BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | China gets tough with North Korea

"The Chinese used to think that Kim Jong-il was just playing nuclear poker with the Americans, South Korea and Japan," he said.

"But now they think he really does want a nuclear arsenal."

Mr Lam believes Mr Kim is trying to develop these weapons to secure the succession of his third son, Kim Jong-un.

China's position towards North Korea noticeably changed after the North carried out a nuclear test at the end of May.

This seemed to end any hope that the six-party talks - aimed at stopping North Korea's nuclear programmes - would succeed.

Not only did this make the region more volatile, it was also embarrassing for China.

So it appears that even China is becoming truly fed-up with it's crazy neighbor. Thoughts?

Well if anyone has been following any the posted I have been making about this subject would have know this isn't news when they said they(NK) were going to launch the China and Russia both moved Military Assest closer to the North Korean Border.

I read your posts and indeed knew about the border build-up, but China had not at that point gave such strong responses. China is normally very careful in it's critique of NK, but even as they support the sanctions, they are still providing much food and oil to NK. The biggest fear that China and Russia have, is that all hell will break loose and North Koreans will flood into their countries, which they will avoid at all costs, hence the border build-up. This last statement by the Chinese was due to the embarassment it felt over the failure of the six-party talks, and China takes such things very seriously. All in all, it is our best interests to allow China to rein NK in anyway.

North Korea is a political tool of China to take the pressure off of its image. People are less focused on China's misdeeds when they're more focused on North Korea's. Now NK is embarrassing China, and embarrassment is the #1 thing that Chinese people wish to avoid. It is the foundation of their entire social framework, and where their desire to constantly save face comes from. It is rooted all the way up the hierarchy and into government.

I think that maybe China and to some degree the Russian Federatzia are thinking that maybe they created and/or encouraged a monster. A small monster but anyway a monster.

there needs to be reunification of Korea like east/west germany. Its a matter of who pays to bring the north up to par with the south.

Sure but before unification there needs to be one tremendous amoount of re-education, house cleaning, and a whole lot of North Korean officials sent to prison for a long long time. It would be uch better if som parties could foster a revolution in the north ans clean house that way. There are times when a good blood bath is the only solution to a nasty poble. And we all know that communism is one naty problem.
