President Obama at Notre Dame protest

Re: 19 Obama protesters arrested at Notre Dame

Unless it's a university receiving public funding, it has every right to arbitrarily restrict what activities take place on campus. All universities in Canada are public, and even with those you often have you get the administration's permission to hold demonstrations.

Secondly, with the arrival of the President, security concerns must necessarily be high. Not to mention, it must be an honour for any school to receive the President, regardless if its liberal or not... and I could see why some wouldn't want his visit being tarnished by demonstrations that have nothing to do with the event.

They could have just as easily protested outside of the campus gates where freedom of speech and assembly would be protected. But no, they weren't satisfied with that. They had to be up close and personal at a university they weren't even attending.

Re: 19 Obama protesters arrested at Notre Dame

1) The only group I have a problem with (in terms of 'legal' protests) is the Westboro Baptist Church. They protest funerals of aids victims and Iraqi soldiers with signs stating that the deceased will 'burn in hell'. They are attacking families when they are most vulnerable, and I believe a protest sign that is specifically designed to cause another person server emotional injury(like being told your son is going to burn in hell), might be seen as crossing a 1st amendment line. I'm not a lawyer, but I understand there may be some cases pending against them.

2) Private Property is not a technicality here. It is everything. These people were not being arrested for protesting (like the far-right is trying to spin it) they were arrested for trespassing. They came on the property and were asked to leave. When they refused, they were arrested. I don't know which areas of the University are open to the public during what times, but a property owner can ask someone to leave without reason and the person must leave. Private Property is a major legal issue.

3) I forgot what the third thing was... Oh, yeah... Earshot. I think that's pretty loosely defined in the eyes of the law. If the President is in the oval office and you're standing at the Washington Monument, I think you're considered within earshot.

The President doesn't actually have to physically hear your protest, to hear of it. The safety and security of any President is of paramount importance. You want the ear of the President. Write a letter. Or graduate with honors from a school like Notre Dame. Get into a top law school. Then go to work in Washington. Maybe you will get to meet a sitting President someday. Congrats to the ND grads. I hope they have a great day!!

Watched as one protestor lied while she was arrested

On CNN this morning I watched as an older woman wearing a 'PRO LIFE t-shirt " was arrested and she started screaming that "abortions way 'sky-ocketed since this guy has been in office'". First of all I don't believe that we even have the statistics yet and Obama didn't do anything that could possibly have "sky-rocketed" the number of abortions since he bcame POTUS.

That lady has every ight to protest legally( not tresspass) but why do these s called "RIGHT TO LIFERS" need to lie ? Many of the so called right to lifers claim to be super religious and follow the "teachings of Christ". Didn't Christ expouse the 10 Comandments ? Isn't one of those Commandments "Though shalt not bear false witness against thy neighgbor" ?

So if that arrested lady who lied that POTUS Obama has caused as jump in abortions is such a person who thinks she is a Hyper- Christian does she understand that she has broken one the Ten Commandments.

You lady who has lied are a hypocrit !!!

How about that priest who screamed he was trying to save a baby when the police were trying to handcuff him. How many times will Sean Hannity be replaying that clip this week?

The Priests I know use their time to counsel young girls who come to them for spiritual guidance. Meanwhile, this probably senile old man is being used by Terry and Keyes to get a video clip.

Of course Hannity or FNC won't show the video where Randall Terry puts on an Obama mask, coats himself in blood and chases children (toddlers) in garbage bags down Notre Dame avenue.

I am watching it right now. I don't like the way it's being covered. It's like the news is waiting (almost hoping) something happens.

Hippies in D.C.? The Vietnam War went on for years and years.

And yet it finished with us leaving Vietnam because by and large public support for the war was in the gutter. You've said it yourself and so have people who were in Vietnam we didn't 'lose' the war because we lost fights. We lost the war because the public at home didn't support it.

And I suppose the protestors of Iraq are to be commended for bringing Iraq to its close?

Iraq did not come to a close earlier because there was a Republican supporter of the war in power for 8 years and yet we have now a Democrat who opposes it and is taking the steps to bring it to a close.

Protestors in America haven't had a successful history since the days when unions were in this nation's best interests. Ever since they have merely been a pain in the ass as policy and decision makers did their jobs.

This is simply untrue and you know it. Women's rights, gay rights, civil rights. The list goes on.

You are correct the great Saun Vanity will roll that video of the arrested priest and willplay it over and over. Maybe I was hearing things but wasn't that priest singing Ave Maria while he was being taken away ?

Eventually, all wars end. People protested Vietnam for years. People protested Iraq for years. Protestors frequently believe that they matter more than they do and when the wars reach their ends, they all want to believe that they "did it."

Since the days of tossing Tea over a wooden ship, which led to a Revolution, and later to the days when workers united to halt companies from earning, which led to unions, the protestor has evolved into a matterless voice. They are mere picket sign walkers who choose to voice up between their favorite television shows or when an Olympic Event occurs in China (Because oppression only happens during this time you see.)

And protestors mattered how? In the end it was Bush that started drawing the curtians on an Iraq that was largely already at its end. Early 2008, saw a Marine Commandant already reporting that it was time to start senidng the Marines to Afghanistan because they no longer had a mission in Iraq. Obama started nothing. He inherited steps already in the works.

This is simply untrue and you know it. Women's rights, gay rights, civil rights. The list goes on.

Social change is one thing. International dealings is another. No matter what, it will always come down to what needs to be done no matter who carries a picket sign. Women's rights was before the Unions. And Civil Rights was a natural step. When it comes to wars abroad, policy and mission will always trump a protestor.
