A US "taster" tested the food being dished up to President Barack Obama at a dinner in a French restaurant, a waiter said on Sunday.
"They have someone who tastes the dishes," said waiter Gabriel de Carvalho from the "La Fontaine de Mars" restaurant where Obama and his family turned up for dinner on Saturday night.

"It wasn't very pleasant for the cooks at first, but the person was very nice and was relaxed, so it all went well," he said on the Itele news channel.

Can we please get a SNL Skit on this? Bush Sr. got a load of crap for not liking broccoli, but his Highness get's a food "taster" and no one laughs at him?

Seriously?

I am trying to figure out why any one cares about either.

I thought it was funny as hell, his highness is too good to taste teh food himself. LOL

1) I don't understand why conservatives always refer to the President as "His Highness" when they don't even like him. Also, isn't this a democracy and not a monarchy?

2) Do we even understand the reasoning behind this? I mean, considering someone tried to assassinate George W. Bush in Russia, you would assume people would be more understanding towards the President potentially trying to defend himself.

what i dont understand is how some do not get sarcasm on the internet. sometimes it is too subtle, but not htis example

The President has had a food taster for quite some time.

Having one taste your food for you is something reserved for royalty...

What?

Alan Tart: The Presidential taste tester from Milton

MILTON – In olden days, royalty had what they called food tasters, a seemingly thankless and terrible job whereby someone would taste the lord's food – at considerable personal risk – to stave off the very real threat of poisoning.

Though the availability of poison has not have changed, the methods by which it is detected certainly have. And that's where Councilman Alan Tart comes in.

No, he not really the president's food taster. But close.

Tart, a regional retail food specialist with the FDA since 1999, is part of a specialized, 15-member team that steps in during "high security" events or disasters. It has been called upon for the G-8 summit, hurricanes Katrina, Gustav and Rita, the Republican and Democratic national conventions and Sept. 11.

Tart said the Secret Service and FBI will contact the FDA and request the team if they believe food security may be an issue. The official inauguration of the President of the United States of America Jan. 20 fall into that category.

"Food defense has been a major issue for us," said Tart, who will leave Jan. 15 and return a week later. "It has been identified as a major weakness in our fight against terrorism."

this president or all presidents
if all presidents, since when?
ty in advance for an interesting piece of trivia

Not only that, but there is unbelievable scrutinizing when it comes to the preparation of Presidential meals.

Food experts, employed by the Secret Service, dress in civilian clothing and travel throughout the United States to purchase groceries.

Buckingham Palace... French Restaurant...

BP it fits in ;)

So location is the driving force? If Obama had a food taster in England you wouldn't have started the thread about his "Highness"? It's not that he had a food taster but that he had a food taster at this specific location?

What makes English food more accepting of a food taster then French?

I think consuming food to insure that it is not poisoned, wondering if every bite will be your last, would be low on my desired job list.

It's part of redundant measures taken. Have you ever heard of a Presidential food taster dying from performing his job?

Apparently YOUR sarcasm-detector is off. I'm satirizing the point that conservatives are the only one who call Obama "His Highness" when they're trying to paint the picture that liberals are Obama's lapdogs and follow his every command as if they're scripture. It's really a joke that they criticize the people who agree with whatever he does when the people who agree with whatever he does are usually not the ones who are involved in politics. That's very different from the case where people listen to Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or Bill O'Reilley and believe they have some better grasp on politics than another person just because they have louder yelling abilities.

What?

Eh? Maybe we're thinking on different pages (who woulda thunk it?) but food-tasters are generally reserved for making sure food isn't poisoned which is what I outlined in point 2 that you quoted.

I wonder the type of people who apply for or get the job as a professional food taster. You are basically the parakeet (is that the right bird?) that the miners would use to see if there was a gas leak in the mines, or the birds they carried in the Gulf War and the opening days of Iraqi Freedom to be the first line of defense against a chemical attack.

I wonder what they tell their family and friends about this job. I would place a decent wager that they hype it up and make it seem a lot more prestigious than it is. Although that applies for just about anyone describing any job.

This is silly. From what I've seen, Presidents have had food tasters since GHWB...and probably longer than that.

witless sarcasm barely qualifies as sarcasm... It's, as the french would say, merd...
