Kansas Teacher Claims Conservative Views Led to Loss of Job - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News - FOXNews.com

Tim Latham, who has spent the last 19 years teaching students American history and government, spent the past school year at a high school in Lawrence, Kan. — and it appears his first year at the school will be his last.

Latham claims it has nothing to do with his abilities as a teacher and everything to do with his conservative politics.

Yep another sign of Hope and Change brought to you by the fine folks from the Left.

It's to bad. His polotics sound like they had little to do with his teaching.

I don't understand how the school can dump what sounds like a good teacher based on his political leanings?

This all makes the assumption that the teacher is being honest and correct. If he is, then the firing was wrong, but I am going to bet there is more to the story that what this article mentions.

I'll have to see what the school's side of the story is in this before I'll take this guy's word as gospel. I honestly don't think that personal politics belong in the classroom, regardless of your political leaning, but that's just me.

Well damn, I guess because he claims it, it MUST be true right?

I love how conservatives say "Wait wait, there are two sides to the Miss California Pageant, don't just to conclusions that she missed the events", but here they say the teacher is automatically telling the truth and it is the school's fault.

****ing hypocrites again.

An interesting headline but there is likely more to this story. I too would like to hear the schools side. I work in a school and am a known conservative who eschews the union. I take some good natured ribbing but that is about the extent of it. Politics is more or less left at the door. I'm guessing there is an issue of insubordination at the root of this termination.

Way to go off Topic typical Left change the subject or re-direct, I guess you missed the part about him being ask about the McCain-Palin bumper sticker.

So I guess that I should fire the six folks who work for me because they all have Obama Bumper Sticker correct. Or does the 1st Adm only apply to you fine folks on the Left.

Again, you don't know about his performenace, you don't know his record and you automatically jump to conclusions.

Way to go following hypocrisy.

You are assuming that he's telling the complete truth about the bumper sticker. Wouldn't you be interested to see what the other side of the story is with this issue or do you just automatically take this guy at his word? Personally, I'm a bit more skeptical and it has absolutely zero to do with his political views. I would feel the same way about a liberal teacher.

Way to not answer my question, I guess you must not have read the article.

Yes, I read the article, YES, you don't know both sides. Yet you are automatically taking the side of the teacher. Yes, the right is a bunch of hypocrites when they tell the left to listen to both sides, but then don't follow through with it themselves.

And what the hell does this have to do with Obama?

You know your comment, hope, change, etc bull****? Obama isn't the school.

From the artical, this guy reads like far-right. He was really bringing his political beliefs to work with him. Just teach history, ya jerk. The election of the first black president is history, even if you don't agree with his politics.

Latham — who was criticized for not airing President Obama's inaugural address during an American history class — says he first realized during a meeting last September with Assistant Principal Jan Gentry that his personal political views weren't making the grade with the rest of the faculty at the 2,000-student Lawrence High School.

It doesn't sound like he wasn't making the grade, it sounds like he was being a partisan shill in class. Why would you not air the inaugural address in class? What a perfect opportunity to allow the students to discuss what the President says verses what his actions are. Also seems like it could have been a little bigoted.

I don't understand people who said: I refused to watch the inaugural. John McCain and President Bush had the intelligence and class to acknowledge the historical significance of the election. There is a time for partisanship and a time to just be American.

The right is always complaining about college profs 'indoctrinating' students into the left; apparently they are trying to beat the left to the punch and get them in high school.

I couldn't tell you whether my H.S. History/Poli Sci teachers where liberal or conservative because they did their jobs correctly and without bringing their own beliefs into the classroom. Teach kids how to think, not what to think.

"Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach at my school." (this quote mostly refers to the creative arts--I have to say that so my wife the teacher won't yell at me.)

But this clown is not talented enough to get a radio show or a TV show, so he decides get a teaching credential instead. Why not, it's a paycheck, right?

What a jerk.

Way to not answer my question, I guess you must not have read the article.

You were not in the classroom. You were not in the school. You have absolutely no idea why he was fired aside from what you read in this article.

I see nothing surprising here. The writing on the wall since the contract with America made such a positive impact on the nation and put Conservatism back on the front burned and made the Republicans the majority party in the 104th congress while Bill Clinton was in the middle of his first term.
From that day forward plans to take control back by the left have become more and more pernicious and the frustrations they suffered have lead to blind rage in many cases that have made common sense and rational thought in the direction of what is best for the Country and our Citizens secondary to victory at any cost.
The election of Barack Obama has emboldened them and replaced the blind rage with blind obedience to follow a false prophet or Messiah. I must admit that some of the fasle promises of things like reduced taxes for 95% of Americans sounded great. However most of those of us who were not in a mind preset to believe everything we hear that sounds good saw the false promises.
This teacher has been caught up in a major push to cement the liberal agenda in positions in all walks of life that will allow them to begin to indoctrinate young people in "leftest fundamentalism". If you're not familiar with the term it's because it's being seen here for the first time. It refers to the basic "the good of the many outweigh the good of the few" as long as it steeped in the tradition of "From each, according to his ability; to each, according to his need” always cloaked in American sounding slogans in order to hide the truth. Most who fall into this are unaware they are being manipulated. As time goes on and this movement goes unchecked fewer and fewer stories will surface as the major media are part of the problem and people like this teacher are becoming an extremely rare commodity in all schools especially in journalism.
I don't expect you to take this at face value just think about this.
Spreading the wealth for example will not work in the long run because when there in no one higher up the ladder, there is no one up there to reach down and help any one else move up.
Action and thought are needed more now than ever and if it goes unchecked well the result will be the downfall of the Nation and Obama will get his wish, "America is the greatest nation ever and with your help we can change it".

A guy from Kansas says he got fired because of his political beliefs in what is probably a more conservative state then Texas? Didn't McCain win Kansas by something like 65%?

Best laugh I have had in days. Thank you for that.

Well, from the article, it sounds like the school is wrong. But it also states in the article that the various persons in charge made no comment, so who knows?

I found the link to his school website is interesting.

Could you post the link?

I'd have to see what the school says about it first. It's not like it's unheard of for a teacher to let his politics influence his teaching in areas like evolution and sex education. Not saying that's what happened, but it has been known to happen.

I dont know. Whole class days have been dedicated to obamamania around here in the elementary level. I cant speak to the middle or high school levels.

I would not mind the voting procedures being taught but when the teacher is covered in candidate buttons thats just over the line.

From the article,

Chloe Mercer, who graduated Lawrence High School last month, said Latham's class was her favorite and said he was fair despite his decision not to show Obama's inauguration in class.

"He chose not to show it, but he printed out Obama's speech and we read it and discussed what we felt was good about it," Mercer told FOXNews.com. "[Latham] was fair. He listened to all sides of every issue. He actually made print-outs of every candidate and how they felt on certain hot-button issues."

Latham defended his decision not to show Obama's inauguration because he'd opted not to show any similar events.

"I've never shown an inauguration," he said. "I never showed any of Bush's; I wouldn't have shown McCain's. I was not showing any bias towards Obama ... I didn't intend to interrupt the class."

So you want to retrack you statement huh I know many schools that didn't broadcast the inauguration, since when was that a school's requirement huh.

Yet another excuse to incite partisan bitchfests...

There are no facts here yet, only some accusations. It is important to learn the difference between the two.
