Ethical storm flares as British scientists create artificial sperm

I'm going to form a lobbyist group to keep the pickle jar industry intact.

That's one of the problems I have with Medicaid (free government insurance for poor people in the states.)

Having a larger population isn't good on its own.
To argue that poor people shouldn't have more children marks you as an elitist, even though it is for humanitarian purposes.

Large populations of ignorant and unintelligent people leaves the door wide open for abuse. I can't support such a blind and ignorant policy.

People having greater access to preventive care, as facilitated to a limited degree by medicaid, is more a matter of saving society money in the long run. Government health insurance will continue to play that role until we are willing to let poor/old/unlucky/irresponsible people die in the ER. Having a healthier populace is also helpful for productivity.

I do see the way society allows more ignorant and unintelligent people to reproduce more, but to me that just indicates that democratic processes should not be relied upon to determine policy. Hence me making references to technocracy, but it would have to be based upon a better constitution than we currently have, and perhaps more technology that would enable us to more objectively assess intelligence and empathy in potential leaders.

There is a trend happening in UK and across Europe, i remember a lecture in sociology explaining how those in the higher bracket of wealth and education wise were having less children whereas those in the lower brackets were having many and my professor was speculating whether it would create a generation of children with lesser intelligence *shrugs*

That really depends on how strong the correlation between socioeconomic class and genetic predisposition to intelligence really are. There's a relatively strong correlation between socioeconomic class and expressed intelligence... but there's still plenty of room for that to be explained by disparities in education and childhood learning environment.

Then again, all of the smart poor people I know have fewer children than the dumb people I know. Scary thought.

To argue that poor people shouldn't have more children marks you as an elitist, even though it is for humanitarian purposes.

It only marks you as an elitist if you attempt to establish a connection between their poverty and other undesirable traits-- essentially, if you are claiming that the rich are rich and the poor are poor because they deserve to be so.

Large populations of ignorant and unintelligent people leaves the door wide open for abuse. I can't support such a blind and ignorant policy.

The largest portion of every human society has been ignorant and unintelligent. The only thing to change in recent years has been their increasing power to affect meaningful changes in their government-- a change brought about less by the endless expansion of franchise than by the use of information technology and political lobbying groups to give morons a greater voice in the political system.

Another thought would be that as society advances, it may not necessarily be the genetically blessed in physical strength that have the upperhand, but rather the mentally capable. Intelligence may very well be valued over the physically strong, and there is no reason to think that in the future natural selection may not change it's means.

Any change in the human genome that makes human extinction a viable consequence of the collapse of our technological base is undesirable. Especially when all it would take to render our technological society inviable is a particularly violent hiccup in the financial markets.

I agree that if we're looking toward human enhancement our goals should revolve mainly around mental improvement-- but we must not allow the physical capacity of our species to suffer in the process.

What? You'll be fed well enough, don't worry. We women aren't nearly as mean to our slaves as most men are.

Yes, but how do you treat the women slaves? ;)

Re: Ethical storm flares as British scientists create artificial sperm from human ste

Relax, men will always be needed
Men will not go extinct calm down and i doubt there will ever be a society where men do not play a key role in it
Well you'd better hurry, because the feminists are going extinct. They're just plain out of style.

As long as women are still being mistreated and seen as second class in the world, i hope feminists still exist

In a way it is. Now they're more equal in the employment sphere, but without relinquishing much responsibility for the domestic sphere. Sounds stressful. And even us guys who sympathize have trouble alleviating that, as we weren't really trained for most of the domestic sphere. So it requires the girls to have a lot of patience with us, and sometimes they'd rather just do it themselves instead of explain it, even though that hurts them in the long-run... topic drift...

What in heavens name are you talking about?
I lost you at the fourth sentence.

Many guys don't know how to do housework, and not all girls are patient enough to teach them. The culture of not teaching most young boys how to do housework did not change right away, and many women do a disproportionate amount of work because of it.

Damn straight they do.
It's a woman's job to raise the child, hence why she should also look after the housework while she's at home raising him.
I am all in for women having their own careers and such, but if a woman has a child to take care of, she should stay at home and raise him properly.
There's nothing wrong or chauvinistic in pointing out that a child needs to be raised by his mother.

You can have a family and a career as well.

Artificial sperm?

Well, if that isn't a slap in he face to all of us who have dedicated our lives to producing the real stuff.

Re: Ethical storm flares as British scientists create artificial sperm from human ste

Depends on the career really.
Let's see you trying to manage both successfully.

gives whole new meaning to "money shot"

Huh? Why does he need to be raised by his mother? Do children raised by single-fathers spontaneously combust? :)

If both parents work equally, they should be trying to share home responsibilities equally, or else it's not fair.

If my Mom could hold down a job and having 7 children.

I can handle ANY career and a family.

I'm not so sure the father can breed the child, he has a lack of milk in his boobs.
A mother's love is also needed more than a father's love, however unfortunate that it is.
The father is the source to pride and values, while the mother is the one who raises you and takes care of you.
That's just how it works, it's something biological I think.

What did she do(work), and how did she manage to take care of all 7 children while working?

Well you're talking about a very specific and somewhat short timeframe, and incidentally in other countries they have leave for that. Not all women can or do breastfeed anyway, but there is evidence that it is healthier.

I don't know what you mean by a mother's love is more or less needed. Do you have a study that shows children of single mothers do better than those of single fathers. IIRC, income has more to do with well-being than the parents' gender, though the studies I saw a long time ago were looking at income versus single parent status.
