Top scholar Gates arrested in Mass., claims racism

Not the way you came across. You sounded like you have a chip on your shoulder.

Perhaps I do. I'm not a big fan of cops because of what I've seen them do to my friends and family. I've always had a problem with authority because I've seen people abuse it a lot. I also believe that authority is an illusion. However, this doesn't mean that I go looking for trouble or that I try to elevate any situation. I've always gone out of my way to diffuse a situation. I'm just saying that I'm not going to kiss their ass or automatically respect them because they have a badge. I treat them the same as I would anyone else.

Another business opportunity for Rev Al Sharpton. Congrats, Al.

No they don't. "Police quotas", are an urban legend.

That aside, I think it's safe to say that anyone over the age of 25 can attest to the fact that if you're not breaking the law, the cops don't jack with you. That's been my experience, because everytime a cop jacked with me, it directly related to me being up to no good. It didn't take me long to observe a pattern.

I've never, ever seen a cop pick on someone that wasn't doing something wrong. Now, I've been questioned by a cop, because it, "looked", like I might be up to no good, but after I politely answered the officer's questions and did what he asked me to do, everything was ok. Just because you believe you're not doing anything wrong doesn't mean that you can ****-off on a cop and expect everything to be ok. It just doesn't work like that in the real world.

They do not call it quotas anymore in some areas. It is called goals. Or whatever the word is to make it seem as if it is NOT a quota.

I am not gonna turn this thread into some cop bash thread nor am I gonna jump all on the defend the cops bandwagon. I have known good and bad cops from all around and yep I have reason to bash cops but today is a happy day for my so not gonna be a down on cops day for me today.

I was responding to the rediculous notion that cops have to hassle "X" amount of people everyday.

Those situations are the exception, not the rule. In most of those cases, I'm betting that the subjects weren't being, "perfectly", polite, though.

The most impatient cops in the country, if not the world are New Orleans cops, during Mardi Gras. I've been to enough Mardi grass to know that if you play it cool with them, you won't get a knight stick in your grape. If you mouth off at them, they will leave you in the gudder, bleeding. It's just not that hard to figure out and when someone says, "that cop gave me a hard time", I just have to ask what that person did to bring that hard time on himself.

Wow.. What a nasty message about the cops in NOLA. I been there plenty of times and happen to know a few NOLA cops. NONE of the men and women NOLA cops I know would ever leave anybody in a gudder bleeding-as you put it.

What are you suggesting here? I mean are you really trying to suggest that if you are in NOLA and "mouth off" that you may find yourself bloody and in a ditch? Cause if that is what you are suggest8ng? You best check yourself and correct yourself right frigging now!

When you're dealing with a person, who can die everytime he makes a traffic stop, anyone that isn't smart enough to ramp down the emotion deserves what they get.

What? You gotta be kidding me?

And you are still assuming that I'm always trying to provoke something or elevate the situation.

That's the way you make it sound.

Ask your NOPD pards if what I'm saying is true, during Mardi Gras. "During Mardi Gras", is a key point, in case you missed it. The reason for that strategy, is that there are several hundred thousand people on Bourbon street during Mardi Gras and there's no way they can arrest everyone that commits a minor crime. If you know someone that does, or has worked in the 1st District, ask them how they handle trouble during Mardi Gras.

The damn fool refused to produce his ID and was belligerent because he's the racist. Simple case of stupid idiot gets to go to jail.

Did you read his post? It explained exactly why. :doh

I already knew it was because he's black. I just wanted to see if anyone had the goobers to answer. Guess we know, now.

That is total crap! Cops have something like quotas (aka as goals or whatever they are calling em now) that they need to fill and trust me on this they can and will screw with you.

One more thing. Cops cannot screw with you? You think all cops are clean? There are dirty cops and they are not very nice people.

Entirely not true.

Its a stupid liberal crybaby rumor created to justify in his/her own mind the reason why they got a ticket and not a warning on a traffic stop.

People should have never started giving out warnings.

I refuse to give out warnings anymore, screw that, even if I stopped for headlights out a night your getting a ticket for it.

Crybabies.

That's the way you make it sound.

Wow, I didn't realize that reading text could make it sound like anything. Perhaps you shouldn't jump to conclusions in the future. :2wave:

I love how Liberals think that just because they're peace loving Liberals they are some how entitled to be treated differently by cops than everyone else and the law some how don't apply to them.

Yeah, because it's just Liberals who think that they don't deserve to get tickets. Not all life can be divided into such simplistic terms as Libs vs. Cons. Try thinking outside of the box.

It sounds to me as if you have pride issues.

Pride gets you NOWHERE when dealing with police, just makes you look like a jack ass, especially if it is unnecessary.

Nah, it's not a pride issue. I just don't kiss anyone's ass because they believe they are somehow superior to me. I am polite to people until they are impolite to me. It's that simple. You can make any conclusions you want, but it changes nothing. I'm not a fan of people with big egos and there are plenty of cops out there who have them. There are also plenty of great cops out there who are nice people. Cops are human beings after all.

Perhaps, if the cops are being too mean to you; meaner than you think you deserve, you should stop and examine your behavoir, before criticizing there's.

I don't think cops are being too mean to me. I've seen certain cops be unnecessarily aggressive towards me and friends of mine in the past where it was completely unwarranted. Those cops are egotistical assholes. Are all cops this way? Absolutely not. As I said earlier, I've met plenty of cops who are great people. But I'm not going to kiss every cop's ass because they think they are somehow superior to me. If you want to suck up to a cop just because they are a cop even if they are being aggressive towards you in an unwarranted way then that's fine for you. I'm just not that way. Deal with it. :2wave:

"Sucking up" to cops is a good way to stay out of jail. Like it or not.

There've been cops who've treated me as a suspect when I was in the right. There've been several times I've wanted to slug a cop. My better judgment told me not to. Because disagreeing, arguing, screaming, kicking, or otherwise throwing a hissy fit towards a cop will get you only one thing... trouble.

I saw a short clip of the professor on tonight's news. He said the cop came into the situation with a 'predetermined point of view.' Well, there was at least one man in that home with a 'predetermined point of view,' and I'm not sure one of them was the cop.

:2wave:

I can't fault the cop here...But I can't fault Gates either, ultimately it was a bad situation. I think it's fair to be pissed off if you're being suspected of breaking into your own house, but ultimately the good professor could have simply made one snide remark and everyone would have went about their day. Yelling at a police officer for minutes on end when the officer is trying to leave is just dumb.

Your has been the most measured and adult reponse that I have read in this thread thus far. I had read and heard a few stories about this topic since last night and I would conclude that the professor badly over-acted to what appears to have been a police officer doing what he was supposed to do. My feeling is that the 'good' professor reacted as a steotypical Black man because he assumed that the police officer was a stereotypical White man.

The professor should appologize for over-reacting and be glad that the police responded to what could have been a home invasion.

Translation: "I didn't read his post." Glad we cleared that up.

Why is everything a partisan issue with you?

I fully realize that it could cause problems with me down the road, but I can't help how I feel. I'm not saying that I would disagree, argue, scream or kick. I'm just saying that I will be polite to them until they aren't polite to me. I'm not going to suck up to anyone. I don't care who they are.

You said that you're not a big fan of cops, because of the way you and your friends and family have been treated. If that's the case, then must examine your own behavior. If you don't want to be the adult in the situation and disrespect a cop, just because he's an unproffessional asshole, then you have only yourself to blame if you get a raw deal.
