great problem. The last three Presidents of these United States have admitted to using illegal drugs. So how are we, The People, going to fight something that our very leaders are using? The "War on Drugs" is over. We lost.

Besides, most Americans just make fun of the use of drugs. but then most Americans are clueless.

I have pondered the question of legalizing drugs many times and must admit that I am torn. I see the uselessness of fighting the use of these drugs, and feel that if people are dumb enough to use the hard stuff, then they deserve to reap the effects. Howeverm I worry that to legalize all would indeed put youth at risk. Saying that drug abuse is alright by legalizing it, may indeed open children and teens up to influences that may not have otherwise have been. I understand that most will experiment with marijuana, but cocaine, heroine, and meth scare me to death. I suppose if parents were more involved in their childrens lives and cared to be responsible for them, there would not be as much to worry about. But in today's economy, both parents must work, if there are two parents, and the ability to oversee children effectively has been somewhat diminished. So, I am on the fence.

Though theres not really any proof that this is state policy than just being about corruption on a lower level. This kind of thing is pretty normal for Latin America though. For instance in the city were i volunteerd in Peru the police would routinely confiscate drugs and then resell them to the highest bidder.

As regards the war on drugs i personally think we should be more worried about the armed gangs themselves then what they,re selling. I think the violence they,re involved in is far more destructive.

Do we say that alcohol abuse is alright?

No, and I understand your point, but heroine and meth use cause rapid deterioration of the body. Also, alcohol production is strictly controlled, whereas anyone can produce meth in their home.

It would be Darwin doing some of his best work. ;)

Only thing fuelling the drugs trade is the appetite of the consumer. Blaming Chavez for the flow of drugs is more anti-Chavez BS crap from the American right.

Chavez is no angel, and I hate the guy, but for god sake when attacking him, attack him for something that actually is realistic and fair. It is just playing right into his hands when American right wingers go around claiming he is aiding the drug dealers....

Stop blaming other countries for our appetite for mind alteration is my first thought.

If demand exists, then supply will too, no matter how much crying we do about other countries not preventing us from getting supplied.
