"US violated Geneva Conventions" - Gen Petraeus

Apparently Petraeus is smart enough to see through the bull**** obfuscation that was the "legal argument" the Bush administration used to justify torturing our captives.

I'm not justifying anything. I'm asking you a simple god-damned question, one which you seem pathologically incapable of answering. Let's try again...

How can one violate the Geneva Conventions when the Geneva Conventions don't apply to the people in question?

Would you feel that way if they were torturing our people? Or are you being all puffed up because we are the assholes.

That begs to question, What would the left be doing?

The left thinks it is wrong when we are doing it to them. Many of the right seem to think it is just fine to torture. So the question stands as is.

Maybe if the Nazi troops and generals had the balls to speak up instead of following half assed leaders a few less Jews would have been killed. Hmmmm did you think of that.

Nazis? LOL.

How would you feel if our troops and generals started speaking out against Obama's administration? Would that be just, or would that be wrong?

IMO, it's not the military's place to make or interpret policy. The military works for the civilian leadership and carries out all lawful orders they are given. They are not the 4th branch of government

You just won't answer the question because you know you would be the first standing up bitching that it was wrong.

Why not just answer the question and see where it goes?

Petraeus seem to think we did violate the convention. I would go with his expertise before I would think you were correct. I tend to side that he is correct. so would you be pissed if they were torturing US civilians in the name of the war on terror?

No, I am ignoring the question because it does not answer the question I posed initially. I ask a question, you give an answer. Try it sometime...

I think that he has lied about his Iraq policy. I have no problem with them calling him out on bull**** that is being done worng.

So, rather than think for yourself, you simply differ to an authority figure?

When did you get to be Petraeus. He must think that we have violated the convention. I don't care how big you type. You are more than likely still wrong.

That's where we differ. The military needs to STFU about policy matters and leave it to the politicians and pundits.

Hey he said it not me. Why should I have to fact check him. I just think that you are like the rest of the right all up inside yourself that we got caught and you want to justify it. If it were turned around you would be standing on a soap box screaming that they tortured our people.

I seem to think when you are wrong you are wrong. If the troops stopped following wrong orders there would not be a problem.

I too would like to hear Petraus explanation of Ethreal's question. I have great respect for his wisdom he showed with Iraq, and would appreciate a detailed explanation from a high ranking military command person such as himself. But Ethreal is posing a valid question, and nobody is answering it, instead, just defaulting to the opinion of someone else.

I've read the articles of the Geneva Conventions that apply to the situation. They don't apply to the kind of combatant we currently face. If our US citizens were attacking Iranian interests, in the same manner that the Taliban and other insurgents/combatants do, then they would not deserve protections under the Geneva Conventions either. I hope that answers your question. Now if someone would answer Ethereal's...........

You mean many innocent people who were scooped up and wisked away and tortured and raped in order to gain false intelligence supports Cheney's dream of a Saddam/9-11 connection? Which has never been proven.

Bush and Cheney screw up by letting their guard down and being totally, most likely willingly, asleep when we were attacked on 9-11 and others, many innocent, get tortured for it.

Crap that is sick and crazy.

Why should I have to fact check him.

Sorry, I wasn't aware that you sheepishly differ to authority figures in matters of such import.

got caught and you want to justify it. If it were turned around you would be standing on a soap box screaming that they tortured our people.

I’m not justifying anything. I just asked a question. Why can’t you answer it?

You are the third person who has failed to answer a simple question. I wonder how many times I will ask the question before I get an answer...

And who decides these people don't apply to the geneva convention?

Because there are people of intelligence that say they should apply and there are people of intelligence that say the shouldn't apply.

Let the lawyers fight it out, which is exactly what might happen.

And who decides these people don't apply to the geneva convention?

There is no who. The question is "what" decides. Right now the Geneva Conventions don't cover this situation, as far as I can see from having read the pertinent Articles.

In one of the threads here recently, I stated that there needed to be a set of laws made to be applicable for this kind of situation. As it stands, none currently do. Personally, I think an amendment to the Geneva Conventions, makes the most sense. But I haven't seen anybody of note, push for such an amendment.

I don't know that we didn't violate the Geneva Convention. We have the CENTCOM ****ing commander saying we violated the Geneva Convention, John McCain said we violated the Geneva Convention, we have federal judges saying we violated the Geneva Convention, the Supreme Court said we violated the Geneva Convention, and we have dozens of governments around the world saying we violated the Geneva Convention.

I'm going to go ahead and take Petraeus' word that we violated the Geneva Convention. I'll let you speculate as to what he is specifically talking about.
