Hardin, Montana Requests Guantanamo Detainees

Hardin Montana is the home of a 464 bed maximum security federal prison....which is empty and unused. The Mayor of Hardin has offered to hold detainees from Gitmo. Why would this be a bad idea?

It is a long way from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. But if people here get their way, up to 100 detainees now held in Guantanamo will soon be living in a brand new prison on the edge of town.
It is a windowless, low-slung tan concrete hulk surrounded by a double row of high mesh fence topped with gleaming coils of razor wire.
Earlier this month, Hardin's town council voted unanimously to offer the US government a deal: Send Hardin the detainees that most foreign countries and other cities the US are afraid to take.
"We have some very hardened criminals in our own country that have committed some heinous crimes, and they are in communities all across this country," Smith argues.is an unusually desperate town.
"We're the poorest county in the state and one of the poorest counties in the nation," Smith says.
He estimates at least 100 new jobs would come from filling the prison, a real boost to this small, beleaguered community.

These are the type of things are elected officials in Washington should be pushing for. You close Gitmo, a prison that apparently was a waste of money, will be utilized and in the time of recession, people can be put to work and money used to help our own citizens. They should move quickly with this idea I think.

FOLKS, PLease...gather round. :2wave: Gitmo is a US military base. The "prison", at Gitmo, is a prison. The fools amongst us, wish to close the PRISON, at Gitmo. The base itself , thank God , is not being closed, as hoped for, by another more foolish crowd amongst us.

At Hardin there are no sharks, or baracuda, nor is there all of those thousands of square miles of water separateing the prison from US soil.

Let the bastards sunbathe as it makes them happy, and adds to their contentment as political prisoners...:rofl

No one is pushing for closing the base. Only the military prison that is a black-eye to America throughout the world. A country based on fair, unbiased justice should not be holding captives indefinitely. Give the detanees a trial, if guilty lock them up, if they are not guilty then send them home.

What does it matter how much water separates the prison from the US. Are you expecting the detainees to escape? The prisons on US soil are good enough to hold Charles Manson, Eric Rudolph, the UniBomber, and other terrorists who are much more dangerous than the poor shmucks in Gitmo.

Do you fear the escape of serial killers from U.S. prisons? What about other Al-Qaeda who are alreay imprisoned on U.S. soil? The only argument for keeping the Gitmo prison is so that the former administration does not look like idiots and tyrants.

Remember I mentioned somewhere around here that I have an odd and interesting friend who's led a very unusual life, that owns a town in Montana...? The weirdest **** happens to and around this guy.

So yeah, if this thing goes through, some of his closest neighbors are gonna be Gitmo guys.

I couldn't make up a nuttier life story if I tried. :no:
 
I know that the Montana Senate and Congressmen are strongly opposed to this and are trying to block it because they are worried that "Montana's reputation will suffer." I wasn't aware that we even had a reputation to begin with. :lol:

The only problem I have with it is the legal implications regarding holding these people on sovereign U.S. territory which will grant them full Constitutional protections which IMHO they are in no way entitled to.

I just finished reading John Grishoms work of Non-fiction. Based on your coments and the vivid descriptions on LIFE(?) in American prisons (from the book), I`m thinking they just might get more justice here. You very well may be correct sir, :2wave: ...provided we are talking LIFE.

Why should we give non-U.S. citizens engaged in overt acts of war against the U.S. civilian as opposed to military trials? The real reason why you people want Gitmo closed and the detainees brought to the U.S. is so you can provide them with full Constitutional protections of which have never been provided to POW's let alone unlawful combatants in the entire history of this planet.

Oh and FYI if they are found not guilty they can't be sent home because their countries of origins will not take them, meaning that we will be forced to grant them U.S. citizenship which again is what the left is really after here.

Of course, they're trying to save their town and don't mind not being hypocritical about how they do it (no NIMBYs there!). They've got a big, brand new, completely empty prison, high unemployment, and a terrible economic outlook. Seems like killing two or three birds with one stone, to me.

I imagine there will be a lot of outrage and complaints about this, especially in the richer and more pretentious areas of Montana

If they are brought to the U.S. they will all be set free because all evidence against them will be deemed inadmissible because not only did they undergo coercive interrogations but they were denied Miranda rights. This is what Obama and the left are really after because once they set foot on sovereign U.S. territory they will be afforded full Constitutional protections. But it doesn't stop there either because since these peoples countries of origins won't take them we will have no choice but to set them free within the United States and either grant them citizenship or alien resident status so that they can get on about their business of killing Americans.

14th Amendment - Section 1 :

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Considering Gbay is under our jurisdiction then it would seem to me like they'd already be subject to our laws and protections. Unless you want to argue that the federal government can deny any person under it's jurisdiction the protection of the law.

I am not advocating giving them full Constitutional protection, but I am advocating a fair trial. And I am not advocating giving them full citizenship if not guilty. Question though, what would you do with the detainees who have done nothing wrong? Do you think it is ok to lock innocent people up forever because they were wrongly detained?

I think you are mistaken that they get constitutional protection once they set foot in America. They are military prisoners, and are accorded no rights beyond the judicial process.
