Photo Fight: Lieberman and Graham Threaten Senate Shutdown

The Democratic aide I spoke with assured me that Lieberman and Graham "are not going to go quietly into the night" on this because failure to do so would "clearly put the troops in danger." This source added that if Pelosi has cut a deal with liberal members of her caucus, she is "defying the White House, and defying the commanders on the ground."
Lieberman:
If this amendment is dropped, Senator Graham and I will not go quietly into the night. And we will not do so because the safety of our troops and our nation of the American people is on the line. We will use all of the legislative tools at our disposal to see to it that this amendment prohibiting the release of these photographs of detainees will be adopted.
Graham:
The only body that is off-script, in my opinion, is the House. If they drop this in conference, it will be one of the most outrageous and irresponsible acts in the history of the Congress.
Nancy Pelosi needs to get her head out of her ass. Would be a good thing if folks let their Representative know that Lieberman and Graham are correct and that Pelosi needs to have her ears pinned back.

Even if the photo release were justice, no justice is worth paying with the lives the American soldiers.

Pelosi is one sick woman. Why not start a movement in Congress to have her psych evaluated/ I believe she would be put in a nice home to live out her remaining days.

Pah....drop her bony ass in Bagram with the terrorists she loves so well.

If the photos are THAT BAD, then maybe the dumbasses shouldn't have OKed such treatment in the first place.

Funny that you left this part out though:

This aide also said that Liberman and Graham "are going to attach [the amendment] to every piece of legislation that comes down the pike." And indeed as Lieberman said at the press conference this morning, "we already actually added our original legislation as an amendment to the FDA regulation of tobacco bill that's on the floor right now."

So basically Lieberman and Graham are acting like spoiled brats and will attach this stupid amendment to everything (even though it is unrelated).

That's right folks, they are attaching this Photo Bill to a bill for FDA regulation of Tobacco. How is that not deceitful?

I thought conservatives were against deceit such as this? I guess not.

You overlook the fact that the folks placed in jeopardy are American troops--regardless of your particular spin on the photos themselves, there is no argument to be made that they "OK'd" anything. Publication needlessly endangers American soldiers--reason enough not to publish.

This is one time when I am one hundred percent support of politicians in any party acting like spoiled brats. I hope they keep acting like spoiled brats in this matter. What you fecklessly dismiss as a temper tantrum is doing more to preserve American soldiers lives than these despicable and desecratory witch hunts looking for yet more people to hate.

That's right folks, they are attaching this Photo Bill to a bill for FDA regulation of Tobacco. How is that not deceitful?

I am in favor of not putting American soldiers' lives needlessly at risk. I am especially in favor of not putting American soldiers' lives at risk just to gratify some lunatic liberal's voyeuristic fetishes.

You call it deceit. I call it exigent circumstance.

Then I guess you should be complaining about the treatment then. Because without that treatment, there would have been no photos to put the soldiers lives in danger. Once again, the people in the U.S. government that did the treatment are the ones putting the lives of U.S. soldiers at risk by doing the treatment.

It's not deceit if they have announced that they are doing it beforehand. Wanna try again or is this just a histrionic smear of two politicians you just don't agree with?

It is deceit when a bill is supposed to be about something and spoiled brats try to put in an UNRELATED bill because they can't get their way.

Not if they have announced it beforehand. I don't see how it's deceit if they tell the truth. Might be a little stubborn, but it isn't deceit.

I'm starting to like Leiberman more and more.

It's funny how during the Bush era conservatives called it deceit when Dems put in unrelated stuff to bills even when announcing it, but now that Lieberman and his pet dog are doing it, you agree with it.

Unless you are arguing the treatment is ongoing, this argument is a red herring.

If the treatment is ongoing then these items are properly considered evidence for the prosecution, because these treatments are most decidedly at odds with Dear Leader's own stated policies. I despise Dear Leader, but I do acknowledge that he is for now the military's Commander-in-Chief, however artlessly he discharges that duty. As his policies forbade the treatments of which you are so pontifically indignant, the proper process should be investigation, indictment, and prosecution.

In either circumstance, releasing these photos to the public unequivocally places American troops in harm's way, and is not something that needs doing, now or ever. Lunatic leftist voyeurism does not trump the lives of American soldiers.

The fact that people know these photos exist ALREADY put soldiers in harms way because people put their own spin on what's in the pictures.

It's amazing that some do not already realize this fact.

You aren't talking to all conservatives. You are speaking to me. If I made such a claim ever in the history of posting on this forum, please point me to it because I can't for the life of me remember having said anything of the sort.

Now, back to the topic at hand. It's not deceit if they announce it beforehand. Stubborn, yes, but far from deceitful. I like Leiberman more and more every day.

I hear this quite a bit, and I'd like to ask what should be a very easy to answer series of questions. How do you actually know this will cost the lives of American soldiers? Can they be trying any harder to kill us than they already are? Or are we very close to winning them over and this could reignite hostility against us? Or is the argument that these photos will drive up til now peaceful Muslims to kill Americans? What information do you have that substantiates that these photos will actually increase the operational level of violence against our troops?

I have to go with jallman on this. Far from being deceitful about it, they are announcing well in advance their intentions. They want everyone to know what they are doing because this issue is that important to them. While I may or may not agree with their tactics, there's no hiding what they are doing.

Generals Petreaus (sp?) and Odierno have indicated this, and are supported in that assertion by Secretary of Defense Gates. Dear Leader accepts their assertion.

I do not have primary empirical data to challenge their assertion, but, in view of the potential consequences (soldiers' lives at risk), I am prepared to take their assertion at face value. The generals especially have no dog in the political fight.

As for the "how"....as violence had been on the decline in Iraq last year, and only recently began to creep upward, there is considerable room for an increase in hostilities within Iraq, should the insurgents there be sufficiently motivated.

What good reason do you believe exists for publishing these photos that on balance is worth endangering American service personnel in a war zone?

There is indeed danger attached to the awareness of the photos.

There is more danger attached to the publication of the photos themselves.

We cannot eliminate the danger of awareness, but that has no bearing on the danger attached to the publication, which can be eliminated by not publishing.

Someone should be sued for what they did to that forehead. Those eyebrows can't go any higher.
Somebody should have informed her that botulinum toxin is meant to be a biological weapon, not a daily cosmetic ritual.

They could, but if she has one more facelift her cooter's gonna be on her chin.
