Switchblade law opponents cut in Hill fight - Washington Times

Opponents of the Obama administration's plan to expand the definition of "switchblades" and block the importing of many common pocketknives suffered an early setback in Congress this week, but they vow the Capitol Hill knife fight isn't over.

The new knife rules proposed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) would affect the interpretation of the Switchblade Knife Act of 1958 to include any spring-assisted or one-handed-opening knife.

The bipartisan Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, boasting one of the largest memberships on Capitol Hill, sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who oversees CBP, urging her to quash the proposed rule change. The letter was signed by 61 Republican and 18 Democratic lawmakers.

In much the same way that gun rights issues have cut across the partisan divide in Congress, the threat of a knife grab by the government has especially rankled members from western and southern states, regardless of their party.

These jackasses don't have anything better to do other than ban some knives on federal lands.

You can keep your shotguns just not some kinds of knives that can be loosely interpreted to be any knife.

Stop knives but allow guns which can do more damage? Huh ....

A Framing Hammer is more dangerous than any knife.

Anyone supporting this law is a complete dullard.

Consult the list of legislators who vote for it, and vote accordingly.

Also might be smart to send a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who oversees CBP, but then if she were smart enough to read, she probably wouldn't be wasting national legislative time on any of this.

That is absurd. Pretty much any folding knife can be opened one handed, including perfectly harmless tools like a leatherman or swiss army knife. What the hell are these morons thinking?

They aren't?

Depends on the gun, depends on the knife, depends on the person.

In the hands of someone who knows how to use it, a knife is a most horrible way to die. A gun at least has the virtue of being a reasonably quick demise.

But you don't support this law, right?

Hell no.

If I have a gun in my shooting hand, I like having a knife in the other for when I run out of bullets.

(Stupidity is not having a backup plan!)

I think any ban on arms violates the 2nd amendment.

Well, there is lots of knife violence in Europe...

Maybe they're planning for something?

</tinfoil hat>

This is so idiotic, it is beyond my capacity to express my contempt in terms permissible outside of the Basement.

Eh. We have the right to bear arms, not the right to use any weapon we please. You want psychopaths to get a hold of nuclear weapons?

Its the old nuke argument again for supporting the restriction 2nd amendment rights, except this it is in a thread discussion about knives. I know lets severely restrict the 1st amendment because someone can use their speech for treason. We should make them get licenses, take classes, and outlaw certain types of speech. I heard the "what about nukes" argument many times, you will not win me over with that arguement. Because it is my belief that one of the reasons for the 2nd amendment is so the people can one day overthrow the government in the event the government becomes corrupt or oppressive. That means the people should be allowed to have what ever the military has, that means light and heavy machine guns, grenades, grenade launchers, missile launchers, tanks, jets and so on as long as that person can afford those things (assuming those things are not artificially above market price due to restrictions and bans).

But...I have a switchblade...I have for years...use it every day....

for?
the most common use for a knife in my house is for spreading butter....or jam, on my toast.

It's not "in my house", it's in my tool belt, and I use to...get ready....cut things.

It's just a tool. A folder fits in my pocket, and the spring is for one-handed use.

OH... My... GOD.. you actually CUT THINGS?! YOU'RE A BARBARIAN!!!

I carry a Strider SNF in my pocket with me everyday... it's very big, and it's pretty intimidating to most. I use it to.. *gasp* cut stuff too.

My girlfriend had the same kind of dumb questions as utahbill.. I guess it's more of the liberal think that knives cannot be tools.. they're solely weapons with no purpose but to maim and kill.

They should propagandize switchblades as "assault knives" or some other nonsense... at least then it'd be semi-funny.

I carried a pocket knife on the job, but I don't work anymore. What I find more useful these days is a short stubby scissors. I can carry it in my back pocket without damaging my pants, and it is very handy for opening bags of chili cheese fritos...:2razz:

I have box-cutters with diferent shaped blades (roofers and tiners know why), tin snips, all manner of saws and drills....nail guns...I usually have a molti-tool on me rather or not I'm working (damn good thing to have handy).

They should propagandize switchblades as "assault knives" or some other nonsense... at least then it'd be semi-funny.

Now that my friend is good stuff.

you are assuming facts not in evidence....simply asking why one carries a knife is not a dumb question. I will excuse your jumping to conclusions, tho, because of where you live. :2razz: (I used to live in Peoria, AZ )

There are some who carry big knives hanging on their belt for some kind of macho manly BS, believe it or don't.:2wave:

Given your track record on gun rights.. and liberal leanings.. I'm willing to bet on my conclusion over the false pretense you're putting up. :2wave:

The macho man bs is applied to many other things too... vehicles, clothes, accessories, etc..etc. Sure hope you don't drive a huge truck, or suv.
