Scores killed in China protests

There was a clash between the Uigher population, which are Muslim and the migrant Hun Chinese a few months back over an alledge rape of a Muslim girl.

Tlmorg02,

Actually, the rumors concerned the possible raping of two women by Uighurs. From Reuters:

Police say Sunday's clashes were triggered by a brawl between Uighurs and Han at a factory in south China prompted by a rumor Uighurs had raped two women.

Frankly I don't think anyone is surprised by the results of these protests. The PLA, police or whatever responded per their MO.

Hi everyone,

As I said in my going away message, I was headed to Xinjiang where this happened. I just exited. Fortunately I was not in Urumqi when this happened, or even in Kashgar where some unrest spread.

There are a few contacts I made there and they all are very worried. The protest started as a peaceful demonstration but those are not allowed. When people were arrested, family members joined the scores in order demand the return of their arrested relatives. Then things spiraled.

The Han Chinese have been steadily invading this region economically and culturally. You walk through the old towns and they all have 拆 spraypainted on the old buildings, meaning "demolish". The Han are systemically destroying all of the Uighur towns and replacing them with ghettos or wealthy living quarters for the Han. Many people have had family members go missing, never returned. Uighur business is being forced out and replaced with Han business. The government is indeed up to very dirty business.

I am now in a Tibetan village where the tensions are similar. Before the olympics, they imposed 8pm curfews on the towns. Everyone had to turn off their electricity and be in their homes. At 8pm sharp, military vehicles would roll in and inspect every home. Imagine this is your daily life, where tourism of a foreign culture is forced upon your ancestral home that smashes your old buildings and replaces them with foreign architecture; imagine being at your place of worship and there are government loud speakers blasting propaganda while you pray (like in Lhasa), in order to silence your way of life; imagine your son or daughter is dragged away because all they are demonstrating for is the right to peacefully live out their traditions as their forefathers did, and you never see them again; imagine the new conquerers then marching in and proclaiming that they are the civilizing force, bringing prosperity to your "barbaric" existence; imagine railways being built through your lands to enable more invaders, demolishing your villages, mosques, and monasteries along the way. We saw this in the West when the European Imperialists raped and pillaged countries with this same tactic, spreading lies and misinformation to their own people. It is modern imperialism at its finest.

The Chinese government has no guilt about this. They feel they are entitled to do what they want, and every single nation on Earth is enabling their evil, corrupt, murdering behavior. I heard plenty about the injustices here, but to see them with my own eyes and hear about them from the locals makes my blood boil.

The best thing you can do is write to your congressman, a gift that is granted to us by our free societies and one that few people EVER use, and tell them to demand that congress stop supporting Chinese economy and issue sanctions. It is the only way. While we in the West are enjoying the luxuries of cheap imports, cultures that are thousands of years old (i.e. the Tibetans who are 6000 years old), are being erased and taken away into the night. WRITE to your government, it is their job to hear you. You have no idea how lucky you are to be able to protest and demand action.

I am so angry right now.

I forgot to add, the reason for the original demonstration was that there was an incident a week ago at a factory between Han Chinese and Uighurs that turned violent. I don't know the specifics yet but will soon. The demonstrators took to the street to demand that the government address tensions between the two ethnic groups.

Also, it is important to note that when the Uighur protest started, Han Chinese people living in the cities also took to the streets with weapons to attack the protestors, but their government will never mention that.

Xinjiang is essentially another country. It is ethnically closer to the Middle East (like the other -stans of the former Soviet Bloc) than it is to Asiatic China, but the Communists seized control of it after their rise, along with Tibet.

It is an annexed nation faced with the premise of gradual cultural genocide.

I am will sorry but what you said is totally oppsite. I don't know where you got this information or what is your purpose? no Muslim girl involved in this issue. it's rumor of rape of two han girls caused confilict between han and Uigher.

Thanks Allen, I did indeed have it backwards, apologies.

Orius,

I thank you for your wonderfully revealing posts. There are very few on this forum that post on China, and it is the area of my graduate studies. I have known for a while now, how the Beijing government is tearing down the old cultures of China and replacing it with their likeness. It has been happening in Tibet for a few decades now, and I am deeply saddened to learn the same is befalling the Uighers. I have written my Senators many times on the failure of the U.S. government to call China on it's human rights abuses and tyrannical government. I found it very ironic that a government that supports China, spokeout against Iran for human rights violations and corruption. Please, share as much as possible with this forum, or PM me personally if you will. Again, thanks for sharing your experience.

Sounds like the Han Chinese are engaging in a long term, methodical process of ethnic cleansing in the region.

You are quite right. The same has been so also in Tibet, as the Tibetans more closely resemble Indians than Chinese, culturally and ethnically. China has long held the fear, that if Tibet were to gain independence, then it would ally with India and allow the Indians to build bases in Tibet, thus nullifying China's biggest defense against India, the Himalayan Mountains. Beijing is constantly consolidating power, and this ethnic cleansing is their way of shoring-up the borders.

Our governments - and I include Canada in my assessment - are all hypocritical liars. They only care about freedom and liberity for their OWN people, and it is still tightly controlled. Our governments talk big about human rights around the world, but they are enablers for some of the most brutal regimes. All they care about is economy and making money, getting cheap imports for the corporations (which, by the way, they then charge US ten fold for to make obscene profits), and then turn around and make petty, useless condemnations of humans rights in China.

Our governments are just as guilty for what happened in Xinjiang as the Chinese government itself is. Our purchases are funding their genocide, and our governments don't give a ****.

Wasn't it Clinton who gave them most favored nation status?

I try to look at this from another angle, and hope that the economic trade will eventually lead to a softening of the Chinese government and eventually lead to a democratic movement. Realistically speaking, I feel that the integration of China into the world market has only led to feeding a waking monster, that is on course to take global dominance. Trying to make bigger profits has only worked against this country in the end.

China still does not have most favored nation status, due to their refusal to adjust the yuan (RMB) and their blocking and high tariffs placed on American goods. This is why our trade deficit is so high. They allow virtually no U.S. goods in and we allow all Chinese goods to be imported in our country. If they would drop these barriers, they would then indeed recieve most favored nation.

According to [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Most_Favored_Nation]Most favoured nation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] China has this status.

I just looked it up on a few other sites and you are right, that ****ing idiot Clinton indeed gave China MFN! I thought it was allowed to expire in 1998, after China was caught stealing and selling U.S. military secrets. But according to the CATO center, Clinton renewed it in 2000. That really pisses me off, as China engages in seriously one-sided trade with the U.S.

If by "Han Chinese" you mean "the Chinese government," you would be correct.
