China moves to curb virus spread

China quarantines air passengers and suspends flights to and from Mexico, after a Hong Kong man is confirmed with swine flu

Police are guarding the Hong Kong hotel where the man stayed

China says it will quarantine all those who travelled on a flight from Mexico with a man suffering from swine flu, in a bid to curb the spread of the virus.

The 25-year-old man flew to Hong Kong via Shanghai on Thursday, and was admitted to hospital.

Beijing said it would put his fellow passengers under week-long observation. It also suspended flights from Mexico.

It seems to be spreading rather quickly.

4 More Probable Swine Flu Cases In King, Snohomish Co.

Posted: 7:07 am PDT May 1, 2009Updated: 6:51 pm PDT May 1, 2009
SEATTLE -- One more probable case of swine flu has been identified in King County and three more in Snohomish County, bringing the total of probable cases to 16 in Washington state.

In an afternoon press conference, director of King County's Public Health office Dr. David Fleming said the latest probable case is a 9-year-old Des Moines girl. Midway Elementary will be closed next week in connection to this latest case.

Fleming also said over 100 specimens are currently in a state lab waiting H1N1/swine flu testing.

Probable cases of N1H1 and their locations:

King County:
# (9 probable and 2 suspected) Seattle boy from Madrona K-8 School and his two siblings

# 37-year-old pediatrician from Seattle who treated 22 patients at a Mill Creek clinic and possibly her two children

# 27-year-old Seattle man

# Two children ages 8-12

# Woman in her 20s

# 9-year-old Des Moines girl

Fleming says there are suspected because those people were in direct contact with someone with the flu's symptoms.

Snohomish County:
# 3-year-old boy who recently traveled from Mexico

# 34-year-old woman

# 29-year-old woman from Everett

# 29-year-old woman from Edmonds

# 35-year-old man of Mountlake Terrace

Spokane County:
# A man in his 40s who recently traveled to California, the Spokesman-Review reported.

More than 400 schools closed, 161 US flu cases

The government issued new guidance for schools with confirmed cases, saying they should close for at least 14 days because children can be contagious for seven to 10 days from when they get sick. That means parents can expect to have children at home for longer than previously thought.

The Education Department said that more than 400 schools had closed, affecting about 245,000 children in 18 states. That was about 100 more schools reported closed than reported on Thursday.

Major U.S. airlines, meanwhile, announced plans to curtail flights into flu-ravaged Mexico.

It may be spreading, but outside of Mexico it is proving milder than most strains of flu, with a mortality rate on par with the strains seen in most flu seasons.

The economic impacts of all the preventative measures being taken are likely to be more significant than the virus itself.

Maybe its the lull before the storm...

Maybe its the lull before the storm...
Unlikely.

Virus propagation models tend to be ones of attenuation. As a virus moves through a population it becomes less virulent and less deadly.

The one aspect that does lead to a "calm before the storm" scenario is the lateness of the Mexico outbreak in the flu season for the Northern Hemisphere. This strain could return with greater virulence next winter, but, absent that, this influenza strain is proving thus far to be contagious but mild.

What? No calls to shut our borders with China?

Rather surprising, too. Would be the perfect cover for shutting down Chinese imports.

I can't wait till they decide to build that wall between us and China too.

You might notice China put in air travel to/from Mexico restrictions in place.
While in the USA we have watched our government debating how people would feel if they where not allowed to cross the border while excusing the Vice President for talking.

Now on a simple face value look at the two.
China acted competently the USA acted incompetently.
In fact pretty much every nation(excluding perhaps Egypt) acted in a manner early off that makes the US reaction look childish as well as flippant.

Then we do not have a competent President. His appointees are generally made up of people who are not even credible in their jobs. You can't expect much from jokes like that...other then the word definition spin games that we witnessed.

If anyone is upset by this type of dismissal of your mortal life...welcome to being a US soldier...they've been **** on by Obama and his supporters for almost adecade.

How has the US acted incompetently?

My Way News - Swine flu may be less potent than first feared

While the early news out of Mexico was disturbing to say the very least, the virus is not propagating at a rate that justifies use of the term pandemic. The severity and the number of cases just isn't there.

No travel restrictions whatsoever until just recently.
No border restrictions whatsoever until recently..even though we border the outbreak source.
No quarantines..afaik still no quarantines. "Go home kids.. We'll tell you if you will infect anyone in a day or two."

Pretty much every other nation
Instituted Travel Restrictions.
As for border..I dunno what Guatemala or Belize have done...probably more then the US.
Quarantined infected and often suspected cases.

Even the Mexican government shut down Mexico City for all intents.

Its cute to say NOW that's all fine because it didn't(or hasn't yet) go bad. If it had gone bad a few days back...USA would have gotten hit very hard and in part do to the inept initial reactions.
More concern was shown for what to name the crud then anything else.

I said numerous times that I assumed it would pass over and fade away. Other then that I posted the news and gave my opinions on the lacksluster display of the current US government in initial weeks response.

But now I'm an alarmist..

China instituted travel restriction after the man in Hong Kong was found to be infected..its in one of the links around. I may have overblown other nations but the overall point in reactions in comparison to the USA was notable and stark.

US flu tally jumps to 245 as labs catch up

NEW YORK — The tally of confirmed swine flu cases in the United States jumped Sunday to 245 in 35 states, but officials said that's largely from catching up on a backlog of lab tests rather than a sudden spurt in new infections.

The new count reflects streamlining in federal procedures and the results of tests by states, which have only recently begun confirming cases, said Dr. Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Because states are now contributing their results, and because there are many cases to analyze, "I expect the numbers to jump quite a bit in the next couple days," she told reporters Sunday.

Beyond eating into the backlog, the new number also reflects that "we do think this virus is fairly widespread," she said.

"Virtually all of the United States probably has this virus circulating now. That doesn't mean that everybody's infected, but within the communities, the virus has arrived."

Early Sunday, the CDC updated its number to 226 cases in 30 states, up from 160 in 21 states. Later, five more states reported confirmed cases, and new illnesses elsewhere were added to the tally.

Mexico's health secretary said Sunday that his country's outbreak is "now in its declining phase," but Schuchat noted that the United States got off to a later start. "We believe we are just in the upswing here," she said.

Scientists are still gathering information on how severe the nation's 30 hospitalized cases are, she said. They are mostly older children and young adults, in contrast to ordinary flu, which tends to send the elderly and very young to the hospital, Schuchat said.

BTW
The WHO also made clear that it could* rebound on the populaces infected. IOW it could have a fall off then come back with a vengeance.
Considering (as the article above states) the disease is likely widespread in the USA. That could be Bad.
But their a bunch of reactionary alarmists too... I'm sure.

..besides you posted that China might have kept your butt in country do to it. Scaring kids? :2razz:

Unless China has a cure, I don't see how they will curb anything.
