Although this particular story refers solely to happenings within the UK political system, it is imo more widespread.
Without a shadow of doubt almost every Politician becomes a Politician with the direct idea of first of all enriching themselves at the Taxpayers expense.
Only after they have grabbed all the goodies from the public trough do they then start thinking next of those that placed them in whatever position they are elected.
Only when we the Taxpayer have as our elected representatives folk who see that they were elected to serve their communities first will we have what the Founders of our nations desired.
The US is as are the majority of the so called Western Democracies bankrupt.
Yes we need to come out of Bankruptcy, then we need to come out of this depression (not a recession), during this time we need to set a new slew of Regulations that work and cannot be avoided/evaded by Lawyers.
Only when we have honest Government can we as Democracies have the right to honestly announce to the world that we are Democratic nations.
Until that time all we have are thieves enriching themselves at the expense of Democracy.
Communism or it's more acceptable name Socialism is not an answer.
For at the end of the argument, you still have this question.
Who creates the wealth that Government spends?

I think a few simple things would help with this:

All contributions go into a general fund to be divided between all candidates equally.

Remove all special interest groups.

Require all high public officials to show all income sources.

Limit all public offical to 2 terms.

All public officals are voted on (no appointing).

While these wouldnt solve everything I think they would greatly help.

Regretably, as can be seen from the paucity of response, very few people are even remotely concerned.
